THEODORE E. KBUEGER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HANDLE non BOXES nun PARCELS.
Application filed September 29, 1921. Serial ltd 504,233,
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Tnnononn H. Knuncnn, ,a citizen of the United States, residin in the city, county, and State of New ork, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles for Boxes and Parcels, of which the following is a specification.
. This invention relates to devices which 0 may be attached to parcels and the like for v tied by twine, thus eliminating the necessity of using twine for such packages merely in order to make the ordinary type of carrying handle applicable thereto. The invention accordingly proposes a hanw dle composed of .pa er, cardboard or other sheet material provi ed with guinmed members whereby the'same may be applied to the parcels to be carried, the construction of the handle being such that. it will be capable $0 of withstanding large strains, in order that it may be employed with safety on parcels of comparatively heavy weight. It ro poses a handle which may be secured to 0th sides of a parcel so that the strain on w the gummed attaching members is minimized.
Another feature of the invention consists in prgviding ahandle which may be adjusted to narrow or wide parcels. Still an- W other purpose of the invention consists in providing a handle stamped out of sheet material by automatic machinery and thus manufactured very cheaply.
A good understandin' of the invention may be had from the fo lowing description of a specific form of embodiment thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which, v
Figure .1 is a plan view of one form of B9 device embodying the invention;
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the device operatively attached to a parcel;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view of Figure 2; l
Figured is a view similar to Figure 1, showing a modified form of embodiment of the invention; V Figure 5 is a section of Figure 4 on line Figures 6 and 7 are views similar to Figure 3, showing the handle of Figure 4 applied to a narrowvand a wide parcel, respectively. 7
Similar characters of reference designate similar parts in each of the several views.
The device illustrated in the drawing consists of a rectangular sheet 1 of gummed paper or other material, the inner portion of which is glued to a re-enforcing strip 2 of cardboard or other suitable material, thus providing gummedends 1 and 1 extending beyond the edges of the cardboard. The
inner portion is providedwith triangular notches fl and is scored through the middle as ind-icated'at 3, so that the same may be folded with the gummed extensions 1 and 1" facing each other, as indicated in Figures 2 and 3. Openings 5 and 5 are provided in the inner portion at equal distances from the fold 3, but the material of the sheet at one of the openings 5", is cut away at only three sides, so as to form a flap 6 extending from.
the edge8 adjacent to the fold. This flap is provided with scorings 7, one in edge 8 an the others parallel thereto and arranged I to permit the flap to be folded inwardly and extended into theopposite opening 5 when the sheet is folded, as illustrated in Figure 3.
In practical use the device is attached to the parcel which is to be carried by moistening of the gummed ends 1 and 1 the latter ends being preferably applied to the vertical walls of the parcel so thatthe strain of carrying will be substantially in the plane of the paper and there will be little or no tendency to shear. The flap 6 is then bent inwardly and extended through the open ing 5, this being accomplished by simply inserting the fingers of the hand through opening 5" in the manner shown in Figure 3; whereupon the device is ready for use. i It will be observed that owing to its scorings the flap assumes a substantially fiat or slightly convex under surface when in use, thus not only protecting the fingers from the upper edges of openings 5 and 5but shaping itself to the curve; of the fingers. The comfort and convenience with w ich A the parcel may be' carried is thus materially enhanced. l
A modified form of embodiment of the invention is illustrated in Figures 4, and
'5 6. This form differs from the one hereinbefore described primaril in that a flap, 6 and 6 is provided at eac side of the scoring 3, each flap being provided with scorings 7 and 7", respectively. The handle so formed is used on narrow parcels in the manner indicated in Fi re 6, the one flap 6 being folded so that its end'extends into the apex of the handle, and the other flap 6 belng extended through opening 5 so flatness, when opened out. Because of this feature, large quantities of the carrier handle may be packed in convenient bundles and thus placed in trade. cheapness, moreover, renders it economical to destroy the device after a single'usc and Its extraordinary makes it feasible for a department or other store toahav'e them applied to any suitable parcel for the convenience of. its customers, at a very small cost.
