Application filed September 1191925.
My invention relates to improvements in tables of the following type of construction and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.
More particularly described, the invention contemplates the provision of a table of the type having supporting members swingingly attached to the table top and swingable from active position at right angles to the plane of the table top to in active position close to the underside of the table top.
An object of. the invention is the provision in a table of the character described of novel, simple and quickly adjustable bracing means for releasably holding the swingable supporting members in active positions and substantially rigid with the table top.
A further object of the invention is the provision in a table of the character described of brace members pivotally attached to the swingable supporting members of the table and foldable with the supporting members to positions close to the underside of the table top together with means of simple construction for holding the folded brace members clamped against the table top when the supporting members are in inactive positions and for securing the brace members to the table top; so as to prevent folding of the brace member and the supporting members toward the table top when the supporting members of the table are in active positions.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description, considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the improved table in set up operative position ang tilted slightly from upright position, an
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the table folded.
The improved table comprises a top 1 which may be rectangular, as shown, or may have any other desirable configuration.
A pair of parallel cross strips 2 are secured to the top 1 against the underside of the latter and adjacent to opposite edges of the table top.
A pair of supporting members 3 are at- Serial' No. 55,796.
tached by hinges 4; to the under side of the table top close to strips 2 to swing about axes parallel to the strips 2 from active positions at right angles to the table top as shown in Fig. 1 to inactive positions against the under side of the table top shown in Fig. 2.
Each of the supporting members 3 preferably comprises a pair of legs 5 connected adjacent to their ends by a cross bar 6 and connected intermediate their ends by second cross bar 7. The hinges 4iaforementioned are attached to the inner sides of the inner end portions of the legs 5 and the cross bars 6 and 7 are secured to the outer faces of the legs The cross bars 6 abut the inner edges of the strips 2 when the supporting members 3 are in active positions and thus cooperate with the strips 2 and the table top to hold the supporting members against swinging outwardly from positions to extend at right angles to the table top.
The respective supporting members 3 attached to the table top so that the ends of corresponding legs 5 of the two supporting members may be disposed in juxtaposed relation to each other in the same plane and close to the under side of the table top when the supporting members are in inactive position as shown in Fig. 2.
The invention provides brace bars 8 for the supporting members 3. Each brace bar 8 has the outer end portion thereof formed to produce a hinge member 9 which is attached by a pintle 10 to a cooperating hinge plate 11 which is secured to the inner face of the cross bar 7 of the associated supporting member 3 intermediate the length of said cross bar 7. The brace bars 8 thus are attached to the supporting members 3 to swing about axes parallel to the axes of swinging movement of the supporting members 3. The respective brace bars 8 have the inner end portions thereof bent laterally at 12, the laterally bent end portion 12 of each brace bar being turned toward the other brace bar so that the laterally turned end portions 12 of the brace bars will overlap at the approximate center of the table top when the supporting members 3 are disposed at rightangles to the table top. These lapped or superposed laterally turned end portions 12 of the brace bars have alined openings 13 for the reception of an anchoring stud 1 1 which is fixed in the table top and depends from the center of the latter.
A short bar 15 is attached at one end by a flexible link 16 to an eye member 17 which also is fixed in the table top at a slight distance laterally of the center of the table top. 'lhe bar 15 has an opening intermediate its length for the reception of the extending end portion of the stud and thus is adapted to serve as a spacing member when a wing nut 18 is screwed on the end portion of the stud to position to clamp the bar 15 and the superposed inner end portions 12 of the brace bars against the underside of the table top. The brace bars thus will be held in positions to hold the supporting members 3 against swinging lrom active positions as shown in Fig. 1. hen desired, the wing nut 18 can be removed and the bar 15 and the brace bars 8 then canbe disen gaged from the stud 14:. The supporting members 3 then can be swung to positions to lie close to the under -t'ace Oil the table top and the brace bars 8 then will be positioned close to the table top between the legs 5 ofthe supporting members 3 and in the plane of said legs, asshown in Fig. 2.
The bar 15-then may be swung across the brace bars 8 and again engaged with the stud 14, after which the bar 15 will function to clamp the brace bars firmly to the table top when the nut 18 is screwed: on the stud 14 to position to tighten the bar 15 against the brace bars 8 and the brace bars 8' against the table top. The brace bars 8 and the supporting members 3 then will be held securely, although releasably in inactive positions against t-hetable top and the folded table will take up but relatively little space and can be readily stored or carried from place to place.
Obviously, the invention is susceptible of embodiment in forms other than that which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings and I therefore considel. as my own all such modifications and adaptations thereol as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim A table con'lprising a top, a pair of supporting members hinged to the top, a pair of brace bars for the supporting members each brace bar being hinged at its outer end to the associated supporting men'ibers and the brace bars having the inner end portions thereof bent laterally to overlap at the center of the table top, said lapped portions of the brace bars having alined openings, a pendant stud fixed to the table top at the center of the latter, said stud being adapted to extend through the openings in the'lapped end portions of the brace bars, a bar swingingly suspended at one end from the table top between said stud and a side edge of the table top and having an opening intermediate its length for the reception of the pendant end portion ofthe stud, and a nut in threaded engagement with the stud for preventing displacement of the bar from the stud, said bar being of sullicient length to clamp said brace bars against the under side of the table top when the brace bars have been disengaged from the stud' and the supporting members and the brace bars have been folded to positions to lie close to the under side of th table top.
