BADGE.
Application filed April 1.4-,
To all whom t may concern.'
Be. it known thatl I, EDWARD L. lnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Badges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved construction of badge, emblem and the like; and the object of this invention is to provide a badge of this type comprising a back plate of triangular shape and a front plate formed in halves which combined, provide a plate of similar size and shape to that of the back plate, one edge of each of these halves being hinged to opposite edges of the back plate, to be swung outwardly to expose the symn bols on their inner faces also to expose theA symbols on the inner faces of the back plate and to also be swung back and loclied together `over the face of the back plate to cover these inner symbols and expose the single symbol formed on their combined front faces.
By my improved construction of badge the halves of the front plate may be swung to partly closed position, each to stand at an acute angle to the back plate to provide a supporting base on which the device may stand' in an upright position similar to a pyramidal tent. rlhe halves being` also provided with means whereby both are automatically locked to the back plate upon being swung to closed position.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a front view illustrating my improved badge and showing one half of the front plate in folded or closed position.
Figure 2 is a' view illustrating the halves and each having one of its edges hinged to opposite edges of the back plate to swing to extended position to expose the symbol on their inner faces.
Figure 3 shows the device with the halves of the front plate each swung to an acute angle to the back plate providing a broad supporting base on which the device may stand in an upright position.
Figure 4 is an edge view illustrating one of the halves as cloSed and the other half as of this triangular 1923. Serial No. 632,051.
partly closed and provided withv a detent ready to lock both halves to the back plate.
Figure is an edge view showing the members of 'the badge` as locked in folded position.
Figure G is a view looking at the lower edge of the badge and showing thedetent as extending from over the bottom edge ofthe back plate to lock the whole together.
In the construction of certain classes of emblems or badges indicating different orders, lodges and societies, it is found of advantage to provide a badge of-this-character which may be constructed of two or more plates hinged together whereby when the parts are folded together, the outline of the badge presents a certain significance and when unfolded presents a badge of another significance; also by such a construction a plurality of symbols may be carried on the different faces of the badge to be exposed when the members of the badge are extended or swung to open position.
It is also found of advantage to provide such a badgeJ wherebyy the hinge members may be swung topartly openposition adapted to provide a broad or Aextended* base on which the device may stand infupright position to rest upon a table or other suitable base to facilitate displaying ofthe same; and the following` is a detailed description of one construction of such a badge by which the desired results may be obtained:-
With reference to the drawings, 10 designates the back plate of my improved badge which is preferably in triangular shape to carry a certain significance, the same being preferably provided with a ring or eye 11 at its upper end by which this badge may be suitably supported when made in smaller sizes and suspended from a chain or the like.
The opposite side edges of the back plate badge are provided with hinges 12 to each of which is hinged the half plates 13 and 14 to be swung to closed position over the front face of the back plate and which halves, together, provide a plate of the same size and shape as that of the back plate and which may be swung to open position to exhibit symbols shown on their inner faces.
In order to lock these halves when in closed position, I have provided a detent snap finger 15 on the edge of one of the halves, which extends im@ POSQn to be snapped over the free edge of the other half when in closed position, as illustrated in Figure 6, also to be snapped over the edgel 16 of the back plate whereby the closing of wing 13 locks wing 14 to the back plate. I have also provided on wing 13 a plate 1T which may be in the form of another symbol, if desired, adapted to overlap the edge of the wing lll when both are in closed position whereby when the inner wing is locked in closed position this overlapping edge 17 serves to lock wing 14 in its closed position when the detent 15 on wing 13 is snapped over the edge of the back plate, as shown in Figure 6.
In some instances particularly in the display of this badge or emblem, it is found of advantage to be able to stand them in upright position on its base, as best illustrated in Figure 3, which may be accomplished by my improved construction of badge by merely opening the halves of the front plate part way or stand them at an acute angle to the plane of the back plate thereby forming a badge in a pyramidal shape which will lsoupport itself firmly upon its own extended ase. f
My improved form of badge is extremely practical in construction and attractive in its appearance.
The foregoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
I claim:
l. A badge comprising a back plate of triangular shape with a side as a base, a front plate formed in halves which combined are of the shape and size of the back plate and which halves are hinged to opposite side edges of the back plate to be swung outwardly therefrom to expose the symbols on their inner faces also that on the inner face of the back plate and adapted to be swung to partly closed position to cooperate with the back plate to form a base to support the device in upright position.
2. A badge comprising a back plate of triangular shape, a front plate formed in halves which combined form a plate of similar shape and size as that of the back plate which halves are hinged to opposite edges of the bach plate to be swung outwardly to expose the symbols on their inner faces and also that on the inner face of the back plate, an engaging member, and a detent on one of said halves by which both are automatically locked upon being swung to closed position.
3. A badge comprising a back plate of triangular shape, a front plate formed in halves which combined form a plate of a size and shape similar to that of the back plate, said halves being hinged to opposite edges of the back plate to be swung outwardly to expose the symbols on their inner faces and also that on the inner face of the back plate, said halves being` adapted to be swung to partly closed position, each to stand at an acute angle to the back plate providing a broad supporting base on which the device may stand in an upright position, and a detent on one of said halves by means of which both are automatically locked to the back plate upon being swung to closed position.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