Although I have herein shown and dc scribed only two forms of embodiment of.
the invention, it will be readil understood that many changes and modi cations may be made therein without departing from the 9 the same has been attached to the parcel and spirit and scopeof the invention, it being my intention to claim' the same broadly in whatever form its principlesmay be embodied. \Vhat I claim is:
I 4 1. A parcel handle of the character defolded, I prefer to furnish the seal with the unmoistened so that it does not-stick.
handle in the form of a tab of gummed ma-,
terial having one .end 20 pasted to the handle, the other end 20 thereof bein left en the handle has been folded as indicated in Figure 6, thefree end of the tab is'mois- .tened and applied to the outer fla 6".
This flap-is thus secured, in place an the various parts constituting the grip memberof the handle are thus firmly united to each other. It will be understood that instead of the tab, other means may be provided}: for holding theflap in place. For examplef the flap may be interlocked with the bodyj yided'with hand openmgs, a grlp memberas by a tongue and slot connection. It will; be observed thatby securing. the flap' lto' the body :the stren h and rigidity of the handle are increase so that it may be em- 4 ployed on parcels of considerable weight.
Another advantage of this handle consists in its adaptabilityto packages of diiferent widths. When folded as in Figure 6, it is particularly adapted to narrow packages.
45 When the parcel is of such width, however,
that the flaps are of insuflicient lengthto be used as in Figure 6, the same may befolded,
as illustrated in Figure 7, so that the outer ends of both. flaps extend into the apex of 59. the handle.
It. may be here noted that when the handleis used in the manner illustrated in Figure 7, the tab 20 has no function. Its free end 20 may therefore be removed, or
it may be moistened andapplied to the handle, as-illust-rated. Packages which are too wide to have the gummedends of the handle applied to the vertical sides may be carried by securing the said ends of the upr surface of the parcel, but this .manner of fastening the handle is less desirable and ,.should be avoided when possible.
Oneof the cardinal features of either form of the device, other than its simplicity and cheapness of manufacture, resides, 111 its scribed, consisting ofisheetmaterial having a plurality of oppositely disposed hand openings therein, a grip member for coop'erating withsaid'opening, and means for se-' curing the handle to a package.
parcel handle of" the character described, consisting of sheet material provided with hand-openings, a grip member formed of .said sheet material for cooperating with said openings, and means for securing the handle to a parcel.
1-3; A parcel handle of the character de-' scribed, consisting bf sheet material proconsisting of a tongue projectin from one of said openings and adapted to e extended through the other of said openings, and means beyond the hand openings for securing the handle to a parcel.
4. Ina device of t e character described,
means, and a rip member for cooperating with said openings. I 4
6. In a. device'of the character described,
a member of sheet material folded in the a-sheet of material having gummed ends 1 for attachment to a parcel tovbe carried, a
sheet of re-enforcing material united to the middle portion of the said sheet, said reenforced part of the sheet being scored in the middle and provided with openings exscored across the middle and provided tending parallel to said scoring, and a flap formed of the material of one of said openings and extending from the edge thereof ad acent to said scoring, said flap eing provided with scorings parallel to said edge.
7. A device of the character described, comprising a plurality of side members of sheet material, means whereby said members may be secured to an article to be carried, said members being provided with hand openings above the securing means, and a grip member for cooperating with said openings, said grip member being formed of the material of the side members and having a substantially flat under ,surface.
8. A device of the character described, comprising a sheet of material scored through the middle and provided with grip openings at each side 0 said scoring, said sheet being provided with a flap at each of said openings, said flaps being scored parallel to said first-mentioned scoring whereby the same are adapted to be folded one over the other when said handle is applied to a parcel to be carried. 7
9. Incombination, a member of sheet material provided with gummed ends for attachment-to a parcel, said member be' wit hand openings at both sides of the middle, and a scored sheet of material for coo erating with said hand openings, said s eet being scored so as to adapt itself to the ham 10. In combination, a member of sheet material provided with mmed ends for attachment to a parcel to e carried, a sheet of re-enforcing material applied to the said member to re-enforce the intermediate portion thereof, said intermediate portion being scored throu h the middle and provided with flaps formed of the material of the said portion, said flaps being adapted to be folded to form a grip member, and means for retaining said flaps in said folded position. r
11. In combination, a member of sheet material provided with gummed ends for attachment to a parcel to e carried, a sheet of re-enforcing material applied to the said member to re-enforce the intermediate portion thereof, said intermediate portion being scored through the middle and rovided with flaps formed of the materia of the said portion, said flaps being adapted to be folded to form a grip member, and a tab of gummed material associated with said member and adapted to be moistened and applied to said flaps for retaining the same in their folded positions.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signatnre to this specification.
