IMPROVEMENT IN HATCHETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,926, dated May 1'2, 1874; application filed March IS, 1874.
To all whm it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMns A. WIsNnn, of the city of East Saginaw, county of Saginaw and State of Michigan7 have invented a Hatchet, of which the following is a speeiiieation:
The objeet of my invention is to forni animpleinent for the purpose of drawing nails from packing-boxes, and of lifting bands from boxes after heilig eut; a-nd the nature of theinvention consists in providing a hatehet having a fuleruin with a claw with a pair of dogs, to serve as an additional fulernin, for the purpose of drawing nails without bending, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
Figure 1 is a side perspective view, showing dogs and claws hanging loose. Fig. 2 is a detail of claw, marked B. Fig. 3 is a perspective View in front, showing the position of claws and dogs when drawing a nail. Fig. 4 is an enlarged side View of claws and dogs when in position to drawnails. Fig. 5 is a View from above the hatehet, showin g relative position of dogs and claws. E in Fig. 3 is the eye in the hatehet where the bolt for fastening` the dogs passes through.
In drawing a nail, the claw ofthe hatehet is plaeed near the head of the nail intended to be drawn, while the handle of the hatchet is in a nearly perpendicular position. In pressing downward on the handle, dogs A and B enter the wood surface, and thereby force the claw ofthe hate-het under the head of the nail. By then pressing downward on the handle a leverage is formed with fuleruin 1), which lifts the nail out of the wood as straight as when driven.
In prying bands from boxes the band is irst ent with the hatehet, and the end of fuleruin I) placed under the band to pry it oli'.
I elaini as my invention- The herein-described implement, consisting otl a hatehet having the i'uleruin D, claw U, and eye E, when protided with the dogs A B and bolt for fastening the saule, all constructed and operating in the manner as and for the purpose speeitied.
JAMES A. VISNER.
