HEAD SUPPORT FOR .RADIORECEIVERS AND THE LIKE.
Application filed m 18;
the like, wherehy the latter may he sup-.
ported in proper relation 'to the ears of the person receiving a n'iessage.
ln devices of this kind, which are used by a numher oi different persons, it is n ressary very frequently to adjust the tension of the head hand or the angular relation oil the stcn'is which support the receivers in order that the device may fit the head ot the individual using the same without causing discomfort to the user, and while at the same time preserving the proper position of the receivers with relation'to the ears.
The ohject oi the present invention is to provide a device for effecting this adjustment, which may he readily applied to-a head support of the usual type, without modifying the construction thereof, and may he quickly adjusted to hold the receivers in any position desired.
The present invention is related to my ap plication, Serial No. 679,370, filed December 8, 1923, in which are presented claims generic to the structure shown in this application.
The principles of the invention and the structural details oi? the same will he best understood. from the detailed description which follows, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing: 7
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a head support, having my invention attached thereto.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same.
Figure 3 is a sectional detailed view of the means by which the invention is secured on the stem which supports the receiver.
Figure 4 is a detailed perspective view of a washer forming part of the invention.
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing a modified form of the invention.
The head support to which my invention is applied comprises the usual head band 5, to the ends of which are secured collars 6 in which stems 7 are mounted for vertical ad- 1923. Serial No. 839,871.
justment. Each of the collars 6 has an upwardly extending split portion 8, which is externally threaded to receive a thumh nut 9 for the purpose of: securing the stem '7 in its position of adjustment. Each stein carries a yoke 10 at its lower end in which a receiver 11 is pivotally supported, and at its upper end the'stem is provided with removable knob 12 for preventing the stem from slipping entirely out of the collar 6.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Figures 1 to i, awasher 13 is seated on the collar 6 at the base of the split portion 8, and is provided on one side with a downwardly turned lip 14L adapted to extend hetween. the two members oi. the head hand and on. its opposite side is formed with projecting lugs forming hetween them a slot 16. it necessary, a spacing washer 17 may he inserted hetween the washer 13 and thumb nut 9 for hol fling the former against its seat on the collar 6, with the lip let held hetween the branches of the hand 5 to prevent the washer 13 from turning when the nut 5.) is adjusted.
A pair of: lovers 18 are fulcrumed in the slots 16, and are each provided with an eye 19 at one end to receive the stem '7, while the upper ends are bent toward each other as at 20, terminating in opposite threaded extremities 21 which are adjustable toward and, from each other by means of a turnbuckle 22 having a knurled portion 23, by means of which it may be conveniently adjusted.
It will he understood that the knob 12 and nut 9 may he removed, thus permitting the stem 7 to he detached from the collar ti so that the attachment which constitutes the invention may be readily assembled thereon.
In the operation or my invention, when the support is attached to the persons head, by turning the turnbuckle-22 in one direction or the other, the levers 18 and stems 7 are caused torock, moving the receivers 11 toward and away from the ears of the user. The levers 18, as well as the terminal portions of the head hand 5, are sui'liciently resilient to permit this adjustment, which varies the angular relation between the stems 7 supporting the receivers, and consequently varies the pressure which is exerted against the ears.
A similar result may he effected by the construction shown in Figure 5. In this form of the invention, a pair of rods 2a are eachi'ormed at one end with an eye 25 adapt ed to be secured underneath the knob 12, and the inner ends of the rods 2st are connected by a turnbuckle 2G in the same manner as the opposed ends 20 of the levers 18 are connected. The operation is similar to the first described construction, but in etl ecting the adjustment in this case, the stems 7 act as levers while the collars act as tulcrums and the extremities of the head band are flexed in similar manner.
The invention is especially valuable with reference to radio receivers for reason that the latter are frequently used by a great many ditlerent persons, necessitating frequent adjustment in order to secure the best results without unnecessary inconvenience to the user. l-leretofore when the adjustment of the tension between the receivers was affected by bending the head band 5, it frequently resulted in such misshapement of the latter that the receivers were no longer held in proper position to obtain the best results. With the present invention, however, any desired adjustment may be quickly effected without bending any of the parts beyond their elastic limit, and consequently without in any way adversely ailecting the elliciency of the instrument.
lVhile I have shown and described the specilic details of two forms in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that these are merely illustrative, and that various other modifications may be made therein as long as such modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as defined in the claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A head support of the character described comprising a head band terminating in collars in which stems are mounted for supporting the receivers, levers intermediately supported adjacent. said collars and connected with the stems, and means connecting said levers and adjustable to rock them simultaneously in opposite directions to vary the distance between the receivers.
2. A head support of the character described comprising a. head hand terminating in collars in which stems are mounted for supporting the receivers, levers intermediately fulcrumed adjacent said collars and having eyes at one end receiving the respective stems, means connecting the opposite ends of the levers and adjustable in length to move the lovers in opposite directions to vary the distance between the receivers.
3. An attachment for a head support having a band with stems secured in its extremities for supporting the receivers, comprising a pair of :t'ulcrums provided with means for attaching the same to the stems, levers fulcrumed on said members, and means connecting corresponding ends of said levers, and adjustable to move the same toward and away from each other and thereby to vary the distance between the receivers.
4. An attachment for a head support having a band with stems secured in its extremities for supporting the receivers, comprising a pair of fulcrum members adapted to be secured to the extremities of the band, levers fulcrumed on said members and provided with means for connecting the same to the stems, and means connecting the corresponding ends of the levers and adjustable in length to move the levers bodily in opposite directions for adjusting the distance between the receivers.
5. An attachment for a head support having a band with stems secured in its ext-remities for supporting the receivers, comprising a pair of fulcrum members adapted to be secured to the extremities of the band, levers tulcrumed on said members and provided with eyes for receiving the stems, and means for adjusting the distance between corresponding ends of the levers to move the same bodily with their tulcrums toward or away from. each other and thereby vary the distance between the stems without changing the angularrelation of the stems to each other.
6. An attachment for a head support having a band with stems secured in its extremities for supporting the receivers, comprising a pair of fulcrum members adapted to be secured on the stems, levers fulcrumed on said members and provided at one end with eyes for receiving the stems, the other ends of the levers being bent toward and into alinement with each other, anda turn buckle connecting the alined ends and operable to move the lovers bodily toward. and from each other and thereby adjust the angular relation of the stems to each other.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aliixed my signature.
