Patented Feb. 10, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE.
BOOK COVER.
Application filed February 15, 1924. Serial No. 693,032.
To all whom it may concern:
,Be it known that I, ELLSWORTH M. PAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at idyracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Book Cover, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to book covers of the sectional type.
The object of the invention is to provide a cover of this character the sections of which are adjustable to fit books of different sizes within certain limits and which may be extended and expanded in one movement rendering it simple and quick to apply.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the preciseembodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a plan view of the two sections from which the cover is constructed shown in juxtaposition ready for use; and
Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the cover shown applied, the book being shown in dotted lines.
The cover constituting the invention comprises two substantially rectangular duplicate sections 1 and 10 adapted to be arranged in reverse position the body portions 2 and 11 of which are provided with flaps 3 and 12 to interlap beyond lines i and 13 and which are designed to be arranged in superposed relation when the sections are assembled to cover the rear portion of a book as shown at 20 in Fig. 2. The fiapS is provided on its inner face adjacent its outer edge with inucilage or other sealing material 8 so that when the flaps are overlapped this edge may be sealed in position to hold the sections assembled.
The body portion 2 of section 1 is provided with upper and lower end flaps 5 and 6 which are designed to be folded inwardly, flap 5 being foldable along the line in alinement with the upper edge of flap 3 while flap (3 is foldable along line 7 spaced from the lower edge of flap 3. A front flap 9 flaps inwardly from the front edge of section 2 under the top flap 5 and said flaps 5 and 9 are gluedtogether t the corner as shown in' Fig, 1.. l
The rear flaps 3 and 12 of the two sections are shown of the same length and width, flap 3 terminating at its lower end short of the body portion 2 while flap 12 terminates short at its upper end of the body portion 11 so that when the sections are assembled they may be adjusted to fit books of different lengths and yet the back portions of the books be completely covered.
In the use of this cover the section 10 is applied by slipping'it on the bottom of the back lid or cover of the book with the flaps let and 17 overlapping the book cover. The flap 15 is then turned in over the top edge of the back lid of the book and sealed, glue 18 being shown at one corner of flap 15 for this purpose. The flap ,12 is wrapped around the back of the book. Then with the book lying on a support, section 1 is applied to the front lid by slipping the upper and front edges of the lid under the flaps 5 and 9. The flap 6 is then turned up over the lower edge of the lid and glued, mucilage being shown applied at 6 and 6 for this purpose. The flap 3 is then drawn snugly over flap 12 and glued thereto by moistening the mucilage shown at 8.
A cover constructed as shown and described presents a neat, sightly appearance without any seam at the center of the back of the book. 7
It will thus be seen that this cover may be very quickly applied and that the manner of adjusting the sections provides for extension and expansion in one movement, at the same time providing double thickness where the principal wear comes on the cover.
1. A. bookcover comprising two substantially rectangular duplicate sections to be applied in reverse position, said sections having overlapping flaps at their meeting edges, the body portion of one section being longer at one end than its flap and that of the other section being longer at the opposed end, to provide for the longitudinal adjustment of said sect-ions to fit books of different sizes.
2. A book cover comprising two substantially rectangular duplicate sections to be arranged in reverse position, the body portions of said sections being provided with flaps along their meeting edges to be arranged in superposed relation when the sections are assembled, each body portion having flaps at its ends and front edge, the body portions of one section terminating short at one end of the meeting edge flapand the body portion of the other section terminating short at the other end of its meeting edge flap whereby extensions are formed at opposite ends of said body section adapted 10 to be folded to provide for the use of the cover on shorter books, said rear edge flaps being adjustable longitudinally on each other to fit books of different lengths.
In testimony that I claim the foregoii'ig as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
