Application led Tune 15, 1923. Serial No. 645,637.
T 0 all whom t may concern.'
lle it linown that l, llhin'ron D. Milam, a citizen of the United States, residing at El Paso, in the county oi El Paso and State of rllenas, have invented a new and usetul Mattress, oiE which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to mattresses for beds, cots and the like.
rl'he object et the invention is to provide a mattress so constructed that a person may sleep on his stomach or side and be conipletely covered up and yet have ample 'fresh air provided for breathing avoiding any t\,visting of the head and rendering the bed much more comfortable.
Another object of the invention is to provide an adjustable headrest for mattress equipped with breathing openings.'
Another object is to provide a mattress having toe receiving openings, the location of which may be varied to suit persons of different lengths.
lith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement o'l1 parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
ln the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a mattress embodying one 'form of this invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view showing a double bed mattress of this character.
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view showing one form ot' breathing opening.
Fig. 4f is a similar view showing another form.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a mattress showing a slightly ditl'erent 'jorm olf the invention with the toot receiving apertures arranged for a short person.
Fig. 6 is a similar view with the pillow section .omitted and the foot section arranged for tall persons, and
Fig. 7 is a similar view with an adjustable head1-est and the loot sections arranged t0 accommodate an extremely tall person.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. l and 2, a double bed mattress 1 is shown having a hingedly connected adjustable head support or pillow 2 at one end and a plurality of longitudinally adjustable transversely extending foot sections 3 any desired number oi vhich may be employed, three being here shown which are mounted on aA pad a formed at the t'oot of the mattress and which are designed to prevent the toes of the sleeper from contact with the bed spring.
The foot sections 3 are of a width sutilcient to leave a space 5 when adjusted to receive the toes of the sleeper when resting on his stomach and these sections may move longitudinally on the pad 4 so that the space 5 may be formed either between the section or between the inner section and the `loot of the mattress proper to accommodate persons of different heights.
A removable section G is shown midway the length oi' the mattress and is curved at its opposite ends so that when removed, the space left will comfortably receive the abdomen of stout people. A similar section 7 is arranged at the upper end of and is designed to be removed when the bed is to be used by a woman having a large bust so that she may comfortably lie on her tace, the bust being received in the recess Jformed by the removal of section 7.
The headrest or pillow 2 is provided with an opening 8 which extends through the pillow from the top to the bottom, being preierably arranged at an oblique angle as shown in Fig. 2, the bottom o1n4 which is larger than the top, so that a person lying on his stomach may have his face positionec over this opening Alor breathing purposes. The double bed mattress shown in Fig. 2 et course, is designed to accommodate two people and the various parts are duplicated but obviously it may be made in a single bed form.
ln Figs. 3 and l, the breathing openings are shown of slightly different form the opening S1` of Fig. 3 being truncated coneshaped flaring toward its lower end while in Fig. 4 the upper portion of the opening is flared as shown at 8b and the lower portion 8c corresponds in shape to the opening shown in Fig. 3.
In Fig. 5, the headrest 2 is shown detachable from the body of the mattress and is equipped with the breathing opening 8 similar to those in the headrest shown in the other ligures. ln this form of the invention, the foot sections 3 are so adjusted that section 6 n lli) the space 5 is formed between the inner section 3 and the central section to accommodate a slightly taller person than the one ior which the mattress shown in Figs. l and 2 is designed.
In Fig. 6, the mattress la is exactly like that shown in Fig. 5 except that the headrest 2 is dispensed with, the upper end of the n a-ttress being apertured as shown at 8a to receive the tace of the user to permit comlortalbie breathing;` while the sections 3 at the toot are changes to accommodate a taller person.
In Fig. 7, the headrest 2 is similar to that shown in Fig. l except that the shape ot' the breathing opening is varied and the foot sections 8 are arranged at the extreme inward limit to accommodate an extremely tall person.
From the above description it will be obvious that the mattress constructed as herein shown and described may be used either as an ordinary mattress when the sections are in place or the sections may be removed to accommodate stout persons in the manner above set forth.
Various changes in the forni, shape, proportion and other minor details of construction may be` made without departing from the spirit or sacrilicing any of the advantages of the claimed invention.
I claim 1. A mattress having a` breathing opening extending through the upper portion thereof, the lower portion of the mattress being equipped with a .plurality of longitudinally adjustable sections to provide a` foot receive ing opening, said sections being slidable to vary the position of said opening.
2. A mattress having a breathing opening extending through the upper portion thereof, the lower portion ol the mattress being` equipped with aplurality of longitudinally adjustable sections to provide afoot receiving opening, said sections slidable to vary the position of the opening, said 1nattress having a pad extending under said i sections to protect thetoes of the user against contact with the bed spring.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto atfixed my signa i ture in the presence of two witnesses.
