ASHER GOLDEN ELLIS M. PGTTER, U1? NEW YORK, N. Y.
STAMP AFFIXER.
Application filed April 13, 1822.
To all to /1.0m it may concern.
Be it known that we, Asians German and ELLIS M. Porrnn, citizens of the United States, and both residents of the borough of Manhattan, city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have ointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Stamp Affixer, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a stamp affiXer. The object of the invention is the production of a device, whereby postage stamps, labels and the like, which are connected in strips and with an adhesive on one side, can be easily detached from the strips and applied to envelopes or other articles.
A second object of the invention is the production of an affixer for adhesive tape which can easily be severed to required lengths and applied to packages, boxes and the like.
A third object of the invention is the production of means to moisten the object to which the stamps, labels or tape are to be affixed in place, and maintaining a roll of stamps, labels or tape therein free from moisture.
A fourth object of the invention the production of an afiixer that is portable, easily manipulated and that can easily be loaded with a roll of the strip of material, that is to be aiiixed to the object for which it is intended.
Other objects will be evident from the following description.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 represents a side elevation of an exemplification of the improved stamp aflixer, in this instance with a strip of postage stamps and envelopes; Fig. 2 shows a top plan view of the affixer; Fig. 3 indicates a section of Fig. 2 on the line 3, 3; and Fig. 4 is a section of Fig. 3 on the line at, 4.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 4: the stamp affixer is shown to comprise a housing with a oylindrical compartment A, a reservoir B and a pocket C. Side walls for the compartment A have formed therewith the extensions 21 for the reservoir B and the pocket 0. Flanges 22 are formed with said extensions.
A cylindrical bottom wall 25 is fastened to the walls 20 and is continued to form the bearing plate 26 with the curved wing 28 having the tip end 29. The flanges 22 Serial No. 552,091.
are fastened to the lower face of the bearing plate 26.
Guide flanges 30 with the flared inlet ends 31 are formed with the bearing plate 26 and form the guide channels 32.
A bottom plate 34 connects the lower edges of the extensions 21, the wall 25 and the plate 26, to form the reservoir B. A plate 35 with the perforations 36 and the rear wall 37 is inserted in the reservoir 13 and forms the pocket C;
A cover I) having the cylindrical wall Al, the opening 42 and the side walls 43 is hinged to wall 25 by means of the hinge re. Looking lugs 45 with projections 46 extend from the walls li-3. The projections A6 are adapted to lock with perforations A8 in the walls 20, when the cover D is looked in the closed position. A pin 50 with the journal ends 51 is supported in open ings 52 and 53 formed respectively in the side walls 20 and 43.
A strip 5% of postage stamps or labels, adhesive tape and the like with an adhesive on one face thereof is wound in a roll 55 around the pin 50, and the latter is then supported in the openings 52 and 53 with one end of the strip 54: extending through the opening 42. The strip 54: is then located upon the bearing plate 26 with the adhesive side of the strip adjacent to said plate 26, and with the outer end of the strip extending slightly beyond the wing 28. Water is poured into the reservoir B through the openings 36 of the plate 35. A moistening pad 56 is located in the pocket C and preferably folded with the fold 57 hearing up against the wing 28.
To use the aflixer it is supported in an inclined position as shown in the drawings, so that the fold 57 of the moistening pad 56, bears upon the face of the envelope 62, or other object on the table 63, to which the strip 54. is to be attached. The fold 57 of the moistening pad is drawn over the surface of the envelopes 62 one after the other and the strip 54 is manually moved down on the bearing plate 26, to bring the stamps one after the other into contact with the envelopes. The stamps are then, one after the other, detached from the strip 54 and fastened to the envelopes.
The water in the reservoir B will flow through the perforations 36 and moisten the pad 56.
The method of applying stamps as de scribed is applicable to label or adhesive tape that may be fastened to packages, boxes and other objects.
It is to be understood that various modifications may be made in the invention, and that the present exemplifications are only to be taken as illustrative and not limitative thereof.
Having described our invention What We desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim is: v
1. In an afiixer of the character described the combination of a compartment, a cover having an opening in one of its Walls hinged to a Wall of the compartment, a pin for the roll of a strip of material ournaled in the side Walls of the compartment and cover, a guide plate extending from the compartment, guide flanges over the guide plate, a reservoir for a fluid below the guide plate and outside of the said compartment, and a pocket extending into the reservoir, said pocket having openings leading into the reservoir and a moistening pad detachably supported in the pocket.
2. In an aflixer of the character described the combination of a compartment, a cover having an opening in one of its Walls hinged to a Wall of the compartment, a pin for the roll of a strip of material journaled in the side Walls of the compartment and cover, a guide plate having a curved Wing at its outer end extending from the compartment, guide flanges over the guide plate for the strip of material, a reservoir for a fluid below the guide plate and outside of the said compartment, a plate with perforations and having a rear Wall inserted in said reservoir constituting a pocket and a moistening pad in said pocket.
Signed at the borough of Manhatten, city of New York in the county of New York and State of New York this 28th day of March A. D. 1922.
