Referring to the preferred form of my in- Y vention, illustrated in Figs. 1 through 3, 1
have shown a dustcapifor use in connection with lubricant-receiving nipples to exclude dustand dirt therefrom.
The preferred form of nipple, as illustrated, is provided with a threaded central portion 5 for engagement with the nozzle of a lubricant-expelling gun. At one side of the central portion 5 is a fine threaded portion 7 for securing the nipple to the part to be lubricated and at the other side of the central portion 5 is a cylindrical portion 9 for engagement by the sealing element of a lubricant-expelling gun. The nipple is also provided with a neck 11, located between the central portion 5 and the cylindrical portion 9, for cooperation with the resilient means in the dust cap to retain the dust cap in position upon the nipple.
The preferred form of dust cap, as illustrated, includes a casing pressed from two pieces of sheet metal and also includes a relatively narrow strip of metal 12, which is held between the two pieces of the cap as best illustrated in Fig. 2. One of the pieces of the cap provides a skirt portion 13, adapted to cover the threads of the central portion 5 and the same piece also presents an enlarged cylindrical portion 15, which presents at its outer end a flange 17 for cooperation with the other piece ofthe cap which 2 presents a closed endi19 at oneendthereof and a flange 21 rolled over the flanged? to provide .a finger hold 23 by which to remove the-cap from the nipple;
- The strip 12 is preferably formed from a flat relatively thin strip of metal soas to fit the closedend l9 and then project upward to fit and be held between the flanges 21 and 17 respectively, of the-casing parts, as'illustrated. The free ends of the resilient member extend from between the flanges 17 and 21 toward the open end'of-the casing, term1nat1ng at the end of the enlarged cylindrical portion'15 to provide "resilient jaws 25 r and 27 for enga ement with the neck 11 provided on the n1pple.- The extremeends of ithe resilient member '12 extend, upwardly from the jaws 25 and-27to provide cams '29 and 31, which engage the end of the nipple,;when thecap is being-applied thereto so as" to expand thejaws 25 and 2-7 to permit entrance of the nipple within the cap. The enlarged portion 15 is provided sov as to permit expansion of the jaws; when-the. cap is being applied to the nipple or disengaged therefrom, the jaws riding along the surface of the cylindrical portion 9 of the nipple until they snap into engagement with the neck 11.
Thus I have vprovided a dust-excluding cap which is simple, inexpensive and durable in construction, and which may be easily attached and detached from a lubricantrecelv ng nipple and will remain in position upon the nipple until manually removed therefrom.
Referring now to the modified form of my invention illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5, I have shown a resilient member 33 adapted to be used in connection with a casing similar to that shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, but wherein the finger grip is located adjacent the closed end of the cap. This form of resilient member is preferably pressed from a flat sheet of metal and is provided with a plurality of contractible and expansible arms 35 provided with neck-engaging jaws 37 and cam-shaped ends 41, substantially as shown and described in connection with the preferred embodiment of my invention.
A third form of dust cap is illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7 and this cap is pressed from two pieces of metal, one of which presents a jaws and foam ends'substantially asshown and described in'connection with the preferred embodiment of my invention,
While I have shown and described a preferred and two modified forms'of my invention, itwill be understood that I have done so for clarification only and, while I have shown a preferred form of nipple, it should be understood that my invention is not necessarily limited to use with such a nipple,'my invention being best defined in the appended claims.
I claim I 1. A dust 'cap: for a lubricant-receiving nipple including a casing havinga skirt portion, a closed end, an enlarged cylindrical portion between-said skirt portion and said closed end, a finger grip formed by interlocking flanges on said enlarged portion and said closed end, and a plurality of neckengaging jaws Within said casing adjacent said enlarged portion,- said jaws free to expand and contract for engagement and disengagement with nipple.

A dust cap for a lubricant-receiving nipple comprising, in'combina tion, a twopiece casing secured together .by flanges to form a finger grip and a third member within said casing rigidly, clamped between the two parts of said casing, said third member presenting resilient fingers substantially parallel to the axis of said casing and said fingers presenting cam port-ions and neckengaging jaws for cooperating with a nipple to secure said casing thereto.
4:- A dust cap for a lubricantreceiving nlpple comprising, in combination, a twopiece casing secured together by flanges and presenting an enlarged cylindrical barrel portion adjacent the neck provided in a nipple and a plurality of resilient neckengaging'fingers within said casing and substantially parallel with the axis of said'enlarged barrel portion andspaced away therefrom to permit expansion thereof when engaging and disengaging the neck of the nipple.
