Jan 6| I l w. BEACH ETKAL DISSBCTING TABLE Filed Novv 9.` 1925 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 ATTO RN EY Fatented Jan. 6, 1925.
. FE E o DISSECTING TABLE.
Application nled November 9, 1923. Serial No. 673,817.
To all whom it may conce/rn:
Be it known that we, 1V ATsoN BEACH and CLIFTON F. McCLiN'rIo, citizens of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county7 of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Dissecting Table, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a dissecting table, which is adapted for use in human anatomical laboratories.
The general object of the invention 1s to provide a table 4for this purpose having a top or platform of suitable dimensions and adapted to support a cadaver in proper position for dissection, and having a tank adapted to contain a suitable preservative and normally supported beneath the platform, so that the cadaver may be lowered therein when not being worked upon. Suitable mechanically operated cables, or other adjustable means, are provided for raising i or lowering the platform to the desired position, and it is also desirable, butnot necessary, to provide covers of specific construction for closing over the tank when the cadaver is lowered thereinto, which covers may be swung downwardly out of the way beneath the table when the platform is raised.
The nat-ure of the invention and the advantages thereof will be more fully explained in connection with the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the preferred form of the invention.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view ofthe invention with` the platform lowered and one of the covers open. Y
Figure 2 is a vertical cross section of the invention.
Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal section thereof.
Figure 4 is an end elevation.
Figure 5 is a detail sectional view through the tank, showing the means for supporting the same. y
The table, which constitutes our invention, is mounted upon a rectangular frame having top side rails 10, connected by end rails 11 and supported by posts 12, between which extend suitable braces 13. This frame is preferably made from iron tubing, such as is used for hospital beds, so that the same may be kept in sanitary condition. A plurality of straps 14, with their end portions bent upwardly, are secured to the side rails 10, and form saddles for supporting a rectangular tank 15 within the frame. Y This tank is of sulicient size to entirely enclose a cadaver, and may be partially filled with brine or other preservative, within Vwhich l the cadaver may be immersed when not being worked upon, thereby to prevent decomposition and to keep the laboratory clean and sanitary. The tank 15 is provided in its bottom near one corner with a drain pipe 15a.
The platform or top of the table 16 is of a shape and size to be freely received within the tank 15, and is preferably provided with f a peripheralreinforcing flange 17. Secured to the platform at each end thereof are eyes 18 to which the ends, of cables 19 are secured,
whereby the platform may be suspended at Y Each 'cable 19 is 7 any desired elevation. trained over a sheave 20, mounted in a bracket 21 secured to one of the end rails 11.
The outer end of the cable extends downwardly and is secured to a yoke 22, which has outturned ends 23 journaledv in the end posts 12, one yoke being provided at each end of the frame. The intermediate portion of each yoke is provided with an outwardly extending crank or handle 24, which, when the yoke is swung downwardly and the platl* form 16 raised, may be secured underneath a spring hook 25, which is'secured to one of the straps 14. Each yoke is curved inwardly, as shown at 38, so that when the yokes are lowered and the cadaver raised, as shown in Figure 8, for dissecting purposes, the yokes will not be in the way of the student. Y t
A pair of covers 26 are provided, having hinge straps 27 formed with eyes 28, which 31 are provided with suitable notches through which the cables 19 may pass when the covers are closed.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that we have provided a convenient, practical and sanitary device for the purpose described. The tank 15 is preferably removable from the saddle straps 14, so that all lill Cgi
parts of the device may be easily cleaned. lVhen the student is workingon a cadaver, the latter is supported, as shown in Figure 3, in a convenient position, and the yokes 22 are retained by the hooks 25. When the student has linished his laboratory session,
the cadaver is lowered within the tank l5, where it will be completely preserved in eX- actly the same condition, until such a time as the student may desire to continue his work.
lVhil-e we have shown and described :the structure ofthe invention lwith considerable detail, it is to `be understood that thisI is merely illustrative, and that many modilifations may be made. therein without departing` from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the claims.
lVhat is claimed is: Y
l. In a `devicecf the-character described, the coi'nbination of a frame having side and endl rails, a tank-normally supported within the frame, a platform, provided with means for vraisingv and lowering` it within the tank, and covers hinged to the side rails and ccn operating to forma closure over the top of the tank-when the platforn'i is loweredand swingableoutwardly and downwardly into depending relation totheir hingesso as to be -out of the way when the platform is raised.l
2. In adevice of the character described, the combination of a frame,v a tank adapted to be supportedy within; theA frame, Aa top or platform, cables by means of which the same is'supporte'd within the tank, sheaves over which the cables are trained,a yoke pivoted at each end of the frame and connected with therrespectiver cables and operableV when swung about its pivot to raiseY or lower the platform, and means for locking the yokes withI the f platform raised.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination ofl a frame having side and end rails,A means for supportingV a tank within the frame below saidA rails, a top or platform, cables by means of which the same is supported within the tank, sheaves over nsaaaea which the cables are trained, means connected with therespective cables and operable to raise or lower the platform, and covers hinged to the side rails and movable to closethel tank when the platform is lowered.
Ll. In a device of the character described, the combination of a frame, means for supporting` a tank within the frame, a top er platform, cables by means of which the same is supported within the tank, sheaves over which the cables are trained, means connected with the cables andoperable to raise or lower the platform, means for locking the last'named means with the platform raised, and 'covers hinged to the side rails and movable to close the tank when the platform is lowered,1 said covers having` notches in their ends through which the cables may pass when the covers are closed.
5. In adevice of the character` described. the combination of ya fram-e having end and side rails, meansf for supporting a tank within the frame below the rails, a top or platform, cables by meansof which the same is supported 'withinA thetank, sheaves overI which the cables are trained, a yoke pivoted at each end of the frame and connected with the respective cables and operable when swung about its pivot to raise or low-er the platfornn-saidr.yokes being curvedf so as to rest withinthe frame when the platformfis raised, and means for locking the yokes in that position.`
6. In a device of the characterdescribed, the combination vof a frame', a tank supported within theframe, a platform within the tank, yokes pivotedv to.opposite ends of-r the frame and .operatively connected to ther platform to'raiseand lower the samewithin the tank, and means for locking saidsyokes to hold the platform -in raised position.rv
In testimony that we claim the foregoing` as our own, we have hereto afxed our signatures.kr e e v VVUVLTSON.BEACH.
