Description
.L F.. c. SCHMIDT.
` Bottle.
Patented April 20,1875.
WITNESSES ATTOBN UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOTTLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,314, dated April 20, 1875; application filed October 24, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS F. C. SCHMIDT, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State ot' Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bottles, of which the following is a specification:
In the packing of glass bottles for storage or transportation, whether they are filled or empty, it is essential that they be packed snug, and so that they cannot move about.
This is more important as regards Wine-bottles, which are usually made long and tapering, and consequent-ly cannot be laid upon their sides and retain theirV true horizontal position.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a remedy for this, and allow the bottle to be made long and tapering` from the bottom upward; and it consists of a heavy ring surrounding the bottle at or near the bottom of the neck, which outer surface of the ring is equal to the diameter of the body of the bottle.
The accompanying drawing illustrates my invention, it being a Vertical section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.`
A represents the bottle, B is the neck, and C is the heavy ring at or near the botton of the neck. The outer surface or periphery ot' this ring is equal tothe circumference of body of the bottle, so that when the bottle is laid upon its side the ring will support itin a horizontal position, besides giving additional strength to the bottle.
This is a great advantage in packing the bottles for transportation, as well as When laying them singly on shelves, adds nothing to the expense or' manufacturing' them, and makes a more tasty and desirable article for the market.
Having thus described my invcn tion, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The tapering bottle A, having a corrugation, C, ot' the same diameter as the Widest part ot' body, and arranged just below the neck B, as and for the purpose described..
J. G. BAoKoEEN, MAX KEAUssEE.
