UNITED STATES LOUIS J'. SHRAMEK,
1,541,002 PATENT OFFICE.
OF NEW YORK, N.- Y.
FOLDABLE FORM.
Application filed February 15, A1'.-)$?3. Serial No. 619,328.
` vices of that character carrying phonograph records.
The object of `m invention is a device made of cardboar or similar material, and carrying a phonographic record, the device being so constructed and arranged that it may be folded for mailing purposes with full protection to the record and which is capable of placement upony the record table of a phonograph for reproduction purposes.
The device of my invention is so constructed that it may carry printed matter, as well as a phonograph record, hidden from view when the device is in folded form for mailing purposes and visible only when the device is unfolded.
My device is suitable, therefore, not only for sentimental purposes, but has large utilitarian attributes, as it is eminently suitable for the carrying of advertisements, which are composed not only of the ordinary printed matter, but which include a` phonograph record of the devices advertised with their usefulness and value capable of reproduction into a verbal description.
The value of this means of presentation will be evident upon a consideration of the interest excited in an unknown phonographic record with the natural result of a determination of its contents by actual reproduction u on a phonograph.
A device of t is character must be of such construction as to amply protect the record during transit and be capable of placement upon a phonograph table, all of which properties are possessed by the device of my invention.
In the particular form of the device of my invention, shown in the accompan ing drawings, similar parts are designat by similar numerals.
Fi ure 1 is a front view of one form of my evice in folded form for mailing pur.. poses.
Figure 2 is a rear view of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the inner face of Figure 1 in an unfolded position.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the device folded for phonographic reproduction purposes. y
Figure 5 is a section through the line of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a section through the line 6-6 of Figure 2. l
The particular form vof the device of my invention, shown in the accompanying drawings, comprises a cardboard member 10 scored along the lines A--A and B--B,
vthus forming the three device elements 11,
12 and 13. The element 13 has the extended necked member 14.
The element 11 carries a flexible metallic member 15, which is capable of being bent over the neck of the member 14, when the device is folded along the line A-A, as shown in Figure 2.
Fixedly attached to the one face of the element 13 is a phonographic disc 16, the central opening 17 of the disc being in alignment with a similar opening 18 in the -element 13. I
While I do not limit myself to any particular wording, or emblems, upon my device. I illustrate it as having the usual post card design upon one face of the element 11, as shown in Figure 1, and as having appropriate greetings upon one face of the element 11 and reference to the phonographic record upon one face of the element 13, as shown in Figure 3. Directions for folding the device for purposes of phonographic reproduction are given upon one face of the element 12, as shown in Figure 2.
If the element 11 is of post card size, the device, when completely unfolded, will be too long for use upon the ordinary phonograph, as it will abut against the sound arm during revolution of the platform and, for that reason, I introduce the two foldable lines A--A and B-B, so that, when folded as indicated `in Figure 5, it can be employed upon the usual phonogra h.
When the device is olded and locked, as shown in Figures 1 and 2, it may be used as a post card, the record 16 being Within the folded device and the stamp being affixed over the portion removed from the record, thus preventing its breakagedue to cancellation of the stamp.
When the device is used upon the phonograph, the element, 12 is folded under the element 13 along the line B-B and the element 11 is folded outwardly along the line A-A, as shown in Figure 5 and in the illustration of Figure 2. It is then placed upon the revoluble phonograph table 19, the pin 20 of which passes through the two openings 17 and 18.
My device has great value and interest for advertising purposes, as the record may contain phonographic impressions of a description of the articles advertised, the device being capable of safe transportation through the mail at minimum rates of postage, While, at the same time, the device will excite the curiosity of the recipient and cause him to use the record upon a phonograph, in order to determine what it contains.
I do not limit myself to the particular size, shape, number or arrangements of parts, nor to the particular printed matter thereon, as shown and described, as these are given simply as a means for the clear d scription of the device of my invention.
e`What I claim is 1. In a foldable phonographic record carrying device, in combination, a foldable blank, a phonographic record fixedly attached to one face of the blank, a plurality of score lines upon the blank allowing of the folding of the thus formed elements upon each other producing a folded form less in length than the length of the unfolded blank with the record outwardly exn posed. and means for releasably locking the device when in folded form with the record concealed.
2. In a foldable phonographic record carrying device, in combination, a foldable blank, a phonographic record fixedly attached to one face of the blank, a score line upon 'the blank allowing of the folding of the blank with the record concealed, a score line upon the blank allowing of the folding ofthe blank with the record exposed, an opening through the record and the blank to allow of the positioning of a phonograph pin therethrough and means for releasably locking the blank when folded with tlie record concealed.
3. In a foldable phonographic record carrying device, in combination, a foldable blank, a phonographic record fixedly attached to one face of the blank, a score line upon the blank allowing of the folding of the blank with the record concealed, a score line upon `the blank allowing of the folding of the blank with the record exposed, an opening through the record and the blank to allow of the positioning ofl a phonograph pin therethrough, when the blank is folded with the record exposed, an extended member carried by one end portion of the blank and means carried by the other end portion of the blank to engage the extended portion to produce a locking means when the blank is folded with the record concealed.
Signed at New. York city in the county of New York and State of New York this 12th day of February, 1923.
