UNI'IED STATES PATENT FFICE.
JAMES PATERSON, OF IIEYTONSTONE, ENGLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR CAPSULING BOTTLES.
Specification forming part cf Letters Patent N0. 14S,976 dated March 24, 187 4 application filed March 9,1874.
OASE A.
T0 all whom it mag; concern:
Be it known that l, JAMES PATERSON, of Leytonstone, in the county of Essex, England, bave .invented certain Improvements in Capsuling Bottles a-nd other Vessels, of which tl1e following is a specification:
llly invention relates to an improvement in tl1e mode of applying metallic capsules to bottles for which Letters Patent N0.121,407 were granted to William Betts, as my assignee, on the 28th day cf November, 1871 and the object of my invention is to fix the capsules n1ore cxpeditiously and effectually than heretofore, by opcra-ting the elastic diaphragm described in the said patent by simple mechanical appliances, instead cf by the pressure cf a surrounding fluid.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a fi0nt elevation of my improved capsuling apparatus With the cover-plate removed; Fig. 2, a sectiona-l elevation of tl1e same, and Fig. 3 a detacl1ed view of tl1e elasti c block or dia phrag'm.
The elastic block A is, in the present instance, cf a cruciform shape, and l1as a central aperture or chambe1, x, for the reception of the neck of tl1e bottle er other vcssel, and of the metallic ca-psule to be fixed to tl1e Same by pressure. The said block is fitted into radial grooves formcd for its reception 011 the projecting face of the standard B of the machine, and is hold therein by the face-plate C. A dog or slide, D, is adapted to each cf the radial grooves of the standard, and is caused to bear against the elastic block, so that, when all of tl1e dogs are forced inward simultane ously, tl1eir combined pressure will uniformly contract the central opening x cf the clastic block and cause tl1e latter to gripe and compress the capsule around the neok of the bottle.
Various mechanical devices, such as eccentrics, cranks, anal screws, may be used for operating tl1e sliding dogs; but I prefer to employ a ring, E, arranged 110 be turned upon the exterior cf tl1e circular portion of the standard by an arm or lever, F, and having internal camlike inclines a opposite cach of the sliding dogs. 011 turning the said ring in tl1e direction of the arrow, the whole of the dogs Will be forced inward simultaneously, and will compress the rubber block around the capsule, and, 011 returning tl1e ring to its original position, tl1e inherent elastieity of tl1e rubber will force the slides back against the ring, and the apparatus Will then be ready for a repetition ot' the operation.
I do not desire to confine myself to a cruciforma block, A, nor to the use cf four radial slides, as the said block mayhave a polygonal or a curved exterior, and any suitable number of slides 1nay be used, so shaped at tl1eir inner ends as to conform to the exterior cf the elastic block.
I clain1 as my inventionl. In a 1nachine for applying capsules t0 bottles and other vessels, the combination, substantially as described, of an elastic tubu- 1ar block or diapluagm Witl sliding dogs D, arranged radially around thc same, f01 tl1e purpose specified.
2. The combination, substantially as desoribed, of the elastic block 013 diaphragm A, the radially-sliding dogs D, and the cam-ring E.
In witncss whcreof I l1ave signed my nan1e to this spccification in tl1e preseuce 0f tw0 subscribing witnesses.
JAMES PATERSON.
