DEVICE FOR CORRECTING RESPIRATION.
Application led May 14, 1926.
This invention relates to certain novel improvements in a device for correcting respiration, and has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction of this character which will be highly efficient in use.
The invention contemplates a body adapted when in operative position to be placed at the entrance of the mouth and be held in such position by the lips, said bodyincluding valve member of the check valve type which will permit very slight exhaling but not inhaling, thereby forcing the inhaled air to be drawn through the nostrils and the greater amount of exhaled air to be exhaled through the nostrils.
@ther objects will` appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood with reference to the accompanying drawing in which;
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of a face showing the invention in applied position,
Figure 2 is a detail view of the invention removed from applied position,
.Figure 3 is a sectional detail view taken substantially on line 3-3 of Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is a sectional detail view taken substantially on line 4 4 of Figure 2.
In the drawing indicates a rubber body defining a central bore 11. The side edge portions 12 of the body are recessed as at 13 for the accommodation of the corner portions 14- of the mouth 15. The rear surface .16 of the body is curved longitudinally in an outwardly Adirection from the body as at 17, Figure 3 to conform to the outer surface line of the teeth 18.
The longitudinal edges 18 of the body define grooves 19 for the reception of the lips 20.
The bore 11 terminates at its forward end into a counter bore 21 and frictionally arranged in the bore is a valve member 22, said valve member being releasably held against removal by threads 23 formed on the shank 24. The shank 24 is formed integral With a head 25 defining a portion or base 26 confined in the counter bore 21. This head de- Serial No. 109,194.
fines a conical. tip 27 provided with space openings The head 25 provides a compartment 29 in communication with the passage 30 of the shank by a passage 31.
Arranged in the compartment is a rubberr valve disc 32 adapted to obstruct inhaling through the bore 3() but of such size as to permit slight exhaling through the openings 28.
To facilitate removal of the valve member there is provided a recess 33 in the body 10 whereby the finger nail (not shown) can be brought into Contact with edge portion 34 of the head. f
From the description set forth it is apparent that when the device is in operative position that the user can only exhale slightly but not inhale, as when it is attempted to inhale the valve disc closes the passage 31. Thus it will be seen that I provide a device which will effectively cure the undesirable feature of breathing through the mouth.
Having thus described the preferred form of construction of my invention, what I claim as new and useful is:
1. A devicel for correcting respiration including a'body having portions shaped to accommodate portions of the mouth, and a check valve, said body having a transversely extending bore formed Centrally therein for the accommodation of the check valve, said check valve including a slotted head, and a valve disc confined in the head and adapted to obstruct passage through the slots of the head whereby to prevent inhaling.
2. A device of the character described including a` body adapted to be positioned at the entrance of a mouth and defining a central passage, and a check valve confined in the passage permitting slight eXhaling and obstructing inhaling said check valve including a head having a conical tip provided with spaced openings, and a rubber disc confined in the head adapted to obstruct passage through the check valve during inhaling and to permit slight exhaling.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 28th day of April A. D., 1926.
KARL HRTL.
