w. G. MORRIS GOLF ANDASIMILAR BALL' Filed Nov. 1, 1922 LITHARGE. OR LIKE GUTTA- PE. RCHA SUBSTANCE CENTRE CORE RUBBER STRIP INVENTOR I WILLIAM GEORGE MORRIS;
By his I Patented Mar. 17, 1925.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM GEORGE MORRIS, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
GOLF AND SIMILAR BALL.
A Application filed November 1, 1922. Serial No. 598,427.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM Gnonen Mon- R1s,a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 74: Merton Road, WVimbledon,
5 London, England, have invented new and useful Improvements Relating to Golf and Similar Balls, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to golf or similar balls.
In the present manufacture of golf balls, the usual practice'is to load the material of the centre portion or core of the ball. The weighted centre portion is then wound with rubber strip or tape under tension, and a cover of the material usually employed. and known as gutta percha which generally consists of an admixture of gutta percha with balata rubber or other like substances is then lippilied and the cover painted to finish the It is found in practice that it is very difficult to construct the weighted centre so that it retains its symmetry "during the winding operation and to locate the weighted centre symmetrically at the centre of the ball. These defects aifectthe flight of the ball and the object of the present invention is to obviate the defects and thereby improve the flight. The drawing is an enlarged sectional view of my improved golf ball.
According to this invention in pace of loading the centre portion of the ball, I load the gutta percha material of which the cover is made. A material suitable for covering the ball is obtained by mixing litharge with the said gutta percha material, say in the proportion of equal parts by weight of litharge and gutta percha material. Tungsten powder of other like substance of high spe cific gravity may be used alone or in conjunction with litharge.
In the drawing, 1 indicates tne central core, 2 indicates the winding made of a rubber strip, and 8 indicates the covering of gutta-percha, litharge, or like substance.
Where in the claims gutta-percha material is specified or gotta-percha it is understood that balata is considered an equivalent of gutta-percha or the usual mixture of 'guttapercha and balata or rubber, it being understood that the invention consists in providing a covering of the ball which is usually made of What is known as gutta-percha material or gutta-percha with a substance of high specific gravity such as litharge.
It is also to be understood that the term cover where used refers to the outer shell of the ball which is struck by the club.
What I claim is 1. A golf ball having a central portion of relatively light material and cover containing a mixture of gutta-percha material and a substance of high specific gravity.
2. A golf ball consisting of a central portion of relatively light material, a Winding of rubber disposed around the central portion of the ball, and a cover for such winding "composed of a mixture of gutta-percha material and a substance of high specific gravity.
3. A golf ball consisting of a central portion of relatively light material, a winding of rubber around the central portion of the ball, and a cover for such winding composed of a mixture of balata, gutta-percha and asubstance of relatively high specific gravit a. A golf ball consisting of a central portion of relatively light material, a winding of rubber disposed around the central portion of the ball, and a cover for such winding composed of a mixture of guttapercha material and litharge.
5. A golf ball having a central portion of relatively light material and cover containing a mixture of gutta-percha material and litharge.
6. A golf ball consisting v1. a central portion of relatively light material, a winding of rubber disposed around the central portion of the ball, and a cover composed of a mixture of balata, gutta-percha andlitharge.
7. A golf ball consisting of a central portion of relatively light material, a winding of rubber disposed around the central portion of the ball, and a cover consisting of equal quantities of gutta-percha material and litharge.
8. A material for use in the manufacture of covers for golf or similar balls, consistture of covers for golf or similar balls, made ing of amixtureof gutta-percha material of a mixture of gutta-percha material 10 l and a substance of high specific gravity. and litharge in equal proportions.
9. A material for use in the manufacture In testimony that I claim the foregoing as g 5 of covers for golf or similar balls, consistmyinvention I have signed my name this ing of gutta-percha material admixed 23rd day of October, 1922. with litharge.
10. A material for use in the manufac- WILLIAM GEORGE MORRIS.
