C. B. M CALLUM WOOD OR THE LIKE WORKING ACCESSORY Filed June 19 j 1924.
INVENTOR C/iar/as 5. MQfl/om ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 4, 1924.
, UNITED STATES CHARLES B. MCCALLUM, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
WOOD OR THE LIKE TTTORKENG ACCESSORY.
Appflication filed June 19, 1924.
To all whom it concern Be it known that I, Cnarmns B. lilcCsii- LUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wood or the like WVorking Accessories, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved wood or the like working accessory, and has for its primary object to provide means whereby nails or the like may be temporarily but securely driven into a board, block, strip or other such embedding base, and readily ex tracted or withdrawn from securement with the aid of the accessory in a convenient and time-saving manner.
The several features of the invention will be readily appreciated upon reference to the accompanying sheet of drawings and the following detailed description thereof.
In said drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of the pulling or drawing implement, and Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same in section along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is an end view of the implement of Fig. at is a plan of the shim member of the invention, and Fig. 5 is an edge view of the same in section along the line 5 5 of the said figure; and Fig. 6 is an end view of the shim.
Fig. 7 is a horizontal section of a doorway construction showing one use of the accessory in combination with a removable metal ground, and Fig. 8 is a vertical face view of the ground of Fig. 7 and illustrates the use of the shim member of the invention as applied to the said ground.
Fig. 9 is a plan of the shim and the pulling implement; the shim is engaged beneath the head of a nail and the implement member embraces the shimthe first step previous to pushing the shim from engagement with the nail.
Fig. 10 is a similar view of the pulling implement with the shim removed from beneath the nail head, and shows the implement beneath the nail head and substituted for the shim.
Fig. 11 is a view in front elevation of the pulling implement as equipped with a different form of handle.
Referring to the drawings in detail: the number 12 represents the shim member and which I prefer to stamp or otherwise pro- Serial No. 721,075.
duce from metallic material, so as to derive a relatively thin block-like piece of a width and thickness suitable for the purpose. This shim is provided with an open slot 13 having rabbeted corners 141- and 15. The slot 13 is adapted to straddle a nail or the like 16, and the rabbeted corners are adapted to cooperate with the projecting tapered studs 17 and 18 at the corners of the open slot 19 in the pulling or extracting implement 20 for guiding and prying purposes.
The implement 20 is made with a relatively large and squared opening 21, and of a width to receive the shim 12 so that the studs 17 and 18 may engage the rabbeted corners 1d and 15. and the slot 19 register with the slot 13, Fig. 9, so as to leave a relatively long opening for the nail when the parts are placed together.
The two opposite side edges of the shim are beveled, as at 22 and 23, and the two corresponding edges of the opening 21 of the implement member are likewise beveled to make a fit for guiding and prying purposes also.
The important object of the invention is to provide means which may be inserted or placed beneath a nail or the like head, so that the nail may be driven tightly into a board or the like as a temporary holding means, and thereafter be removed without injury to the wood or support, and the inconvenience of getting a tool under the head such as would be the case if the nail head i was driven in to contact with the surface of the board. With my accessory I can simply insert one of these shims under each nail head, when nearing the final drive, so that the slot 13 straddles the nail shank. The nail may then be driven home and the full securing effect of the same realized. and at the same time leaving it readily pullable by first removing the shim, and the same removing member adapted to withdraw the nail almost simultaneously.
To remove the shim, the implement is introduced to the shim as best shown in Fig. 9, so that the studs 17 and 18 engage the corners 1 1 and 15, and a portion of the shim is received within and embraced by the sides of the opening 21. This leaves the two slots 13 and 19 in registry relation, so that athrust or push on the implement member will slide the shim from under the nail head. After the shim has thus been released, the nail is now straddled by the slot 19, Fig. 10, and
the same may be pulled out by pressing down on the handle of the implement member.
The release of the shim and the nailextracting operation is practically one and the same, that is to say the pulling operation is nothing more than a continuation of the shim releasing act. The entire operation is simply a thrust forward and then a push downward. The handle of the implement is curved, as bestshown in Fig. 2, to effect the desired leverage for the pulling step.
For heaving work I would suggest making the pulling implement with a stout handle bar as shown in Fig. 11.
The accessory will work to advantage in many different instances, where nails or the like headed securing means are employed as a temporary medium for fastening two or more parts together. As an example, I can refer to Figs. 7 and 8, wherein I have shown the accessory in combination with a metal ground A as used in the plasterers art. In this particular case, the ground A must be temporarily fastened to the studding B of a doorway, to provide for a uniform thickness of plastered wall G about the doorway. The accessory also finds expression as a most convenient device for pattern makers, and in a host of other arts where the same fastoning principle is involved.
While I have thus described the preferred form of my invention, I wish to have it understood that changes may be made within the scope of the claims hereto attached with out affecting the spirit of the invention, therefore, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is the following:
1. An accessory of the class described, comprising a slotted shim and a jawed and slotted implement having a curved handle, the opposite sides of the shim and the corresponding sides of the jaws being beveled for guiding purposes, the shim adapted to be engaged beneath the head of a nail or the like fastening means with its slot straddling the nail, and the implement adapted to embrace the shim and by a downward thrust remove the shim and engage its slot under the nail head, and by a backward movement of the handle of the implement withdraw the nail from service.
2. In an accessory of the class described, a shim having a slot and adapted to be placed beneath the head, of a nail or the like fastening means and with the nail received in said slot, means for removing said shim after the nail has been driven into a support comprising an implement having a jawed-opening adapted to embrace the shim and a slot in said opening adapted to register with the in said opening adapted to register with the H slot in the shim, and a handle for thrusting the implement against the shim to pushthe same from beneath the head of the nail, the said slot in the implement adapted to straddle the nail after the release of the shim and the implement further adapted to withdraw the nail.
4s. The combination as set forth in claim 3, and in which the corners of the shim at opposite sides of the open slot are rabbeted and the implement provided with studs adapted to engage said rabbeted corners substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
CHARLES '13. MoOALLUM.
