faygwf UNITED STATES PATENT CFFICE.
JAMES V. BISHOP AND TILLIAM P. FRENCH, OF IVASI'IINGTON, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WEATHER-STRIPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,324" dated June 23, 1874; application tiled April 18,1874.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that we, J AMEs V. BIsIIoP and WILLIAM P. FRENCH, of iashingtoin in the county of Washington and State ot' Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in feather-Strips; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making` a part of this specication, and to the letters and igures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 ot' the drawing is a representation of a horizontal section of our device, and Fig. 2 is a detail view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same.
Thisinvention has relation to weather-strips for outside doors; and it consists in the combination of a iixed retaining strip, a springguard strip, and a hinged weather-strip with a suitable packing, and a segment-shaped sillsupport for the weathenstrip when the door is open, as will be hereinafter explained.
In the annexed drawings, A designates a door-frame, B the door, and O the door-sill, which latter has a segment-shaped extension, C', formed at the hinged side ot' the door. D designates a thin strip of metal of suitable width, and of a length nearly equal to the width of the door. This strip, which is the weather-strip proper, is suitably hinged to the door at a, so that when the door is shut it will overhang the front edge of the sill G, as shown in Fig. 3, and when the door is open this strip will rest upon the sill-extension O. E designates a strip of spring metal, which is secured to the door by its upper edge, so as to overhang the upper portion of the weather-strip D, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. F designates another narrow strip of metal, which is permanently secured to the door, so as to overlap the upper edge of the strip E. This strip E is removable, and is secured in its place by means ot' screws which passthrough the overlapping edge of the upper strip F. Between the strips D and E and the door we apply a packing, b, of cloth or india-rubber, which will prevent rain from beating in behind the weather-strip.
Strips D, which are hung as described, will sometimes become inoperative, in consequence of substances getting between them and the door. For this reason we employ the intermediate strip E, which can be readily removed when it is desired to obtain access to the upper hinged part of the strip D.
NV hat we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of the intern'lediate removable strips E with the strips D F, substantially as described.
2. The packing b combined with strips D, E, and F, substantially as described.
ln testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES V. BISHOP. IVM. P. FRENCH.
