D. R. LOVEJOY MEANS FOR CONTROLLING THE POTENTIAL GRADIENT I A CONDUCTOR Filed Nov. 10; 1925 Patented Apr. 27, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DIMMITT ROSS LOVEJ'OY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO ILOVIEJ'OY DEVELOP- MENT CORPORATION, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
MEANS on CONTROLLING THE POTENTIAL GRADIENT IN A ooNnooToa.
Application filed November 10, 1925. Serial No. 68,247.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DIMMITT Ross LovE- JOY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of s New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Controlling the Potential Gradient ina Conductor, of which the following is a specification.
10 in potential in a conductor vary from uniformity in some particular way. Such instances often arise in radio circuits. More-.
over the character of such variation may require changesfrom time to time to suit different conditions. Resistances are in general made uniform in value from one end to another as in the case of a carbon rod or a wire coil.
My invention comprises a means of utiliz- 19 ing such uniform resistances to produce a potential gradient of any desired character as will be better understood from the following description in connection with the single figure of the accompanying drawing which shows in diagrammatic form an embodiment of my invention.
A. 13. represents a uniformly wound resistance of relatively high value as compared with another uniformly wpund resistance 39 D. E. A source F causes a flow of current in D; E. and there will be a uniform drop of potential therein. In A. B. it is desired to establish a potential gradient-which is not uniform.
This is accomplished by means of a plurality of cross connections P. G. to m. 0. and by suitably adjusting these, any point on A. B. may be impressed with the potential of any point on D. E.
C and Z represent output or work terminals one or both of which may be adjustable along the gradient resistance A. B.
Thus Z may be adjusted initially and then remain fixed and 0 moved back and forth in synchronism. with. some other device. In this case the voltage impressed upon G will vary not in proportion to its movement but in proportion to the various potentials impressed upon the resistance A. B. between Z and C at different points. It is sometimes desired to have the drop I claim 1. Means of controlling the potential gradient in a conductor, comprising, a resistance connected to a source of current, a resistance connected to an output circuit and a series of adjustable cross connections between the two resistances.
29 Means of controlling the potential gradient in a conductor, comprising, a resistance uniform in value throughout its length, connected to a source of current, a second uniform resistance connected to a work circuit and a series of cross connections between the resistances with means for connecting the terminals of the cross connections at any desired points on the said resistances.
3. Means of controlling the potential gradient in a conductor, comprisingya resistance of uniform value connected to a source of current, a second resistance of uniform value but of higher value than the other resistance and a plurality of cross connections between the two resistances, the said cross connections having means for connecting them at various points along the resistances.
4:. Means of controlling the potential gradient in a conductor, comprising, a re v sistance connected to a source of current, a
resistance connected adjustably to an output circuit and 'a series of adjustable cross connections between the two resistances.
