Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER B. WALKER, OF CHEROKEE STATION, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT'TO T. D. BROWN, OF NORTH LAWRENCE, KANSAS.
`IMPROVEMENT IN SPINNING-WHEELS.
Specification forming part of letters Patent No. 154,969, dated September 15, 1874; application led Y March 10, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W. B. WALKER, of Cherokee Station, in the county of Crawford and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spinning-Frames and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specilication.
My invention relates to improvements in spinning-frames, the object of which is to provide a simple and effective apparatus for the purpose of releasing the spindle when it is desired to cross the driving-band for twisting; and 4it consists of the combination, with the spindle-rest, of a sliding bearing-box, constructed and operating as hereinafter described.
A represents the frame of the machine; B, the driving-wheel, which communicates motion to the multiplying-hub C of the wheel D, having an adiustable support in the upper end of the post E working on a pivot on the end of the girt F. G represents a band working in a groove in the wheel B, and extending to and working in a groove in the hub C, a lighter band running in a groove in the wheel D, and
y passing around the whirl on the spindle and extending to and working in a groove in a wheel on the post opposite the driving-wheel B. H represents a contracting and expanding Y frame, composed of two series of toggle-arms joined together by toggle-joints, the two series riveted together and operated by a swinging lever, I, which derives its motion from foottreadle J, rocking over the foot of the post on which the driving-wheel B is supported.
The support of the wheel Din the upper end of the post E working on a pivot below, is for the purpose of tightening or loosening the bands at pleasure.
The said frame H is connected at one end of the frame of the machine. On lthe other end is a spool to carry it back and forth on the frame ofthe machine. At this end of the frame the spindle-rest K is fastened. This rest is formed with a sliding box, L, held in position by a pin, a.
When it is desired to change the direction of the band on the whirl, this can be easily done by simplyT withdrawing the pin a and sliding the box L along the spindle to the whirl. The spindle may `then be tipped slightly in its front bearing, so that the drivingband may be easily passed over its rear end, and returned again to the whirl and crossed in the opposite direction. The box may then be returned to place again.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the spindle and its rest K, of the box L, capable of sliding toward the spindle-whirl, and held in position by the pin a., all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
W. B. WALKER.
