SLIP-ON COVER FOR BOOKS AND THE LIKE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GUSTAV DEGENRING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Slip-On Covers for Books and the like, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in covers for books and the like and an ob ject thereof is the provision of a cover which may be slipped on over a book for example and which cover is sanitary, water-proof and 7 durable.

Preferably my improved cover is made of expansible material so as to enable the same to be applied to articles of different sizes.

Briefly my invention comprises a cover of the character indicated made of rubber,

bodiment of my invention the cover is so shaped as to hold itself in place on the article to be covered while in anotherembodiment of my invention my improved cover is provided with fasteners adapted to cooperate with each other so as to cause the cover to be held in place at all times.

By making my improved cover of rubber it will be obvious, of course, that the same may be kept clean and may be washed if desired and inasmuch as the cover is adapted to completely enclose the book or other article to be covered the same will be protected at all times.

In the accompanying drawings two em bodiments of my invention have been illustrated,-

Fig. 1 showing one form of the invention in perspective with part of the cover opened so as to clearly disclose the construction thereof;

Fig. 2 shows the cover of Fig. l in partially closed position;

Fig. 3 shows the cover of Fig. l in the position assumed by the same when the cover 15 employed to completely enclose an article; and

Fig. 4 is a modified form of my invention.

Referring to the drawings in detail and first of all to the embodiment of my invention illustrated in Figs. I to 3 inclusive, 1 designates a sheet of rubber, preferably cured rubber, provided at one side with flaps 2 and 3 adapted to be folded over each other as indicated in Fig. 1 to provide a pocket for the reception of one cover 4 of the book '5. These flaps may be cemented, glued or otherwise permanently secured to each other, this side of the cover being per- The other side, of the cover which is to take care of the cover 6 of the book is provided with end flaps 7 and 8 and a laterally extending side flap 9. The flaps 7 and 8 are adapted to be folded over the cover 6 1n the position shown in Fig. 1 while the flap 9 is then folded in so as to overlie the flaps 7 and 8 and to provide with the flaps and 8 a pocket which receives the book cover 6. Inasmuch as I desire to at some time enclose the entire book the flaps 7 8 and 9 are not permanently attached to each other as was the case with the flaps 2 and 3 but are provided with snap-fasteners 10 eooperating with each other so that the flap 9-may be detachably secured to the flaps 7 and 8.

Inasmuch as my improved cover is made of rubber as I have above pointed out I prefer to reinforce the under sides of the flaps 7 8 and 9 with fabric or some other material not easily torn so that the snap-fasteners 10 will not be torn out of the rubber. This reinforcing manent.

Fromthe description-thus far given it will be seen that when the flap 9 is folded over so as to overlie the flaps 7 and 8 the covers 4 and 6 of .the book will be enclosed. hen it is desired to enclose the whole book the flap 9 is moved to the position shown in Fig. 1 and the flaps 7 and 8 opened outwardly. The book with my improved cover in this position may then be closed and the flaps 7 and 8 folded over so as to overlie the outside of that portion of the-cover which is on the outer side of the book cover 4, and which part of the cover I will designate 12. The flap 7 has been shown folded over in the position just referred to in Fig. 2 while both flaps 7 and 8 are shown folded over in Fig. 3. These two flaps are provided with snap- fasteners 13 and 14 cooperating with the fasteners'15 and 16 on the face of my cover so that the flaps will be held in folded-over position. The flap 9 which ordinarily may be termed a back flap is then folded over to the position indicated in Fig. 3 so as to overlie the flaps 7 and 8 and is held in this position by the snap-fasteners 10 already referred to and which engage material is indicated at 11 .and of course may take nearly any form parent that the snap-fasteners 17 and 18 in the flaps 7 and 8. It will be seen that with the parts in this position the book is completely enclosed.

In this embodiment of my invention, therefore, I have provided a rubber cover adapted to be applied to a book or other article and which cover is so arranged that the book may be used in the ordinary way with the cover applied thereto or if desired the cover may be spread out and refolded so as to enclose the entire book and inasmuch as my improved cover is made of water-proof washable material it will be apthe book will be protected and that the cover may be kept clean at all times.

In the embodiment of my invention illustrated in Fig. 4 I provide-a sheet of rubber designated 19. This sheet of rubber is preferably cured and comprises a body portion 20 provided with end flaps 21 and side flaps 22. These flaps are folded over as indicated in full lines in the drawing so as to form, pockets to receive the covers of a book or similar article to which my improved cover is to be applied. The overlapping portions of the flaps 21 and 22 may be vulcanized together if desired or demented or otherwise attached to each other. That portion of the body of the cover which engages the back part of the book is )referably pro-v vided with a non-extensib e reinforcing member 23. By reason of the fact that the cover of Fig. at is composed of rubber it may be applied to articles of various sizes.

It will be seen that in this embodiment of my invention also I have provided a sanitary water-proof cover adapted to be applied to articles of various sizes.

I claim: 7

1. As an article of manufacture, a cover of extensible material provided with flaps folded in upon each other to form pockets for receiving the covers of a book, said flaps being adapted to be folded over upon each other and upon a portion of the body of the cover so as to substantially completely enclose the book.

for books and the like composed of waterproof extensible material and comprising a pocket in one side of the cover for receiving one cover of the book, flaps at the other side of the cover adapted when in one posi: tion to enclose the other coverof the book and when in another position to cooperate with that portion of the cover comprising the pocket whereby the book will be entirely enclosed.

3. As an article of manufacture, a cover comprised of water-proof extensible material, one portion of said cover being provided with a pocket forreceiving a book cover, end and side flaps formed out of the other portion of the cover and adapted to be folded over each other to form a pocket for receiving the other cover of a book, fasteners for securing the flaps in this position said flaps being so arranged as to be folded. over upon a portion of the body of the cover and upon each other to entirely enclose the book and means for holdingthese flaps in this position.

4:. As an article of manufacture, a slipon cover of extensible waterproof material rovided with a pocket in one side thereof for receiving flaps at the other side of the SllpO11 cover adapted to be folded over upon each other to for'm'another pocket for the other cover of the book, snap-fasteners for holding the flaps in this position, reinforcing means for securing the fasteners to the cover, said flaps being so disposed relatively to each other as to enable the same to be folded over about the book to entirely enclose the same and snap-fasteners for holding the flaps in this position.
