UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM FRIEDMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO JOHN W. ARNOLD, DAN H. ARNOLD, ADELAIDE I. ARNOLD, AND MILDRED C. ARNOLD, COIARTNERS, DOING BUSINESS AS I. R. ARNOLD &. COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. 'Y.
COMBINATION PACKET.
Application filed November 25, 1825. Serial No. 71,332.
The objects of this invention are to provide a combination article compact in form, and of handy size and shape, convenient to use, sanitary, and of continued utility for a considerable time; to provide a structure by which requisite articles for individual use are carried by and protected within the same protective covering and all equally accessible by opening said cover; to provide individual make-up accessories which have to be removed from the article or packet for use and be thrown away after use; to provide an article of the nature specified which also includes a pad of paper for wiping purposes and which may also provide advertising space in connection with the packet as well as space for notes; to enable the protective covering to be employed as a backing when writing on the pad; to provide means for preventing the cosmetic from disfiguring other parts of the article; to provide one means or another within the packet on either side of the cosmetic for holding the cosmetic out of contact with other parts of the package; to prevent the cover from coming in contact with the cosmetic as said cover is closed; to secure simplicity of construction and operation, and to obtain other advantages and results as may be brought out in the following description.
Referrin the accompanying drawings in which li e numerals of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views;
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a preferred embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is an edge view of the same; and
Figures 3-10 inclusive are similar edge views of modified constructions of packets embodying features of my invention.
In the specific embodiment of the invention illustrated in said drawing, and particularly Figures 1 and 2, the reference numeral 1 indicates a' protective covering which may be made of a strip of cardboard or the like which is preferably transversely doubled at two separate places, as at 2 and 3, so as to provide what may for convenience be referred to as front and back cover sections 4 and 5 respectivelv and a front lip or marginal portion 6. e free end of the front cover section. 4 is adapted to be inserted under the 1i 6 when the packet is closed. The sever parts included within the cover are held together by a staple 7 which passes through the lip 6 and back cover section 5 adjacent the bend 2 above referred to.
Included between the front cover and the back cover is a strip of unitary devices 8 which preferably are sub-divided portions of a strip of cardboard on the ends of each of which is provided a tip of cosmetic 9 sufiicient for a single or individual use so that each time one of the strips is torn out and one of the cosmetics used the strip can and will be thrown away and the next time cosmetic is desired another strip will be used until they are all gone. Also included within the covering is a pad 10 which preferably includes sheets of aper some of which are impregnated or ot erwise suitably carry rouge, other powder, and others perfume, whereas others may be just sheets of paper of suitable texture for wiping purposes, as for spreading or removing the cosmetics or for such other purposes as the user may find desirable. The paper is preferably for all of its purposes in connection with beauty make-up of quite a fine texture and comparatively quite thin. It is, however, suitably supported so as to be usable for making notes upon without punching through the paper with the point of the pencil. The paper also afiords am le space for advertising as well as space or notes,
and accordingly enhances the value of the article as an advertising medium. Preferably the sheets forming the pad are included between suitable stiff supports such as cardboard, and in Figures 1 and 2, I have shown the supports comprising the back coverv 5 on one side and a cardboard divider 11 at its other side, the said divider separating the pad of paper from the cosmetics. Likewise, on the opposite side of the cosmetic from said divider I preferably employ a similar piece of cardboard also actln as a protector 12. In each instance,
the divider and the protector are preferably lon er than the cosmetic and of sufliciently sti material so as not to readily bend or crumple against the cosmetic. The protector 12 will therefore be engaged by the cover 4 as'the same is turned over to be inserted beneath the lip 6 and will prevent said cover from engaging the cosmetic during this operation.
The cosmetic 9 is preferably prevented from engagement with the divider and from engagement with the protector by suitableintervenin guards 13. In the present instance sai ards 13 are referably 1eces of cardboar? of suitable t ickness inc uded between the cosmetic and said divider also between the cosmetic and said protector. It is to be understood, however, that other means than sheets of cardboard may be employed, and in Figures 310 have shown various means of separatlng the parts to protect the same from the cosmetlc and to rotect the cosmetic.
In Figure 3 I have shown a packet including front and back covers and 5, hp 6, staple 7 cosmetic members 8 with cosmetic 9 thereon, pad 10, divider 11 and protector 12 all similar to those parts as described above in connection with Figure 1. In the construction now being described I also provide guards 14, .14 on opposite sides of the cosmetic members, said guards taperlng so as to be much thicker at the ends thereof next the cosmetic.
In Figure 4 I have shown guards 15, 15 the outer ends of which are curled over, as at 16, so as to obtain increased thickness thereat and thereby protect the cosmetic. In this particular view I have chosen to show a somewhat different arrangement of parts,
placing the cosmetic members 17 in the middle of the packet with the guards 15 upon opposite sides and protectors or dividers 18, 18 outside of the guards. I provide a cover which is separable at the end of the package next the cosmetic and include a pad 19 between each section of the cover and the adjacent divider.
