SURFACE-ROLLING DEVICE.

Devices, of which the following is a specifi` cation.
This invention relates to improvements in surface rolling devices and has particular reference to a machine for packing and vcompressing the earth preliminary to the covering of the same with a surfacing material,` or for actually compressing the asphaltic material itself. n
Objects of this invention are to provide mechanical means whereby ditches of various widths may be properly rolled so as to compact the bottom and side walls thereof; to produce a machine which may be accommodated to various widths and depths of ditches with a minimum amount of effort; and to provide a device which may travel along the ditch and be loperated entirely from one side thereof without the necessity of an anchor on the opposite side of the ditch.
A further object is to produce a machine of this character which is simple in conf struction, easy to manipulate, strong, durable and highly eiioient in use.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course ofthe following description. l l

In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the
numeral 5 designates the bottoml of a ditch and the numerals 6 and 7 the side walls thereof, while the numeral 8 represents the ground level upon which my device travels.A
At 9, I have shown a platform preferably mounted upon movable tracks 11 and 12, which tracks are of the customary construction and operate through the medium of an engine 13, which drives a shaft 14 and has a bevel gear 16 mounted thereon. This bevel gear meshes with spur gears 17 and 18 freely rotatable upon a cross shaft 19, which shaft is vjournaled at 21 and 22 to the platform 9.
It will'be'noted that this shaft 19 has slidably keyed thereto clutches 23 and 24 which areV connected by a yoke 26, which yoke is movable through the medium of a lever 27. These clutches are adapted to be alternately brought into engagement with the gears 17 and 18 for the purpose of transmitting forward or backward motion to the shaft 19, which motion is transmitted through chains 28 and 29 to the tracks 11 and 12.
The numeral 31 designates a gear keyed to the shaft 14, which gear meshes with a second gear 32 secured to a shaft 33. This shaft is mounted in bearings 34 and 36 and carries at its opposite end a freely rotatable bevel gear 37. The shaft 33 has also keyed thereto a sliding clutch 38, while a -gear 39 meshing with the gear 37 is journaled as shown at 41. This gear 39 meshes with a gear 42 keyed vto a shaft 40, which shaft carries a gear 46 keyed thereto and journaled as shown at 47' and 48. Mounted on this rshaft 40 is a tubular sleeve 43 upon lvvhich is slidably keyed a gear 44. The sleeve 43 is reciprocated by a lever 50 which causes the end of the sleeve to engage the gear 42, the gear and sleeve being formed so as to act as a clutch when brought together. j
The gears 44 and 46 mesh with gears 49 and 51 mounted upon a shaft 52 upon which v drums 53 and 54 are secured. These drums are provided with flanges which serve to limit the travel of the rope 56 during its winding and unwinding action;
It will be noted by Vviewing Figure 6 that one end of the rope 56 is wound about the .drum 54 from the top, while the oppo site end of the rope is `wound about the drum 53 from .tll',bottom. This ropeextends over a pulley 57 carried upon the end ofl a telescoping boom 58 pivoted at 59 to the platform 9.
A pin 60 is placed in suitable perforations in the boom. 58 to prevent the boom telescoping further than desired. This pin permits the adjustment of theV amount ofi expansion of the boom to suit the requirements of the Work.
This boom 58 is supported by a mast 6l through the medium of cables GQ. It isA of course understood that the mast 6.1 has conventional guy ropes aswell as the boom 58, which guy ropes prevent undesired side motion. By adjusting` the boom guys it is possible to swing the boom around the machine as shown in dotted lines in Figure 6.
rIvhe rope 56 has secured thereto rollers 63 and G4 which are mounted between a plurality of frames designated at 66, GT, 6.8 and G9. The frames 66 and G9. are pivoted to the axles of the rollers and are secured to the rope 5G, as before mentioned, While the frames G7' and 68 are pivoted to the axles of the rollers and to each other thus making a flexible connection between the rollers and the rope.
The usual fire pan 7l' is mounted Within the rollers. In Figure 3 have shown the telescoping action of the boom. rlhis telescoping actionis Well knownand needs no further comment.
The operation of my device is as follows :ef-
Assuming that the parts` are arranged, as shown in Figures l and (l, the tracks ll and l2 are caused to propel the device as a Whole to a suitable point adjacentthe ditch, after which the rollers G3 and 64; are moved over the surface of. the ditch as shown in Figure l by causing the rope to be. first operated in one .direction and then inthe opposite direction. This action is accomplished through the medium of the motor 13 transmitting power to the drums 53 and 54 through the gears 3l` and 3Q, shaft 33, gears 37, 39 and lf2 thence to sleeve e3 andshaft 40 and by gears all, and e@ to gears i9 and 5l, thence by shaft to the drums 53 and The direction of travel of these drums is controlled by the clutch 38 in the Well known manner.v A
It iS therefore obvious that the rope will be. unwouvnd' from one drum and around the other drum thus pulling the roller first in one direction and then in the opposite direction by merely throwing the clutch 38 first into engagement with the 3T andthen into engagement rvith the gear 42. After a; sectiony has been rolled the device as a Whole Will be moved along the ditch andi a new section rolled.
By releasing the sleeve 43 from its engagement With the gear l2 any slack in the rope may be taken up or eXtra rope may be let out to allow for the lengthening of the boom.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred e2;- ample ofV the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangen ment of parts may be resorted to VWithout departing froml the spirit 'of the invention or the scope of the .subjoined claims.
Having thus describedv myV invention, l claimi l. ln a device ofthe character described, a movable platform, means for supporting said platform, a boom carried by said plat.- form, a rope reaved over apulley secured to the free end of said boom, a plurality of rollers attached to said rope, and means mounted on said platform for moving said rollers over the ,surface of a ditch by alternately reciprocating said rope.

In a device of the character described, a platform, means forV movably supporting said platform adjacent a ditch, a telescopic boom pivoted to said platform, a mast securedto said platform and adapted to support said boom in a substantially horizontal position, a pulley secured tothe free end of said boom, a rope reaved over said pulley, a plurality of rollers Vcapable of being moved by said rope7 a plurality of frames secured to said rollers and to said rope, means mounted on said platform for reciprocating said rope for the purpose of causing said rollers to be moved back and forth overthe surface of'said ditch.
3. A surface rolling machine comprising a vehicle, a boom carried thereby, a compressing element connected to said boom and vehicle, means operative from the vehicle for actuating the compressing element, and a source of poiver embodied in the vehicleV for actuatingthe said means.
