T 0 dl ccfz om t may concer/n Be it known that we, CHARLES L. ARNOLD and CHRLns EDnLnN, citizens of the United States, and residents ofv Bardstown, in the county of Nelson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvenients in Saws, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to band saws especially adapted for use by butchers.
An important object of this invention is to provide a band saw having novel means whereby the saw may be tensioned as the occasion requires and whereby the saw may be loosened so that the same may be conveniently disconnected for cleaning or replacement.
A further object is to pro-vide a butchers saw having novel means whereby the several wheels which support the band saw may be simult-aneously operated so that slippage between the saw and the several wheels vis reduced to a minimum.
A further object is to provide a saw for use b-y butchers which is simple to operate, durable in use and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description. Y
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through the improved saw.
Figure 2 is a. plan view of the improved saw, parts being shown in section.
Figure 3 is a detail section through the saw guiding means.
In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention the numeral 5 generally designates a frame which is preferably cast in one piece and which, is provided at its ends with disk-shaped heads 6 and T upon which gear casings 8 and 9 are mounted. The gear case 8 is formed integral with the frame while the gear case 9 is mounted for sliding movement on the disk-shaped head 7. As illustrated in Figure 2 the diskshaped head 7 is provided with guide flanges i0 which overhang the laterally projecting arms 11 extended from the gear case 9. It will be seen that the laterally projecting arms 11 have a sliding connection with the overhanging flanges 10 so that the gear case Serial No. 527,950.
9 may be moved longitudinally on said head. .lhe gear case 9 is provided with a forwardly extending portion 14 having laterally projecting arms 15 overhung by guide -anges 16 extended upwardly from the disk-shaped head 7. The guide flanges 16 cooperate with the guide fianges 10 in holding the gear case 9 against lateral movement or accidental rotation.
As illustrated in Figure 1 wheels 19 and 2O are arranged beneath the frame 5 and lare secured on the lower end of yshafts 120 by means of nuts 21, the said nuts 21 being provided with stems threaded into the lower portion of the shafts 120. Also each nut 21 is provided with a socket for the reception of thehub 22 of the adjacent wheel.
The upper end of each shaft 120 is rovided with a beveled gear 24 confined within the adjacent gear case and having engagement with a pinion 25. The pinions 25 of which there are twoare mounted upon a i shaft 26 composed of a pair of sections, one
of which is provided with a sleeve 28 having a square bore to receive the squared end 29 of the other section. It is thus seen that the two sections of the shaft 26 are slidably and non-rotatably connected so that the gear case 9 may be moved with respect to the gear case 8 without interfering with the driving connection between the shaft 26V vided with a plug 41 by means of which the cord may be electrically connected to a socket.
Each wheel 19 and 20 is provided with an annular flange 50 about which a band saw 51 is trained. As illustrated in Figure 2, one side of the. frame is open so that the saw may be engaged with the material to be cut without interference by the same or the various parts mounted upon the frame. The band saw 51 is passed through a pair of guides 53 carried by the heads 6 and 7. Pairs of upstanding apertured ears 54 are carried by the heads 6 and 7 above the depending guides 53 and pivotally support grooved guide Wheels 55, the grooves in the groovedWheels receiving the upper edge portion of the band saw, whereby to effectively guide the saw. It is thus seen that the saw is eiectively guided when engaged With the material so that the possibility of the saw breaking is reduced to a minim n.
The saw or band may be tightened from time to time by means of the adjusting screw 160 extended through a tubular guide 161 and having a threaded terminal portion engaged by a thumb nut 162. A coiled spring 164 is confined Within the guide 161 and urges the thumb nut 162 outwardly so that the gear case 9 and consequently the Wheel :2O is urged to one end of the fra-me so that the band saiv 51 is at all times maintained taut. As illustrated in Figure 1 the tubular guide 161 is preferably formed integral With the head T and when the thumb nut 162 is tightened the tension on the gear case 9 and consequently the wheel 2O is substantially increased. rllhe head is slotted as indicated at 166 to slidably receive the adjacent shaft 120.
ln operation, the operator grips the handles and 61 and places one side of the band saw over the material to be cut and lowers the frame so that the saiv is moved into engagement with the material. The switch 63 at one end of the handle may be conveniently opera-ted for setting the motor in operation and consequently starting the band saw 51. lVhen it is desired to clean the saw, the tension on the band saw may be released and the saiv immediately disengaged from the Wheels 19 and 20. The band san' may be adjusted as the occasion requires by the simple adjustment of the thumb nut 16:2.
As illustrated in Figure 1 the heads 6 and 7 are provided with depending anges 6G which surround the Wheels 19 and 2O and thereby protect the same from engagement with the material being cut or adjacent articles.
Having thus described our invention what we claim is 1. A butchers sauv comprising a frame having a pair of spaced disk-shaped heads provided With depending guard flanges, Wheels arranged beneath said heads and surrounded by said flanges, shafts connected to said Wheels and having gears, gear cases receiving said gears, .one of said gear cases being rigidly connected to one of the heads and the other gear case being slidably associated With the other head, an extensible shaft having pinions engaged with said gears, and a motor connected to said last named shaft.
2. A butchers saw comprising a frame having a pair of spaced disk-shaped heads provided with depending guard flanges, wheels arranged beneath said heads and surrounded by said flanges, shafts connected to said Wheels and having gears, gear cases receiving said gears, one of said gear cases being rigidly connected to one of the heads and the other gear case being slidably associated with the other head, an extensible shaft having pinions engaged With said gears, and a motor connected to said last named shaft, a tubular guide mounted on one of said heads, an adjusting screw extended through said tubular guide and having connection with said slid-ably supported gear case, and a thumb nut tireaded on said adjusting screw.
A butchers saw comprising a frame having a pair of spaced disk-shaped heads provided with depending guard flanges, Wheels arranged beneath said heads and surrounded by said iianges, shafts connected to said Wheels and having gears, gear cases receiving said gears, one of said gear cases being rigidly connected to one of the heads and the other gear case being slida-bly as sociated with the other head, an extensible shaft having pinions engaged With said gears, a motor connected to said last named shaft, a tubular guide mounted on one of said heads, an adjusting screw extended through said tubular guide and having connection with said slidably supported gear case, a thumb nut threaded on said adjusting screw, and a coiled spring confined between one end of said tubular guide and said thumb nut.
A portable san7 comprising a frame having a pair of heads and a connecting portieri, wheels arranged beneath said heads, shafts connected to said wheels and having gears, gear cases mounted on said heads and housing said gears, one of said cases being slidably mounted on the associated head, an extensible shaft rotatably connected to said cases and having pinions in mesh with said first named gears, a motor mounted on the connecting portion of said frame and having connection with said extensible shaft, and means whereby said slidably mounted casing may be moved l ngitudinally of the frame.
