MASSAGE APPLIANCE.

This invention relates to amassage appliance ofthe hand operated type and'is designed primarily for use in connection with the treatment of the scalp, b'ut'it is to be understood that a massage appliance in accordance with this invention can be employed for any purposes for which it is found applicable, and the invention has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an appliance of the class referred to having means for not only setting up a massage action when the appliance is used; but further capable of automatically supplying a liquidv for the treatment of the i5 scalp or body during the massage action whereby such liquid can be worked into the scalp or body glands to assist in restoring the same to normal condition or worked into the scalp glands to strengthen the roots oft-he hair. Y

Further object-s of'the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a massage appliance which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, flexible, compact, conveniently operated or employed, thoroughly efficient in its use, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture;

With the foregoingand other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically de scribed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the inventiombut it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which fall within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.

Referring to the drawing in detail, a magsage appliance .in accordance with this invention, includes a flexible body portion,sreferred to generally by the reference character l, and which consists of a sheet of flex: ible material, preferably rubber, of" the desired length and thickness. The body ,portion 4i includes a pair of oppositely extend.- ing' tapering end portions 5, 6 and an intermediate portion 7 of greater length than the width of the end portions 5,16,at the points of joinder thereof with the intermediate portion 7. The intermediate portion .7 is so v setup with respect to the end portions 5," 6, that one en'dof the intermediate portion will project from one side of each of the end portions 5, 6. The projecting portion of the intermediate portion 7 is indicated at 8 and is of rounded contour. Theend portion 6, at the longitudinal median thereof,

and in proximity to its free end is provided with a pair o'f spaced snap fastener memhers 9, and each of whichcoacts with a snap fastener member 10, carried at the outer end of the end port-ion 5, for the purpose of securing the appliance to the hand of the operator or to an instrument used by the operatorwhen'the appliance is employed :for the purpose of massaging. The providing of the end portion 6 with a plurality of snap fastener members will provide for securing the appliance to hands of different widths.

The outer face of the intermediate portion 7 is provided throughout with spaced, staggeredly arranged solid, tapered resilient protuberances 11 and the inner part of each end portion 5, 6 has the inner face thereof provided with protuberances ,12 which correspond in contour to the protuberances 11. The outer end of each of the protuberances 11 and 12 is slightly cupped as indicated at 13. Y The outer face of the intermediateportion 7 is further provided with a series of small, tapered,'resilient pr-otuberances' 14 and each of which forms a liquid receiving chamber 15. Each of the protuberances 14 is furthermore provided with a normally closed outlet 16 for the chamber 15 and said outlet 16 will open when a protuberance 14 is compressed whereby the liquid from the e p the extended portion 8 of the intermediate portion 7. When the appliance is used the protuberances 11., 12 and 14 set up a massaging action, and on a slight compression upon the protuberances 14:, the outlets 16 will open so that during the massaging operation a liquid will be automatically supplied which will be employed to treat the scalp, or worked into the scalp or body glands, and when worked into the scalp glands will assist in treating the roots or strengthening the roots of the hair. The working of the liquid into the scalp or body glands will tend to assist to restore the same to normal condition.

Formed integral with the inner face of the intermediate portion 7, of less width than the width of said portion 7, and extending from one end to the other end thereof is a length of flexible material 18,'and which isformed 'ofthe same material as the material of the body portion 4:, and said length of material.

'18 is sosetup, relative to the inner face of the intermediate portion7, to provide a reser voir 19, for the liquid 20'which is discharged through the protuberances 14;. The sheet of material 18 is provided with an opening 21 for the reception of a holder. 22, which carries a plug 23. The plug 23 is removable so that access can be had to the-reservoir 19 for the-purpose of filling the same when desired.

The protuberances possess a compressible and an extendible characteristic during the massaging operation. The protuberances 14 whennot under a state of compression pre vent the discharge of liquid from the reservoir 1 9, but when under a state of compression the outlets 16 will open and allow for the discharge of the liquid during the massaging operation. The appliance, when used, is preferablyconnected to the hand of the operator and he can rapidly rub the scalp or body and apply a massaging action thereto, as well as rubbing in the'liquid which is discharged through the protuberances 14, and it is thought that the many advantages of a massage appliance, in accordance with this invention, can be readily understood, and

although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, yet it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction can be had which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

V hat I claim is A massage appliance comprisinga foldable body portion formed of a length of flexible material provided with means at its ends for adjustably'and detachably connecting it to the hand of an operator, said length of material formed of a pair of end parts and an'intermediate part of greater length than the end parts and projecting laterally with respect to aside edge of each of the end parts, said intermediate part having on its inner face integral means to provide an oval shaped liquid reservoir extending lengthwise thereof and of a length approximately equal to the length of said intermediate part, and

a group of compressible and extendible projecting hereto.
