To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN CAN FIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Holton, in the county of Jackson and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Camping Out fits, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to combined tents and beds adapted to be carried on or forming a part of the body portion of a motor driven vehicle, and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the efficiency and utility of devices of this character.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character including a body having outwardly 'extendable side portions, extensions to the side portions adapted to be disposed vertically relatively to and foldable within the side portions, a fabric canopy, and fold-able devices adapted to support said canopy from said side portions and over the extensions of said side portions.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character including a supporting body having means for supporting fabric canopy and with a swingi ig rear member adapted to form a table or shelf when in lower position.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention:

The improved device includes a support ing body in box like form and having a bottom portion 10, side portions 11, top portion 12, and rear portion 13, the latter hingedly connected to the bottom 10 at 14 and thereby adapted to be turned down into longitudinal alinement with the bottom 10 and forming a continuation of the same. Attached to the sides 11 of the body, preferably by staples 15, are combined hangers and strap members 16 jointed at 1T interme diate the end and with a slot 18 in the free end. The rear member 13 of the body is provided with staples 19 over which the slots 18 of the members 16 engage when the member 13 is closed, and secured in place by a pin 20 or other fastening device. By this means the member 13 may be held in closed position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

Extending from each end of the end member 3 is a staple or similar device 21 with which the slot 18 engages when the mem ber 10 is disposed in horizontal position as shown in Fig. 7, the members 16 thus being utilized to support the member 13 both in closed and open position. The pins 20 or other fastening devices will be engaged interchangeably with the staples 19 and 21, as will be obvious.

A tank 22 for water or other liquid is disposed vithin the body and provided with a filling cap 23 and draw 0E valve represented at 2 Extension side portions are provided, each comprising a longitudinal bottom member 25, a longitudinal side portion 26 rigidly connected at right angles to each other and with oblong end members 27 rigidly connected to the longitudinal members.

The side portions thus constructed are in box like form, as shown.

The members of the side portions hingedly united at 28 to the upper edges of the side members 11 of the body, so that the side portions may be folded inwardly upon the floor member 12, as shown in 1, or extender as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, with the members 25 and the floor member 12 in horizontal alinement as shown in Fig. 3, to form a continuous horizontal floor or bottom to the improved structure.

Mounted to swing upon the side r embers 11 of the body are bracket devices 29 which fold against the members 11 when the side portions are in closed position, as shov-a'n in Fig. 1, and extensible to support the side portions when the side portions are extended, as shown in Fig. 3.

The members 26 and 2? are reinforced at their junctures by corner posts 30, and hingedly united at 31 to the upper ends of the posts arev extension members 3;, the members at each side being connected by a horizontal rail 33.

Brace rods are swingingly coupled at 85 to the end portions 27, and are formed with terminal hooks 36 to engage staples 37 carried by the members By this means the extension portions are supported in vertical alinement with the posts 30 and the side. members 26 as shown in full lines in Figs. 2, 8, and 4, or peril-litter to fold into the position shown by dotted lines in Fi 3.

Coacting foldable end supports or braces are provided, one set of which is illustrated at Fig. 5, and each set con'iprising longitudinal members 41 and 4:2 with the confronting faces at one end reversely bevelled and the bevelled faces provided with half sockets 43 and the two members 41 and 42 being coupled by pivoted straps 15, so that the members ll and 41-2 are free to be disposed in the position shown in 3, when open, or closed for storage as shown in Fig.

, 5. A ridge member 46 extends between the coupled brace members 41 and 42, and is provided with pins 4-7 at the ends to engage in the half sockets 43 and 4st which unite around the pins when the brace members are distended as in Fig.

At their lower ends the brace members and -12 are formed respectively with th notches 1S and -19 to bear over the confronting upper corners of the end member: 2?, as illustrated at the lett in 3, to support the ridge member 46 in engagement with the canopy rabric.

The notches -18 and 4-9 are each preferably open at one site, and the open sides covered by metal plates 50 and 51, the closed sides of the notches and the plates 50 and coacting to prevent lateral displacement of the braces.

In painting the bed and mattress are folded on the bottom 12 and the detachable parts -11. and -16 are released from their positions and also placed on the bottom 12. The canopy 4-0 then drops down over the bet. and the sides and ends then folded over the other parts within the body.

A device of the class described comprising a body including a floor member, side portions each comprising longitudinal members at right angles to each. other and oblong end members connected to the longitudinal members, one of said longitudinal members of each side portion being hingedly united to the body and said side portions being foldable upon the top member of the body, means for supporting said side portions in o aen position, a canopy support comprising brace members having half sockets in their confronting faces at one end, coupling straps pivoted to the brace members ad acent the half sockets, said brace members adapted to end members connected to the longitudinal members, one of said longitudinal members of each side portion being hingedly united to the body and said side portions being foldable upon the top member of the body, means for supporting said side portions in open position, a canopy support comprising brace members having half sockets in their confronting faces at one end, coupling straps pivoted to the brace members adjacent the half sockets, said brace members adapted to be engaged with the confronting corners of the oblong members of the side portions when distended and the half sockets disposed in coactive relation, tie rods detachably coupled to the brace members when distended, and a ridge member having pins in the ends to engage in the closed half sockets.

7. A device of the class described comprising a body including a floor member, side portions each comprising longitudinal members at right angles to each other and oblong end members connected to the longitudinal members, one of said longitudinal members of each. side portion being hingedly united to the body and said side portions being foldable upon the top member of the body, means for supporting said side portions in open position, extension frame devices l ingedly connected to saic. side portions and foldable relative thereto, means for supporting said frame devices in extended position, extension blocks swinging from said extension frame devices to extend the length of the same, a canopy support comprising brace members hingedly united at one end and notched at the other ends to engage the confronting corners of the oblong end members of the side portions, a ridge member supported by said brace members. and a fabric canopy engaging over said ridge member braces and extension frame devices and held in spaced relation to the ends of the body by the extension blocks.
