W. BRODY HYPODERMIC SYRINGE Filed May 1. 1924 l anc: su;
Patented @et 27, 1925.
UNITED STATES WILLnr/rnnonr, or nnw vonk, N. Y.
HYODERMIC SYRINGE.
Application filed May 1,
To alZ whom t may concern Be it known that I, WILL-IAM Buoni', a citi zen of the United States of America, residing at New York, in the county of flew York and State olf New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hypodermic Syringes, of which'the iollowing is a specification. l
My invention relates to improvements in hypoderinic syringes.
Heretofore it has been customary to utiliZe a washer between the shank of the needle and the syringe, to prevent leakage. These washers are very unsanitary and require replacing very frequently. The object of my invention is to dispense with all washers, and yet obtain a leakproof joint between the needle and the syringe.
Another' object of my invention is to provide a device of this character which can be applied to any form of needle now in use without any alterations or changes oi' construction. Y
Another object of my invention is the provision of a device of the above mentioned character which will be easily and cheaply manufactured, but which will be strong and durable.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification and wherein like numerals designate like or corresponding parts throughout the same;
4Figure 1 is a side elevation of a syringe provided with my invention, the needle being shown in dotted lines,
Figure 2 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional View of the shank of the needle, and the adjacent portion of the syrngea Figure 3 is a similar View with the entire syringe shown in side elevation,
Figure i is a fragmentary side elevation, parts being shown in section, of a modified form of my device, and
Figure 5 is a detail view of the same.
In the drawingsl wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred form of my invention, the numeral 10 designates the usual syringe having the screw threaded nipple 11 at its end. The nipple 11 is adapted to be received within the partially yscrew threaded opening 12 in the shank 13 of the 1924. sei-iai no. 710,378.
usual needle. The nipple 11 is provided with a reduced extension "ist which has its end rounded at 15. rIhe longitudinal port or passageway 1G extends through the nipple and the reduced extension and communicates with the interior oi the syringe.
' When the shank 13 oi' the needle is screwed onto the nipple 11, the reduced extension 14 will project into the opening 12. rlChe reduced extension is smaller in diameter than the opening and will be arranged concentii cally therewithin. rIhe longitudinal port 17 connects `the opening 12 with the needle 18 and the usual rounded or curved shoulder 19 connects the Vwalls ot the opening 12 and the passage 1T. is the shank is tightened on the nipple, the rounded end 15 of the extension 111 contacts with the rounded or curved shoulder 19 of the shank. Thiscontact is at a single line about the curved cnd of the reduced extension, and whenpressure is applied, a leakproof joint will be obtained between the nipple and the needle sh ank, due to the small area of contactbetween the reduced extension and the curved shoulder 19. Because `of the rounded end 15, the nipple will'iit any hypodermic needle now on the market, as a different size or shape of needle will merely shift the point of contact on the rounded end 15 of the nipple.
In the form described, the nipple is made as an integral part of the syringe, but in Figures et and 5 a device is shown which is adapted to be attached to a syringe of the usual construction now in use. In this form of the invention, the nipple 11 is carried by the enlarged portion 20 which has a screw threaded opening 21 adapted to receive the usual nipple 22 on the syringe. This connection should bevery tight, and may even be soldered, as the needle is detachable from the nipple 16. In this form the needle 18 is attached to the nipple 16 in place of the nipple 22, and the operation is the same as in the other form.
It will therefore be seen that I have provided a device which will dispense with all washers, and insure a leakproof joint, and which can be formed integrally or be madeto fit any existing syringe.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the sub-- joined claims,
Having described my invention, What .l
claim and desire to protect by Letters Paten i1 is:
l. The combination with` a hypodermic syringe having` a nipple adapted to receive the shank of a needle, of a rounded end on said nipple adapted to contact with said shank oi the needle, at a single line about its suriiace, to insure a leakproof joint.
2. The combination With a syringe having; a nipple, oi' a needle shank l'iaving an open ing to receive said nipple, said opening,l ha v ing a curved shoulder, and a. rounded end on said nipple adapted to contact with the curved shoulder at a single line about iis surface to insure a leakprool joint.
3. rlhe combination ivth a. syringe having a nipple, of a needle shank having an oper ing to receive the nipple, said nipple hav ing a rounded end and said openinghaving an oppositely curved shoulder adapted to contact With the rounded end of the nipple.
4. rlhe combination with a hypodermic syringe havinga nipple, oli' a needle shank haa/ingan opening' to receive said nipple, a reduced extension carried by said nipple, and having a rounded end, said opening having` an oppositely curved shoulder adapted to contact with the rounded end of the reduced extension.
The combination with a hypodermie syringe having` a screw threaded nipple7 of a needle shank having` a scren7 threaded openA` ing` to receive said nipple, a reduced extern sion carried by said nipple and having a rounded end, said nipple and extension hay# ing a port communicating with the interior of the syringe and adapted to register with a corresponding port in the needle shank which communicates With the needle, and a conveXly curved shoulder in the opening in the shank7 adapted to contact with the rounded end of the reduced extension.
6. The combination with a hypodermic syringe having a nipple, of an attachment therefor comprising,- a body portion having an opening` adapted to receive the nipple on the syringe, a nipple carried by said body portion. a reduced extension having' :i rounded end7 said attachment having a Qassageway communicating with the interior of the syringe, and a needle carrying shank having` an opening to receive the last named nipple, and having' a convexly curved shoulder adapted to contact with the rounded end of the reduced extension.
7. The combination with a hypodermic syringe having a. nipple, of a needle shank having` an opening to receive said nipplel` and a reduced extension carried by said nipple, said reduced extension being adapted. to contact with the interior of the opening in the needle shank at a single line about its surface.
S. The combination with a hypodermic syringe having a nipple, of a needle shank having an opening' to receive said nipple, said nipple beingadapted to contact with the interior of the opening' in the needle shank, at a single line about its surface.
In testimony whereof I aiiin my signature.
WILLIAM BRODY.'
