To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, GEORGE Gr. Mrronnnt, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the town of Union; in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fence- Makers Tools, of which the following i a specification. I
This invention relates to a tool for use in the construction and repair of wire fences adapted to be utilized as a hammer for driving staples or nails, a staple or nail ex tractor, a wire stretcher, and a wire cutter.
The objects of the invention are to provide a device of the character described comprising a pair of similar members pivotally connected intermediate their ends each operate with the corresponding end of the other member to withdraw staples; nails and the like; said jaws beingformed with trans verse curved knife edges to penetrate the material-around a staple the head of which is flush with the surface of the material and out away said material adjacent the staple to enable the jaws to grip the staple for ex} traction thereof; to provide. jaws which v when closed' 'form a head with its opposite sides in substantially parallel planes and its front end rounded longitudinally of the edge thereof for its entire length and curved transversely of saidedge from one of said planes to the other,'the faces of said jaws being oppositely recessed to provide walls which are substantially straight transverse ly of the head and which curve from the extreme ends of the jaws substantially to the parallel sides of the head; to thus secure jaws with adjacent gripping portions which have roundedly pointed cutters of substantially the thickness of the jaws and with cutting edges which are continuous 1 from side to side ofthe tool and to obtain other results and advantages as'may be brought out by the following description.
- Referring to the accompanying drawings, in WhlCh like numerals of reference indicate the same'parts throughout the several views,
tween the knife edges 15,. and. it wil'l be'seen Fig. dais a fragmentary perspective view of one"ofthe jaws; and a. f
Fig. 5' is an end elevation of the jaw end of the tool. y t
In the embodiment of my invention shown on the drawings, the reference characters A designate opposed members duplicate in form pivotally connected intermediate their ends as at 1,-one end of each of which comprises a handle portion 2. vThe opposite ends of said members-A are formed with enlarged aws3 arranged at substantially right angles to the respective handle portions 2 and ter- -minating at their outer sides in hammer faces 4. The adjacent faces of the jaws?) are cut away diverg'in'glyi inward from the outer ends thereof to form transverse knife edges 5 .for the purpose of extracting a staple or hailfrom anobj'eot into. which it 1s ,driven. tA pocket 6 is thus, formed be:
that -.the,.,knife edges-Hare movable toward and from each. otherby oscillation of the handlefportions2. The knife edges5 are suitably hardened to. withstand contact with staples and nails, and are'formed at, their. inner; ends with projection ,7 which abut when the jaws are brought. together to mains-v tain the outer (ends of the knife edges in I spaced relation tofl preve'nt injury thereof by contact with veach other. 7 Theouter ends of the jaws3. are transversely curved and formed withlongitudinally extending continuous curved .cam bearing surfaces 8 which recede from the re spective knife edges'5, as shownin Figs. 2 and 4. vVVith jthis construction it will. be seen that with the knife edges 5-swung apart from each other they Will readily penetrate an object as indicated at C; in :which a staple B vor nail to be withdrawn is .POSi-w tioned, the knife edges being-forced into the object on opposite sides of the .staple .or head of the naill .To withdraw vthe staple or nail it is then merely necessary first to; force the handle portions 2 toward each other to. cause the .jaws- 3 to close upon the A staple or nail head." The knife edges, 5 cut away the material of. the object on both sides of the staple or nail and grip the staple or nail head between them,-as clearly shown in Fig; 3 of the drawings. The bearing sure faces 8 then rest snugly against the face of the object, and lateral pressure applied upon the handle portions in the plane of the tool in either direction will cause the corresponding bearing'surface 8 toroll over the said surface of the object as shown by dotanddash lines in Fig. 3. The bearing surface'18 thus forms a'fulcrum for the tool which serves as a lever, and it will be ob-' served that the contact point of the bearing surface with the surface of the object in the initial movement of theextracting operation is positioned closely adjacent the head of the Stap1e"O1;Il&ll: so that the maximum leverage is obtained at the initial movement of the extracting operation when the most power is required. v
, The sharply transversely curved knife edges 5 can be quickly and deeply embedded into. the object adjacent the staple or nail to be withdrawn, and the knife edges diverging inwardly act with a shearing operation on the material so as to. cut awayv the same from opposite. sides of the staple or nail head. The curved bearing surfaces 8 operate as fulcrums with a smoothly rolling action so as to provide a constantly moving fulcrum point which rendersthe withdrawing of a stapleornaila simple and easy operation.
. The pivotalportions of the members A areenlarged as at!) and halved together, the said portions of the respectivemembers Aybeing provided in the edges thereof with transverse slots 10,the said slot of one'of the members cooperating with the corresponding slot {of the other member to serve as "a wire cutter. The engaging and cooperating edges 11' of said slots are formed with knife edges which are i acutely angular in cross-section, thesaid edges being formed by inclining the correspondingsides 12of the slots 10 outwardly from the said edges 11. The knife edges 11 will thus keenly-and quicklycut wire or the like, the inclined sides 12 of the slots producing'a' true shearing action of the said a knife edges. 1
a The projections 7 of the jaws 3 in addition to serving as stops for preventing contact of the knife edges 5 also serve as pliers, and inwardly of said surfaces the jaws are formed with recesses'13' which cooperate for wire twisting operations. The inner nds of the handle portions 2 are also formed with cooperating toothed portions-14 for use in wire twisting and stretching operations.
By my improved construction of jaws 8, 8, I secure when said jaws are closed a head with. its oppositeisides'in substantially parallelplanes and its front end rounded longitudinally of the edge thereof for its entire length and curved transversely of said edge from one of said planes to the other, the faces of said jaws being oppositelyrecessed to provide walls which are substantially straight transversely of the head and which curve from the extreme ends of the jaws substantially to the parallel sides oftlie head; th gripping portions of the jaws thus have roundedly pointed cutters of substantially the thickness of the jaws and the cutting edges are continuous from side to side of the head Off-he tool. Said cutting edges therefore cut into the, wood on both sides of a staple sunk, flush with the surface.
of a post, oblique to the grain of.-the-wood,
and furthermore the cutters constructed as, pointed out have therequisite strengthfor,
said cutting edge tostand up under hard and rough usage. in the way described; A very durable and efiicient tool is thus secured by my improvements. 1
Having thus described the invention,*wha't I claim is: r v
'1.- A tool of the character described having a head formed of two jaws movable toward and from each other and formed ,with opposed cooperating faces, the outer ends of said jaws being similar and-longitudinally curved recedingly from said opposed faces thereof and transversely curved from side to side throughout their lengths so that the jaws are of substantially-uniform thickness throughout their lengths, the said opposed faces of said jaws being oppositely recessed divergingly inward from f the outer ends thereof, and said, recessed portions extending from side to side of said jaw to form roundedly pointed cutters vof substantially the I thickness" of the jaws which are continuous throughout the transverse curvature of the outer ends. of. the respective jaws, whereby each of said jaws is provided with a rugged penetrating point having -,curved cutting substantially straight transversely of said jaws and cutting edges extending fro nside to side of the respective jaws, whereby the edges of: said opposed faces for-m1 rugged roundedly. pointed, cutters and saidfa'ces 'serve'to grip anobject between them.
