WASIi-IERLESS REMOVABLE-TIF HYPQDERMIC SYRINGE.
,l Application filed April 4, 1925. Serial No. 20,631.
T 0 all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that we, FRANK L. PLATT, GEORGE il. HEIN, and ROBERT R. IMrnY, cit izens of the United States, residing at the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful improvements in lvasherless Removable-Tip Hypodermic Syringes, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an improvement in our Patent No. 1,508,936 for washerless remo-vable tip hypodermic syr inge, issued September 16th, 1924, to us.
n our previous patent, the discharge end of the tip is formed with a conical recess, the free `end of the needle base being of conical formation. This construction is eX pensive, and, While effective, requires considerable machine work in the production of the article, thereby increasing the cost of manufacture, due to the fact that the conical formation of the free end of the'needle base has to be accurately made otherwise the saine will not seat properly within the conical recess formed in the4 discharge end of the tip. The improvement set forth in this application, and hereinafter described, remedies the above objections by the following means. The free end of the needle base is made of softer material than the conical recess in which it seats, and is not of conical exterior, but is cylindrical, the extremity of said end being at right angles to its side walls.
In the present application, the polygonal portion of the needle base being held freely yet securely in its polygonal recess is self aligning and, the free end of the needle base being made of softer material than the conical recess in which it seats, reduces the friction to such a degree that only a minimum amount of pressure is needed to produce a fluid tight joint.
The object of making the free end of the needle base of this construction and from softer material is to provide a better and tighter washerless seat, said end automatically wiping itself into and finding its own seat. This also lessens the cost of manufacture in that the said end of the needle base does not have to be constructed so accurately due to the soft material making its own seat in the harder conical recess.
lVith the above mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any `of the advantages of the invention.
To more fully comprehend the invention, reference is directed to the accompanying drawings wherein Fig. l is an elevation of a hypodermic syrllge- Fig. 2 is a longitudinal transverse section on line 2 2 of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. if is a longitudinal section of the coupling 4. y
Fig. 5 is an elevation of the adapter.
v Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts, l indicates a conventional type hypodermic syringe `barrel within which is adapted to fit the piston 2. The lower end of the barrel l is provided with a nipple 3 upon which is adapted for threaded connection the coupling 4. The discharge end of the coupling 4 is provided with a recess 5, and within the base of4 said recess is inserted a member G of relatively hard metal provided with a conical seat 6. To the outer threaded end of the coupling 4 is connected the adapter 7 formed with a polygonal recess 8 in which is received the polygonal portion 8 of the needle base 9 mounting a needle l0. The free end of the base 9 is cylindrical, as at l1, the extremity of said end being at right angles to its side walls, and said cylindrical end being made of relatively soft metal. It will be observed that the base 9 is removable within the recess 8 of the adapter 7, and on the coupling of the parts 4 and 7 the soft metal cylindrical end ll of the needle base 9 contacts with the conical portion 6 of the member 6, as shown in Fig. 2, automatically wiping itself into and finding its own seat.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is l. A hypodermic syringe including a barrel provided with a discharge orifice formed at its end with a conical recessed seat; a needle having a base provided at'its inner end with a portion of relatively softmetal having a transverse end face adapted for reception Within said conical recessed seat; and means for connecting said needle base and the barrel adaptedfor forcing the 'peripheral edge of said soft metal portion to` a seat in the conical recessed end of the barrel.
2. A hypodermic syringe including a barrel provided With a discharge orilice formed at its end with a conical recessed seat; a needle7 having a base provided at its inner end #ith a cylindrical portion of relatively soft metal having a transverse end face adapted for reception Within said conical recessed seat; and means for connecting said needle base and the barrel adapted for forcing the peripheral edge of the transverse end face of said portion of the needle base into rontact with said conical seat.
3. il hypodermic syringe including a barrel provided with a discharge ori-lice formed at its end with a conical recessed seat; a needle, having a base provided at its inner end with a cylindrical portion oif relatively soft metal having a transverse end face adapted for reception'within said conical recessed seat; a member threaded to said barrel and adapted to'force the peripheral edge of the transverse end face of said portion 'of the needle base into engagement with rotation. Y
i aoc ermic s 7ri e i a 4l Al y1 l y ngevincludinb L b i relvprovided with a discharge orifice7 the outer end-being recessed, a member of relatively hard metalprovided With a conical seat inserted Within the recessed portion of said discharge orice; a needle having a base provided at its inner end with a cylindrical portion oi relatively soft metal having a transverse end face adapted for reception Within said conical seat; member threaded to said barrel and adaptedv to force the peripheral edge of the transverse end face of said portion of the needle'base int-o engagement With said conical seat; and means within saidmember for holding` said needle base against rotation.
5. hypodermic syringe including` a barrel provided with a discharge orifice, the outer end being recessed; a member of relatively hard metal provided with a conical seat inserted Within the recessed portion of said discharge orilice; a needle having a base provided at its inner end with a cylindrical portion of relatively soit metal having a transverse end lace adapted Jfor receptionivithin said conical seat: and means for V'connecting said needle base and the barrel 'ariapted for forcing the peripheral edge of the transverse end race of said portion of the needle base into contact with said conical seat.
in testimony whereof We have signed our naines to this specification.
