O. A. KNIGHT SPLICING BENCH Filed Sept, 19, 1922 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 @ttm mm1 Patented dan. 1925.
UNITED STATES OSCAR A. KNIGHT, OF GLACIER, WASHINGTON.
SPLICING BENCH.
Application led September 19, 1922.
To all 107mm may conce/m.'
Be it known that Oscar` A. KNIGHT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing' at Glacier, in the county of Thatcom and State of Viashington, has invented new and useful Improvements in Splicing' Benches, of which the following is a speciiication.
The object of the invention is to provide a comparatively simple and efficient apparatus for splicing or putting terminal loops or eyes in cables and particularly wire cables; and with this object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side view, and
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of a splicing apparatus embodying the invention.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view on the plane indicated by the line 3--3 of Figure 2.
Figure t is a detail View of the cylinder,
Figures 5 and 6 are similar views of the feed screw and follower respectively.
Figure 7 is a transverse sectional view on the plane indicated by the line 7-7 of Figure 2.
The apparatus consists essentially of a cylinder 10 revolubly mounted upon a suitable supporting frame consisting in the construction illustrated of a base 11 having a standard 12 provided with a sleeve bearing 13 in which the cylinder is mounted and which is provided with means for engaging a cable 14 which is to be spliced or in an end of which is to be formed a splice eye or loop. Preferably a clamping device in the nature of a vise 15 is supported by the base at a point remote from the cylinder and in alignnient therewith for clamping and holding the body portion of the Acable during the splicing operation.
The means carried by the cylinder for engaging the cable consist of a follower fitted in an axial guide opening 17 in the cylinder and provided with a terminal hook 1S, together with a feed or jack screw 19 having a swivelled bearing against one end of the cylinder and threaded into a bore of the follower, so that the rotation of the feed screw serves to cause a lineal axial movement of the follower of which the terminal hook is Serial No. 589,264.
engaged with the cable. The screw is provided with a cross arm operating handle 20, and the end of the cylinder adjacent to the hook 18 is provided with a funnel shaped cavity 21 into which the engaged bight of the cable is drawn to give the desired bend or loop thereto and bring the loose end of the cable back to a position adjacent to the body portion of the cable so as to facilitate the engagement of the terminals of the strands with the body portions of the strands in the formation of the splice.
In order to loosen the strands of the body portion of the cable to facilitate the passing of the terminals of the strands thereunder the cylinder is adapted to be rotated or turned in the direction of unwinding or untwisting the cable strands while the body portion of the cable is held by the clamp 15. To this end one of the terminal flanges of the cylinder is provided with a handle 23, and in order that the cylinder may be locked in its adjusted positions to hold the cable in the untwisted or loosened condition during the splicing operation a locking pin 24 is provided for engagement with an opening 25 in the sleeve bearing 13 and one of a series of corresponding openings 26 in the cylinder.
Having engaged the cable at a sufficient distance from the end in which the loop is to be formed by means of the clamp 15 and having passed the end of the cable through the hook 18 the feed screw should be operated to draw the loose end of the cable into the socket or cavity 21 to cause the proper kink or bend therein as above indicated, whereupon the cylinder should be turned by means of the handle 23 to su'fliciently untwist or loosen the strands of the body portion of the cable between the hook 1S and the clamp 15 so that through the use of the Marlin spike or like tool employed in this connection the eXtremities of the strands atthe free end of the cable may be inserted under the body portion of the cable. rFhis having been accomplished the cylinder may again be turned in one direction or the other as desired to facilitate the engagement of the free ends of the engaged strands with other strands to complete the lock or splice, after which the loop thus formed may be released from the follower.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is 9.. A splicing apparatus havinga rotary;
