BOOI' COVERING.
Application!!! November I, 1921. Serial 110.5135.
. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT ABRAHAM. a citizen ofthe United States. residing in the city, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improve- .ments in Roof Coverings, of which the following is a'specitication.
This inventionrelates to roof coverings made of coloredslate surfaced prepared roofing shingles or strips laid in overlapping courses. a
One of its objects is to provide a roofing of attractive and ornamental appearance which is obtained by laying the roof with elements of one or more colors and hv tinting the exposed portions of some of the elements of each color with bituminous paint color.
- invention.
' tapestry effect.
compositions of different shades of that Accordingto my invention I provide a roofing, the exposed portion of which is colored in three or more different shades, interspersed in an irregular manner, but blending to give a pleasing variegated color or tapestry efl'ect.
The invention may also-beapplied to exweather. The elements. may consist of in dividual shingles,'in which case thelatera-lly' adjacent ones oteach, row will be spaced apart or the elements'may consist of socalled shingle-strips which when laid in overlapping courses simulate the appearance of individualvshingles. -Themethod of lay ing the elements, however, does not constitute a part of this invention and is merely described in order to illustrate an application of the invention. Furthermore, the ele-- ments used may be of any desired configuraq ti n. 4
Preferably, though not necessarily, all of the. elements used 1n laying the roof will be of a single co or. To impart the desired decorative effect, I apply bituminous pig ment-paint compositions of difl'erent shades of the color of the :element to the exposed portions of certain thereof. selected in sp'arse 'order but so that the-total quantity painted with each shade bearsa proportionate relation to the whole. r I
For example. assumingtliat the roof illustrated in the drawings is laid with green slate covered individual shingles, in carrying out my invention I apply a darker shade I of green bituminous paint; to 'the-expo's.cd portions A of approximately 25% of the shingles, and a lighter shade of green bi-, tuminous pair; to the exposed portions B- p. The exposed portion C of of another 25 the remaining shingles are 1 left uncoated, that is in their original; color. By selecting the shingles to be painted at. random. but' inf approximately the proportions stated, I am enabled to produce a roof covering having I an attractive ornamental appearance which gives a pleasing variegated coloror tapestry effect.
- For the purpose of tinting the elements I" prefer toemploy a composition of substantial-ly the character set forth in Letters Pat out No; 824,898, grant-ed to me on July 3;
1908, but I do not neossarilv limit myselfto that composition as any suitable bituminous paint may be used.
lVhat I claim is:
1. A roof covering composed of prepared roofing elements laid in overlapping courses. each element having a Coating of colored grit, the exposed portions of certain ofthe elcuientshaving a coating of bitliuni'nous paint applied over the grit coating, the color of; the bituminous paint coating being the same as that ofthe" grit coating but of a different shade. i
2. A roof covering composed of roofing.
elements laid in overlapping course's, each element having a coatlng of colored grit, the
exposed portions of approximately 25% of .the elements having a coating of bituminous paint applied over the grit coating, the
color ofthe bituminous paint coating being the same as that of the grit coating but of a different shade. a, A prepared roofing shingle; havingone entire surfaceface'd with grit of a single color, and havingsa coating ofbituminous coloring matter of a diflerent'shadefrom the color of the grit: applied; on the facing of the lower third'portion of the shingle. HERBERT ABRAHAM.-
