UNITED lSTATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADJUSTABLE cnam.
Application led December 14, 1923. Serial No. 680,696.
To all whom t may camera.'
Be it known that I, CLARENCE G. EnwARns, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and yState of California,`have 'invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to chairs and particularly to adjustable chairs.
The general. bject of my invention is to provide a chair comprising an adjustable seat, an adjustable back, an adjustable leg rest and an adjustable foot rest.
A more particular object is to' provide a chair with a back which may be adjusted forwardly or backwardly in several places and at different angles.
Another object isto providey a chair or seat having the adjustable features described, lwhich may be adapted for use in street cars,
automobiles and other vehicles.
Other objects and advantages will appear hereinafter and while I show herewith and will describe a preferred form of construction, I desire to be understood that I do not limit my invention to such preferred formA but that various changes and adaptations may be made. therein without departing from the spirit of my invention as hereinafter claimed.
Fig. 1 is a front view in elevation of one kform of my adjustable chair.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the chair shown in Fig. 1 takenv on the line 2-2 of that figure.
Fig. 3 is a side view in elevation of `the chair shown in Fig. 1, showing the parts in different adjustment from that of Figures 1 and 2, and having cushions added thereto.
My chair comprises a pair of side frame members 1--1, a seat 2, a back 3, a leg rest 4, and a foot rest 5.
The seat 2 is formed with a transversely] elongated knuckle 6 at its rear edge and; wit a plurality of transversely elongated knuckles 7 at its forward edge, through which rear knuckle and forward knuckles res tively extend elongated bolts 8 and 9, w ich bolts also extend throu h vertical slots 10 and 11 respectively in t e side frame members 1--1.
Heads 12'on one end of said bolts engage the outside of one of the side frame members 1, while thumb nuts 13 screw on the The leg rest comprises an upper plate 15' and a lower plate 16, which upper plate is formed with knuckles 17 on its upper edge which fit between the forward knuckles 7 of the seat 2 and receive the bolt 9, whereby the leg rest and foot rest are supported and kmay be adjusted up or down with the forward edge of the seat as above described.
The leg rest and foot rest may also be swung up on the bolt 9 when the nut 13 is loosened as shown in Fig. 3.
The plates 15 and 16 of the leg rest are adjustably secured together by means of bolts 18 and nuts 19, which bolts are seated in and extend through the plate 4 and extend through Vertical slots 16 in the plate 16.
Uppn loosening said nuts 19 the plate 16 and foot rest 5 may be moved upwardly or downwardly to lengthen or shorten the leg rest and foot rest. Braces 20-20 are pivoted at 21 to the side frame members 1-1, .which braces may be swung forwardly into engagementwithv the under side of the leg rest 4 to Support said rest and the foot rest in a forwardly elevated position as shown in Fig. 3. When the leg rest and foot rest are lowered as shown in Fig. 2, the braces 20 may be swung back out of the way against a frame connecting bar 22, which connects the lower forward parts of the side frame members 1-1.
The foot rest 5 is formed with knuckles 25 on its rear edge which t between knuckles 26 formed on the lower edge of le rest late 16, and a bolt 27 extends throug said nuckles whereby said foot rest is pivotally mounted on the lower end of the leg rest.
A head 28 is formed on one end ofthe bolt 27, which head engages one end of the foot rest 5, while 'a thumb nut 29 screws on the other end of said bolt against the other end of said foot rest whereY the foot rest may be adjusted and secur atvarious angles to the leg rest 4.
The back 3 is made in a pluralitof superimposed plates 30, 31 and 32. he lower edge of the lower plate 30 is formed with a transversely elongated knuckle 33 through which extends a bolt 34, which bolt also extends through slots 35-35 extending in a transverse direction in the side frame members 1 1. A head 36 is formed on one end of the bolt 35, which head engages the outside of one side frame member 1, while a thumb nut 37 screws on the other end of said bolt against the outside of the other sidey frame member 1, whereby the lower end of the back plate 30 may be adjusted forwardly and backwardly of said yframe members and secured in adj usted position upon tightening said nut. A plurality of knuckles 38 lare formed on the upper edge of the late 30 and a plurality of transversely e ongated knuckles 39 are formed on the lower edge of the plate 31 fitting between said knucklesy 38, t rough which knuckles extend a bolt 40, which also extends through transverse slots 41 in the side frame members 1 1. A
A head 42 is formed on one end of the bolt and engages the outside of one frame member 1, while a nut 43 screws on the other end of said bolt against the outside of the other frame member 1, by means of which bolt the u per edge of plate 30 and the lower edge of p ate31 are pivoted together so that they may be adjusted forwardly or backwardly and secured in adjusted position upon tightening the nut 43.
A plurality of knuckles 45 are formed on the upper edge of the plate 31 and a plurality of transversely elongated knuckles 46 are formed on the lower edge of the plate 32 itting between the knuckles 45 through which knuckles extend a bolt 47 which also extends through transverse slots 48 48 in the side frame members 1 1. A head 49 is formed onone end of bolt 47 and engages the outside of one side frame member l., while a nut 50 screws on the other end of atraen said bolt a ainst the outside of the other frame mem er by means of -which bolt the upper and lower edges of plates 31 and 32 are pivoted together so that they may be adj usted forwardly or ba'ckwardly and held in adjusted position upon ti htening the nut 50.
A knuckle 51 is form on the upper edge of the plate 32 through which knuckle extends a bolt'52 which also extends through transverse slots 53--53 in the side frame members 1 1, whereby the upper ed e of said plate may be adjusted forward y or backwardly. A head 54 is formed on one end of said boltl and engages the outside of one of the frame members 1, while a nut 55 screws on the other end of said bolt against the outside of said other frame member whereby the upper'edge of the plate 32 is secured in adjusted position.
The chair may be formed with arms on the side frame members 1 1. A back wall 61 may be secured to the back edges of the side frame members 1 1 rearwardly of the back 3. Cross bars 62` and 63 may connect the lower rear portion of the side frame members 1 1.
Cushions 65, 66 and 67 may be respectively secured on the seat 2, back 3 and leg rest 4.
I claim as my invention:
A chair comprising side frame members provided with corresponding transverse slots, a back comprising a plurality of sec tions formed with inter-engaging knuckles at their meeting edges, bolts extending respectively through said corresponding slots and through the interengaging knuckles respectively, nuts on the ends of said bolts for engaging said side members respectively, and a seat for the chair mounted between said side frame members.
