UNITED STATES JOHN BABIARZ, OF NEW SALEM, PENNSYLVANIA.
CASHIER PROTECTOR.
Application filed June 12, 1922.
To all whom 2'21 may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BABIARZ, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New Salem, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cashier Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in protective devices for bank tellers, cashiers and others handling a large quantity of money and the principal object of the invention is to provide a device designed to protect the teller from injury by the dropping of armored curtain guards at the windows and doors including the cage and also to trap the assailant and expel a gas, such as tear gas, or other noxious substance, which will render him helpless.
These and other analogous objects are attained by the novel design, construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the interior of a tellers cage showing an embodiment of the device mounted for use, the wall of the building being indicated at the rear.
Figure 2 is a face view of the front wall of the cage, showing the' screen lowered.
Figure 3 is a fra mentary detail View, partly in section, of t e screen and gas containing reservoir.
Figure 4 is a wiring diagram showing the method of wiring the device.
Figure 5 is a similar diagram showing the wiring of the cashiers cage and station at a point remote therefrom.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates the outer wall of a building having the usual door opening which is ordinarily provided with doors 11. The tellers cage is partitioned 01f by the customary partition 12 and is provided with the usual shelves 13 extending below the window opening 14 in which the customary grating 15 is secured.
Secured across the upper end of the door opening in the wall 10 is a housing 16 in which is mounted a steel curtain or screen 17 normally rolled on a suitable spool, its movements being controlled by a gear 18. Channel guides 19 are arranged vertically at the opposite sides of the door opening Serial No. 567,854.
and are adapted to receive the side edges of the curtain 17 when the same is in lowered position, and duplicate devices are provided to cover all of the other doors and windows of the building.
Similar channel guides 20 are arranged at opposite sides of the window openings 14; in the tellers cage 12 and extending horizontally above the window openings are housings 21 which normally contain curtains or screens 22, preferably formed of steel or other metal to act as armor plates. These curtains are wound upon spools connected to the shaft 23 extending longitudinally of the housings 21 and the movements of this shaft are controlled through the gear train 24 by a suitable motor 25.
As illustrated in Figure 1, the shaft 23 is provided with a bevel gear 26 meshing with a mating gear on one end of the shaft 27, the opposite end of which is provided with a bevel pinion 28 meshing with the mating pinion 18 so that, when the motor is set in operation, all of the curtains 17 and 22 will be simultaneously lowered.
Secured within the cage 12 is a reservoir 29 having at its upper end an outlet opening to which is connected a nozzle 30 opening outwardly through the wall of the cage. A. piston 31 is slidably mounted within the reservoir 29, and secured to said piston to extend through a packing gland 32 in the bottom wall of the reservoir, is a tubular plunger 33, its lower end being provided with a flange 34 for engagement with the upper end of a coiled compression spring 35, the lower end of said spring abutting a bracket 36 secured to the wall.
It will thus be seen that the plunger will be urged upwardly under the influence of the spring 35, causing the piston 31 to expel the contents of the reservoir 29. In order to hold the spring compressed and the plunger inactive, a latch member 37 is provided, one end being disposed beneath the lower end of one of the panel members 20 so that when the screen is lowered, the latch will be moved to open position.
Extending through the tubular plunger 33 is a valve plunger 38, its lower end secured to a bracket 39, which extends angularly, as shown in Figure 3, and has its end disposed beneath the lower end of the channel 20, so that when the curtain drops, the valve 40 will be unseated and allow the contents of the reservoir to be forced outwardly through the nozzle 30.
In order to control the movements of the motor, there is provided a suitable power source 41, leading from one terminal of which is wire 4L2 connected by means of a branch wire 43 to push buttons or other contact making devices 4:4. Obviously when the push buttons 44: are pressed and the contact completed, the motor 25 will be set in operation and the screens 17 and 22 lowered. As the screen 22 reaches the lowermost position it engages a contact member 45 mounted on the shelf 13 directly beneath the window, thus completing the electric circuit from the power source 41 through the visual and audible signals 46 and 47, which may be located at some distant point wherever desired.
Such construction is shown in Figure 5, a portion of which represents diagrammatically a station remote from the bank building, as that for police, fire, etc. and in which a plurality of like signal devices may be entered, each bearing the street and number, together with audible and visual signals, and
a key operated means for opening the circuit, closed by the persons in the bank.
lVhile certain preferred embodiments of this device have been shown and described, it will be understood that changes in the form, arrangements and details thereof may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the claim hereto appended.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A device of the class described comprising the combination with a cage having a window, of a protective screen associated therewith adapted to close the window, manually controlled means for moving said screen to closed position, a g as reservoir as sociated with said cage, a spring actuated piston operable in said reservoir adapted to expel the gas from said reservoir, and means for releasing said piston upon the comple tion of the closing movement of the screen.
In witness whereof I afiix my signature. 50
JOHN BABIARZ.
