Be it known that I, THOMAS F. VALEN- TINE, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Catawba, county of Marion, and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gauges, of which the following is a full and'clear specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple tool of the gauge or square type especially for carpenters use, the con struction being such as to enable the carpenter to accurately fit pieces of timber or board into positions in which the. ends or edges have irregular or unlike inclinations, as more fully hereinafter set forth.

The outer ends of the straight-edges are connected by another extensible member consisting of a tube 15 and arod 16, the tube and the rod being respectively pivotally connected to the straight-edges, and a set-screw. 17 being employed to lock the two telescoping members in their adjusted positions. the straight-edges, a set-screw 20 being employed to lock the parts in their adjusted positlon.
l/Vith theconstruction above described, it will be observed that by loosening the setscrews, the straight-edges may be adjusted to any angle with respect to each other and also with, respect to the base-member and that this adjusted relationship may be maintained by tightening the set-screws, especially set-screw 20. The intermediate extensible member is especially important in that it locks the straight-edgesagainst pivotal movement after the set-screw 20 is set up tight. Without this locking member, it will be observed that the two straight-edges would be free to swing with reference to the base-member, even tho the set- screws 13 and 17 be tightened. It is important also that the locking member shall extend diagonally between the 'two straight-edges, as
otherwise this locking member would partake of the parallel movement that occurs between the base-member and the outer connecting member when the straight-edges are swung in either direction together. I prefer providing the rod 12 with an additional abutment 21 Whose inner face 22 is parallel with the inner face of the abutment 14, so as to lie fiat against the edge of the timber; this. additional or supplemental abutment is promotive of accuracy especially when the telescoping members are extended to a considerable degree.
As" shown, the rods 12, 16 and 19 may be marked with if desired.
What I claim as new is:
1. Ina device of the class set forth, a longitudinally-extensible base-member having a straight-edge face adapted for abutment against the edge of the board, a pair of straight-edges pivotally connected to the opposite ends of said extensible base-member, an extensible connecting member pivotally connecting the outer ends of said graduations indicating inches,
straight-edges, and a diagonal longitudinally-extensible locking member connecting the, two straight-edges at points intermediate the other pivotal connections therewith, locking means being provided for each one of said extensible members.
2. In a device of the class set 'forth, a longitudinally-extensible base-member having a straight-edge face adapted for abutment against the edge of the board, a pair of straight-edges pivotally connected to the opposite ends of said extensible base-member, an extensible connecting member pivotally connecting; the outer ends of said straight-edges, and a diagonal longitudinally-extensible locking member connecting the two straight edges at points intermediate the other pivotal connections therewith,
locking means being provided for each one of said extensible members, said straight- 10 edge face being provided with two parts,
one being carried byweach of the two telescopic members composing the base-member. In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
