This invention relates to air cleaners for carburetors.
6 large in comparison with the jet nozzlesuppl the combustible hydro-carbon used as a 35 By reason of this very large air intake and, iallyin the case of motor vehicles travel ng over dusty roads a considerable quantity of dust and dirt 1s apt to be drawn" into the carburetor with the air to form the mixture. The principal object ofthe resent device is to rovide an air purifier w 'ch, without materially cutting down the air supply to the co air from impurities.
With the above and other objects in view as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in generalof certain novel. details of construction and combinations of arts hereinafter fully described,-illustrate in the ac companying drawings and specifically ri i "(1r wings in ch e accom an a e aracters of referel ice indi cate like parts in the several views, and: v
Figure 1 is a vertical median section through an air purifier constructed in accordance with this inventiom Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 thereof.
Figure 8is an enlarged plan view of a certain air valve used herewith.
In the embodiment of the invention herein shown there is provided a device havin an intake connection or end 10 which l eads through a reversely curved passage 11 into a circular chamber 12, the curved passage 11 bein arranged substantially tangential to the c amber. The lower part of this chamher is surrounded by a frusto-conical wall 13 while the upper part is surrounded by an interrupted circular wall 14. Depending from the to of the chamber 12 and concentric with t a chamber is a tubular member 14 open at the bottom and at the top communieating with an outlet passage 15 having an open outlet end 16. This and 16 may be connected to the carburetor by any suitable means such as an air hose or it may be screwed directly on to the carburetor, the connectin means forming no part of the present invention and consequently not being here su "dust and other drical wall 17. a On the lower thus locks thebolt at the lower cy carburetor, will thoroug1 y cleanse the in tacle 19.
shown, the lower part of the frusto-conical W 13 te minates in asubstantially cylin-' cylindrical wall is fitted a packing'18 which receives the to of a dust rece ordinary .cylin cal form. centrally through the receptacle 19 and the main body and its tubular portion 14 is a bolt 20 which he: on eaglii bend ascrew portion-2 engag a wing nut 22 whi the several'parts ether. On ical part of the main chamber is a hollow irusto-conical spreader 23 and also on this belt isfixed, just at the lower end of the tubular portion 14, a cylindrical valve 24 havin a series of OPBDl iI ES 25 in its bottom provi ed'with lips 26. is valve has a flange 27 which surrounds the tube 14 in slightlg aced relationthereto to make an easy a ile; spacing being'shown somewhat exaggerated 1n the drawing but in actual construction, the diameter of t a valve is such as to permit it to ass through the space within the wall 17.
t will be seen that this bolt has a triple function; it holds the arts together, it is used to adjust the sprea er, and it is used to ad'ust the valve,
in use the entering air follows a iral th, as indicated by thearrows, aroun the Eddy and then passes up through the openings 25 and the tube 24 and out through the outlet 16. Owing to the downward iral motion ofthe air the dust'and dirt p down'between the baflle 23 and the walls of the lower ortion 17 and collect in the recepgleanwhile the clean air flows into the carburetor.
- There has thus been provided a simple and etiicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the formand construction of the invention without departing from the mateedge of this table 19 of rial spirit thereof. It is not, therefore, demo Havin' thus described the invention, what is claims as new, is:
1. In a device of the kind described, a body rtion having an inlet and an outlet, the inst being arranged to direct incoming air tangentially of the body and downwardly thereof, a depending tubular portion arranged in the body and open at the bottom, said tubular portion having communication with a passage leading to the outlet, and a collectin receptacle below the body, said receptac e being detachable from the body, a'boit passing centrally, through the body, the tubular portion and rece tacle and securing the receptacle removab y on the body, each end .of said bolt being threaded and said ends projecting respectively through the to of the body and the bottom of the receptac e, and independent nuts on the opposite ends of said bolt whereby the bolt may be shifted vertically and the elements car.- ried by said bolt be adjusted, and a frustoconical baflie carried'by the bolt and having its lower edge spaced from the mner we of the bod 2. In a dhvice of the kind described, a body portion having mle arm ed to direct incoming an tangen y of e body and downwardly thereof, a demnding tubular portion arranged in the dy and open at the bottom,
, the bed an inlet and an outlet, the
end of said bolt being threaded and said ends projecting. respectively through the top of and the bottom of the receptacle, and 1n ependent nuts on the opposite ends of said bolt whereby the bolt may be shifted vertically and the-elementscarried by said bolt be adjusted, and a frusto-conical bafile carried by the boltand having its lower ed e spaced from the inner wall of the body, an a ported valve providedwith directing li s carried bythe bolt immediately below the tubular portion and having a flange surrounding said tube portions.
