UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE FRANK W. MIX, OF TERRYVILLE, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE EAGLE LOCK COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HASPS FOR TRUNK- LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,230, dated May 11, 1875 application filed April 20, 1875.
CASE A.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK W. MIX, of Terryville, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and usefullmprovementsin Trunk-Hasps, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention consists of the peculiar construction of the parts which form the join t, all as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation of the rear side of a trunk-hasp which embodies my invention, and Fig. 2 is a similar view of two parts of the same detached from each other.
A designates the upper portion, to which the hasp B is hinged. This portion A is provided with recesses a a, sunk upon its inner face, as shown in Fig. 2. The hasp B is formed of cast metal, and its hub 11 is cast hollow, except a small portion at each end, which portions I term ears 0 c, the hollow in the hub being of such size as to allow ample room for the pintle d. The ears 0 0 are drilled out at their centers, the holes therein being of such size that the pintle d fits easily, so as to allow the hasp to turn on it. The pintle dis of such length as to project a short distance at each end of the huh I), and when inserted therein, as shown in Fig. 2, it is placed with its ends within the recesses 00 a of the upper portion A, and asheet-metal plate, 0, slotted, so as to allow free play of the ears 0 c, is riveted firmly to the upper portion A, to hold said portion and the hasp B together. The recesses a a should be so shallow that the plate 0 may come close to or bear upon the. pintle d, and hold it so firmly that it will not rattle, and, preferably, so as to hold the pintle d so tight that itwill not revolve, in which case the hasp B will turn upon it.
This construction is not only cheap and substantial, but it makes a snug joint that always Works freely.
I claim as my invention- In a trunk-hasp, the hasp B, provided with the hub formed of the parts 0 b 0, as shown and described, in combination with the pintle d, upper portion A a a, and the plate C, all substantially in the manner specified.
