Application filedlebruary 24, 1925. Serial No. 1 1,078.
ToaZZ 107mm it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, ALBERT'T. VVALRAVEN, citizen of the United States of America, rcsiding at Dallas, in the county of Dallasand State of'TeXas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'in Book Covers, of which the following i's'a specification.
This invention relatesto new and useful improvements in book covers;
The object of the invention is to provide acover which may be made of heavy paper or other -material suitable for the purpose and which may be applied to the book in a simple and effective manner. v
Another object is to provide a cover formed from a rectangular sheet and arranged to be folded over the edges of the book cover boards and secured, without cutting or performing difficult operations.
A further object is to provide a cover wherein the folded flaps completely cover and reinforce the corners of the book cover boards.
A construction designed to carry out the invention will be hereinafter described together with other features of the invention.
The invention will be more readily understood from a reading of the following specification and by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which an example of the invention is shown, and wherein:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the cover showing in dotted lines the book laid thereon and the cover boards spread for applying the cover,
Fig. 2 is a detail showing one of the corners of the cover sheet folded over the corner of the cover boards and the back tab cut and folded down,
Fig. 3 is a detail of one of the end flaps folded down, and.
Fig. A is a detail showing one corner of the complete cover applied to the book.
In the drawings the numeral 10 designates a rectangular sheet of paper or other material suitable for the purpose. At the center the sheet is formed with diverging guide lines 11 which are cutto form the back tabs 12, common in this art; it being understood that as many lines may be provided as is desired and the manner of for1n ing these tabs is optional.
The sheet is somewhat larger than the book so as to extend beyond the edges of the cover boards A when the latter are spread out to apply the cover thereto. In
applying the cover the tabs 12 are formed asby cutting along the lines 11* and folding the tab underthe backB of the book.
The next step istofold thecorn'ers ofi'he' cover sheetover onto thecover boardson a lineat about 41 5 degrees to the edges, thus foinning a'tab 13. Guide lines 1t"1naybe printed or formed on the sheet, as in Fig. 1, or thefold may be made without them, as a slight variation in the fo'ld will not defeat the" operation. Whenthe tabz is folded over and-down upon the cover 'boardA it'will be seen that the corner as well as both sides of the cover board are covered. Mucilage, glue or other adhesive is applied to the upper side of the tab 13.
This position is shown in Fig. 2. The next step is to fold the end flaps of the cover. The end flaps 15 are those portions at the short edges of the cover boards correspond ing to the top and bottom of the pages. .The adhesive surface of the tab 13 may be moistened so that when the flap 15 is folded down it may be secured. In order to make this 3 fold it is merely necessary to crease the sheet along the edge of the cover board A and fold the flap over onto the inner side of said board as is shown in Fig. 3.
The next step is to crease the cover sheet along the side edges of the cover boards and form the flaps 16 which are folded over onto the cover boards as is shown in Fig. 4. It will be seen that in making the folds shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the tab 13 is folded upon itself and thus the flaps 15 and 16 are folded down upon said tab and secured thereto. It is obvious that the manner of applying the glue may vary and may be done when the cover is applied to the book or glued portions may be provided when the sheet is manufactured and these portions moistened when the cover is applied.
The cover when applied, provides a very substantial book corner because the corner of the cover board is completely covered and two thicknesses of the cover sheet are provided along the edges contiguous to the corner. A cover of this character is easily puton by children owing to its simplicity and is particularly adapted to school. 7
Various changes in the size and shape of the different parts, as well as modifications and alterations may be made Within the scope of the appended claims.
VVhatI claim is:
1. A book cover comprising a rectangular sheet folded diagonally across its corners to form a tab, the ends of the sheet being folded on a line passing through the tab to form end flaps, and the sides of the sheet being folded on lines passing through the tabs to form side flaps, the end and side flaps being folded down upon the tab and secured thereto.
2. A book cover comprising a rectangular sheet folded across its corners and then folded along lines at right angles to each other intersecting and terminating at the lines of the corner folds, the folded portions being gluedupon each other. 7
3. A book cover comprising in combination with the cover boards of a book, a sheet having its corners folded over onto the boards at an angle to the edges thereof and its sides and endsalso folded over onto the .boards along lines parallel to the edges of said boards, the, folded ends, and sides being secured to the corner folds and the corner folds overlying the inner sides of the boards.
4. Abook cover comprising a sheet having its corners folded inwardly and again folded upon themselves at right angles and forming parts of end and side flaps folded along the sides and ends of the sheet.
5. A book cover comprising a sheet having itscorners folded inwardly and the upper surfaces of said corner folds having a coating of adhesive, the ends and sides of the sheet being folded inwardly on lines running through the corner folds, whereby said corner folds are folded upon themselves and their adhesive faces are brought into contact.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ALBERT T. WALRAVEN.
