GAS-LOG HEATER.
Application filed March 30, 1923. Serial No. 628,847.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, EUGENE S. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Oak Station, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gas-Log Heaters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
. My invention relates to a gas-log heater.
These heaters, as generally constructed, consist of an artificial log made of terracotta or other suitable material in imitation of a sawed section of a log, said log being recessed in the front with a burner-plate secured in position to support a series of vertical radiants, and a gas burner supported below said plate with jets in line with openings in said plate and with the tubular radiants, so that when the gas is ignited the radiants become incandescent and so radiate the heat into the room or apartment.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a gas-log heater of this character in which there is a removable fire-back held L securely in place against displacement, and
yet capable of expansion and contraction, as said fire-back is raised to an intense heat. A further object of my invention is to provide for the circulation of air back of the fire-back to relieve the strain on the fireback.
A further object of my invention is to provide means for holding the burner-plate securely in position so as to prevent its working loose or becoming entirely detached from the log when in use or in handling or shipment.
A further object of my invention is to provide a gas-log with the fire-back and supporting plate at a single unit, the fire-back acting to hold the means for fastening the burner-plate in place, and said plate in turn acting to hold the fire-back in position.
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is a front View of my improved gas-log heater showing the lower supplemental branch removed to expose the burner; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3, Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the fire-back, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the spacing shim.
In the drawings, the numeral 2 designates an artificial log made of terra-cotta or any other suitable material, said log being made to imitate the ordinary chopped section. The log is recessed to form the recess 3, and
at the rear of said recess are the grooves 4: formed in the body of the log and adapted to receive from below the fire-back 5which is formed of some highly refractory materia The rear wall of the recess 3 has thevertical air-channels 6 connected by the horizontal channel 7. A spacing-shim 8 is inserted in the horizontal channel 7, said shim bearing against the rear face of the fire-back 5, and acting tohold said fire-back in contact with the shoulders 9 so as to hold said fireback securely in position, and at the same time an air-space 10 is formed back of said fire-back for the circulation of the air, thereby relieving said fire-back of the strain caused by the intense heat to which it is subjecte The spacing shim 8 is inserted in the horizontal channel 7, and the fire-back is then slipped into the grooves 4: from below, and

Before inserting the fire-back 5, however. the fastening device or bolts 11 are adjusted in position, said bolts having the inwardly extending portions 12 at their inner endswhich are adapted to enter pockets 13 formed for their reception in the walls of the log. These bolts, having been inserted in this manner, the fire-back is then shoved into position in the grooves t, and said fire-back, bearing against the bolts, holds them in position, the outer ends of said bolts extending below the bottom of the log which is recessed as at 14 to receive the ends of the bolts, whereupon the nuts 17 are screwedon the bolts, and in this manner the plate is held securely in position, a complete unit being formed consisting of the log, the fire-back and the burner-plate, so that when thus put together all the parts are securely connected and ready for shipment.
The burner-plate 15 has the burner openings 18 formed therein. The tubular radiants 19 are supported on the plate 15 over the burner openings 18, and the log is grooved as at 20 to receive the upper ends of the radiants to support them against falling outwardly, the lower ends of the said radiants being held in place by the longitudt nally extending flange 21 formed on the plate 15.
The burner 22 may be of any suitable construction, that shown being of a common type and connected to the plate 16 by the fastening devices 23.
A suitable stand 24 is provided for the gas-log heater and connected to said stand and projecting out therefrom are the fingers 25 which form supports for the supplemental branch 26 provided with openings 27 to receive said fingers. This supplemental branch conceals the burner and adds to the attractiveness of the heater as a Whole.
What I claim is:
1. A gas-log heater comprising an artificial log-section recessed at the front, grooves formed in said section, a removable fire-back fitting in said grooves, and a burner-plate connected to said log below said fire-back.
2. A gas-log heater comprising an artificial log-section recessed at the front, grooves formed in said log-section, a removable fire-back engaging said grooves, a spacing-shim back of said fire-back, and a burner-plate connected to said log below said fire-back.
3. A gas-log heater comprising an artificial log-section recessed at the front, grooves formed in said log, a removable fire-back inserted in said grooves from below, an airspace formed in said log back of said fireback, and a burner-plate connected to said log below said fire-back.
4. A gas-log heater comprising an artificial log-section recessed at the front, grooves formed in said log-section, a removable fireback inserted in said grooves from below, vertical channels formed in the rear wall of saidrecess, a horizontal channel connecting said vertical channels, a spacing-shim in said horizontal channel engaging the rear wall ofisaidwfireback, and a burner plate connected to said log below said fire-back.
5. A as-log heater comprising an artificial section of a log recessed at the front, a removable fire-back, fastening means held in position by said fire back, and a burnerplate connected to said fastening means.
6. A gas-log heater comprising an artificial log-section recessed at the front, aremovable fire-back at the rear of said recessed portion, bolts having inwardly projecting portions fitting in pockets in said log, said bolts being held in position by said fire-back, and a burner-plate connected to said bolts.
7. A gas-log heater comprising an artificial log-section recessed at the front, grooves formed in said log, a fire-back inserted from below in said grooves, bolts in said grooves having projecting portions engaging pockets formed in said log and held in place by said fire-back, and a burner-plate connected to said bolts.
