It will be apparent from the description that as the motion of the loom proceeds the feed wheel 23 will be continuously driven and will draw off the filling strand from the roll 5 and deliver a supply of slack strand between the roll and the holding device 9. The needle, operating intermittently, draws up a sufficient amount of the fillmg strand from this slack without any resistance from the heavy roll 5. The speed of the parts is so proportioned that the continuous feed of the strand supplies constantly sufficient slack for the action of the needle. If, however, it is desired to interrupt the feed the lever 21 may be swung counterclockwise viewing Fig. 2, releasing the pressure of the rolls 29 on the feed roll n8. Since the fairleader 37 is mounted on the lever 29, the strand will be lifted out of cooperation withthe wheel 23, thus positively stopping, the feed. This removal of the strand from the groove in the wheel 23 by the action of the fairleader permits it to be lifted out from between the wheels if desired, in which case the lever may again be released and the feed of the strand will be, interrupted although the wheel 23 may'still be driven, this-being a convenient operation for certain contingencies of adjustment of the loom mechanism.
The two binder wheels29 tension a considcrable length of the strand tensioned around the feed wheel 23 and the strand is thus smoothed out and straightened and delivered in good condition for incorporation into the fabric.
For different widths of fabric a shorter or longer filling strand is required. In the embodiment of the invention shown the wheel 23 may be changed to provide a wheel of sufficient size. for the desired purpose. Obviously the arrangement of parts is such that the two binder wheelsv will cooperate with feed wheels of different sizes.
Having described in detail the particular embodiment of my invention shown by way of example in the accompanying drawing, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent I shall express in the following claims 1. In a loom of the class described wherein a mechanical picking device grasps the end of the filling strand and carries it endwise through the shed, a holding device for clamping the strand to hold the end to be taken by the picking device and arranged to yield to the traction of the latter and driven means continuously acting on the filling to feed it from the supply independently of said picking means and deliver it slackly t0 the rear of said holding means.
2. In a loom of the class described wherein a mechanical picking device grasps the end of the filling strand and carries it endwise through the shed, a holding device for presenting the end of the strand for operation of the picking means thereon and means through which the strand passes acting thereon to draw out a length thereof between the supply and the holding device, said means closing on and gripping a considerable length of strand whereby to true the same.

Ina loom of the class described a filling strand supply, a holding device for presenting the end of the strand for operation of picking means thereon and means interposed between the holder and supply for feeding and conditioning the strand comprising a relatively large, grooved, driven wheel and a pair of cooperating binder wheels pressed toward said driven wheel at spaced points about the circumference thereof.

A device for feeding filling strand comprising as a unitary mechanism a frame for mountingon the loom side, a shaft carried thereby having an end provided with a gear adapted to cooperate with a gear on a shaft of the loom, a feed wheel taking'motion therefrom and a spring-pressed, movable support on the frame having a binder wheel cooperating with said feed wheel.
5. A device for feeding filling strand comprising asa unitary mechanism a. frame for mounting on the loom side, a shaft carried thereby having an end provided with a gear adapted to cooperate with a gear on a shaft of the loom, a feed wheel taking motion therefrom, a sprin -pressed,'movable support on the frame having a binder wheel cooperating with said feed wheel and a fairleader on said support.
6. A device for feeding filling strand comprising as a unitary mechanism a frame for mounting on the loom side, a shaft carried thereby having an end provided with a gear adapted to cooperate with a gear on a shaft of the loom, a feed wheel loose on the shaft, back gearing driving the wheel from a the shaft and a spring-pressed, movable support on the frame having a binder wheel cooperating with said feed wheel.
7. A device for feeding filling strand comprising as a unitary mechanism a frame for mounting on the loom side, a shaft carried thereby having an end provided with a gear adapted to cooperate with a gear on ashaft of the loom, a feed wheel taking motion from the shaft, a movable spring-pressed support on the frame and a pair of binder wheels on the support adapted to press on the feed wheel at spaced points. i 1
