FREDERICK A. DAVIESAND CARL L ROGERS, on WILKINSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
EAa' BASIN:
Application filed August 26,1922; Serial No. 584,438;
following is a specification.
This invention relates to receiving devices, and more particularly to what we term an ear basin.
One of the main objects of the invention is to provide a device of simple and efficient construction which may be readily applied and held in position on the patients car so as to permit freedom of the physicians hands. A further object is to provide a device which, when applied, will serve to catch the overflow from the patients ear when the ear is irrigated, permitting the Washing solution to be discharged into. a suitable container While retaining the solid substances which are removed from the ear to permit the latter to be examined by the physician. Further objects will appear from the detailed description.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective end View of the device;
Figure 2 is a side view;
Figure 3 is a central longitudinal section through the device;
Figure 41 is an inner end View of the device, the method of use being indicated.
The device includes a. troughlike basin or receptacle 1 formed of sheet metal or any other suitable material, bottom 2 of which is inclineddownwardly from the outer end wall 3 toward the inner end wall 4. Adjacent to the inner end wall 1 a nipple 5 is secured through bottom 2, this nipple being provided at its upper end with a perforated strainer 6 of substantially hemi-spherical shape which fits snugly against bottom 2. At its lower end the nipple is provided with an enlargement 7 which is adapted for insertion into the end portion of a rubber tube 8 by means of which the liquid flowing into.
end wall 4. Each arm 10 is provided in its outer portion-with aseries of notches'12 which are adapted toengage with the arms of brackets 11 for securing the bail in adjustment.- To facilitate adjustment of the bail, each arm 10 is provided at its lower end with a ring. 13. By forcing the rings toward each other the arms 10 are disengaged from brackets 11 thus permitting ready adjustment of bail 9, it being understood that the bail possesses resiliency and ear lobe extending downwardly over cutout 4* so as to cover the same; as indicated in Fig. 1. With the device in the position described, end plate 45* rests against the jaw of the patient, this end plate and the bail 9 being both inclined upwardly and inwardly toward the side of the patients head, as illustrated in Figures 2 and 3, so as to be held in substantially the position illustrated in Figures 2 and 3. l Vhen the ear is irri gated, the solution used and the materials removed from the ear will be discharged into basin 1, the solution flowing through strainer 6, nipple 5 and tube 8. The solid particles of materials removed from the ear will remain in basin 1 so as to permit the same to be examined by the physician at his leisure. This provides a very simple and efficient device which may be readily produced at small cost and, when applied, permits absolute freedom of use of both hands of the physician, which is an important consideration in devices of this sort. What we claim is 1. In a device of the character described, a receptacle adapted to fit behind and about the lower portion of a persons ear, and a member adjustably secured to the receptacle and adapted to fit about the upper portion of the ear and co-operating with said receptacle for holding the same in position upon and about the ear.
gage over and aboutthe upper portion of the ear. I
3. In a device of the character described, atroughlike receptacle closed at both ends "and having a bottom wall inclined from one end toward the other end of the receptacle, and a member adjustably secured to the receptacle and adapted for engagement about a a patients ear, the end o1 the receptacle at the lower end of said bottom wall being adapted for coaction with said member for securing the device in position adjacent to and extending outwardly from the patients ear.
4. In a device of the character described, a troughlilze receptacle having its bottom wall inclined from its outer end to its inner end, said receptacle being closed at both ends, and a bail adjustably secured to the receptacle adjacent to the inner end thereof and adapted for engagement over a patients ear, the inner end wall of the receptacle being cut away to fit about the lower portion of the patients ear and to co-operate with said bail for holding the receptacle in position.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures.
FREDERICK A. DAVIES. 1 CARL L. ROGERS.