In Figure 5, I show a cover similar to that described in connection with Figures 1, 2 and 3 having front and back sections 4 and 5 and lip 6 with a staple 7 to hold the parts together. I also provide a cosmetic member 8 with cosmetic 9 on the end thereof and also a pad 10 and separator 11 all as heretofore described. Between the cosmetic and the separator I provide a guard 20 consistin of a sheet of material such as light cardboar or heavy paper the outer end of :yvhich is enlarged by any suitable means such as providing a ridge of wax 21 or other material upon the same. If so desired, this wax may be applied directly upon the divider and as illustrative of this modification I have shown a protector 22 having a ridge of wax or other suitable material 23 thereon so that the protector performs the function of the protector and the uard.
This feature of utilizing the divider and protector for the double purpose does not necessarily have to be by means of an added material but may be performed by turnin out a lip from either of those parts whic will engage the cosmetic member. As illustrating this feature, reference may be had to Figure 6 wherein the cosmetic member 8 is he (1 away from the divider 24 and protector 25 by lips 26 stam from the said parts and turned toward t e cosmetic member. In this connection it may be pointed out that a slit or o ening 27 results in stamping this lip from t e material, and this slip oropening is preferably opposite the cosmetic so as to give greater clearance and also to expose the cosmetic to view.
The li s for separating the cosmetic from the divi er and protector may be bent from separate guards inserted for that purpose, and this is shown done in Figure 7. In that view guards 28, 28 are shown on opposite sides of cosmetic member 8 with lips 29 bent just below the cosmetic 9. In the present showing I have illustrated both lips bent in the same direction so that the free end of one lip engages the cosmetic member whereas the free end of the other lip engages the divider.
It is within the scope of the invention to apply the feature of guarding the cosmetic where the cosmetic members are in more than a single row. As shown in Figure 8, there may be a plurality of rows of cosmetic members 8 and between the rows of cosmetic members are dividers 30 and between the dividers and the cosmetic are guards 30.
The pad may also be used to perform the function of guard if so desired, and as illustrating this feature I have shown leaves 31 of a pad included between cosmetic member 8 and the pack portion 5 of a cover, said leaves terminating below the tip or cosmetic 9. The ends of the leaves may be bent over where the length thereof exceeds the length of the cosmeticmember, and ,as illustrative of this feature I have shown several rows of cosmetic members 8 which are shorter and between the several rows have included leaves of the pad 31 the outer ends of which are doubled as at 32.
- If preferred, the leaves of the pad may be included within an outside cover so as to be separated from the cosmetic as illustrated in Figure 10. In that view, I have shown a separator 33 having an extended end which constitutes a front cover 34. A strip of Ill cosmetic members 8 is provided with aguard 35 included between said cosmetic members and the divider 33. A similar guard 35 is provided on the opposite side of the cosmetic and outside of that is a pro-' tector 36. On the opposite side of the divider 33 from the cosmetic is attached a pad 37 with a cover 38 on the outside thereof.
Obviousl other detail changes may be made in t e construction and use of my improved packet, and I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise units specified there as to size, shape or materials or order in which they are included, except as set forth in the following claims when construed in the light of the prior art.
Having thus described my invention, I claim l. A beauty compact comprising a plurality of make-up articles including a cosmetic on a stem, all of said articles being secured together, and means for keeping the cos metic out of contact With any other part.
2. A beauty compact comprising a strip of members having tips of cosmetic thereon, another make-up article associated with said members and means for preventing contact of the cosmetic therewith.
3. A beauty compact comprising a strip ,of members having tips of cosmetic thereon, another make-up article associated With said members and a guard for preventing contact of the cosmetic with another part.
4. A beauty compact comprising a strip of members having tips of cosmetic thereon, another make-up article associated with said members and a plane guard of equal thickness throughout for preventing contact of the cosmetic with another part.
5. A beauty compact comprising a strip of members having tips of cosmetic thereon, anther make-up article associated with said members and a guard having an outstanding bent portion for preventing contact of the cosmetic with another part.
6. A beauty compact comprising a strip of members having tips of cosmetic thereon, another make-up article associated with said members and a guard having a portion of itself next to the cosmetic bent backwardly upon itself for preventing contact of the cosmetic with another part.
7. A beauty compact comprising a strip of members having tips of cosmetic thereon, another make-up article associated with said members and a guard having its edge next the cosmetic curled over for preventing contact of the cosmetic with another part.
8. A beauty compact comprising a strip of members having tips of cosmetic thereon, an other make-up article associated with said members and a guard comprising a projection interposed adjacent to the cosmetic for preventing contact of the cosmetic with another part.
9; A beauty compact comprising a plurality of members having cosmetic on the ends thereof. said members being spaced so as to be out of contact from each other, and means for covering said members.
10. A beauty compact comprising a cos metic unit having cosmetic on one end thereof, a cover for said cosmetic unit, means for holding the cosmetic on said unit out of contact from other parts, a pad of make-up sheets. a separate cover for said sheets, and means for holding all of said parts to ether.
