My invention relates to a combined struc ture for forming the curbing ofstreets and for providing means in connection therewith for advertising purposes.
The objects of my invention are: first, to provide a structure of this class which will form arigid, strong; and neat curbing betweerrsidewalks and'streets; second, to provide a structure of this class which will provide an eflicient form and permanent retaining means for the edge of. the sidewalk; third, to provide a structure of this class which will serve as a rigidcurbing, as well as an advertising means at its outer side; fourth, to provide advertising means in connection with curbing structures which are advantageously located with respect to the sidewalks and streets, which are protected, which are etlicicntly enclosed, and which are readily accessible; fifth, to provide means, in connection with a structural steel element adapted for supporting concrete construction, which serves as an illuminating means, guiding means, advertising means, or the like, in the side of the structural steel element; sixth, to provide a curbing structure which provides the outer edge of and a form for constructinga sidewalk, which structure comprises a plurality of long structural steel elements, abutted and secured together at their ends, which elements are adapted to be wholly enclosed, except at their front sides and at the extreme outer portion of their upper faces, by the material of'which the sidewalk is constructed; seventh, to provide a continuous structural steel curbing structure having sectional transparent plates over a continuous channel at its outer side and sectional retaining means for said plates, whereby said plates may be readily removasubstitution, vertising, repairing of illuminating means in the channel, and the like; eighth, to provide a novel shape for a structural steel element of the class mentioned; ninth, to provide novel advertising means, or the like, in connection with a curbing structure; tenth, to provide a structure of this class in combination with concrete or similar construction which is adapted for displaying in illuminated form at the outer side thereof advertising, street names, house and building numbers, and building names, and eleventh, this class which is simple and economical of'construction propor onare to its functions and which Wlll changing of adnot readily deteriorate or get out of order. it-h these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions, as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application in which: F 1g. 1 IS a fragmentary perspective view of a street corner showing a corner building,

Like characters of reference refer to similar parts and portions throughout the several views of the drawings.
The essential element of my structure is designated -1 in the drawings and is adapted, in its preferred form, to form the edge of the sidewalk, designated A, at its one side, and for enclosing an illuminating and advertising means at its outer side. This element 1 is substantially I-shaped in cross section, having a channel 1? at its normally inner side and channel 1 outer side, the latter being preferably of considerably greater depth than the former, as shown in Fig. 2. The upper/flange of the element 1 is provided with a longitudinal depression 1 which is-spaced inwardly from the front side of the element and the bottom of which is positioned below the upper face of the outer portion of the upper flange. The portion at the outer side of the element 1 which extends above the bottom of the depression 1, and designated. 1 serves as a forming edge for the sidewalk and means for retaining the concrete. Said depression is essentially provided for receiving a con crete-ccap homogeneous with the sidewalk s0 at its normally distributionof light Q mounted in said sockets The channel 1 strip 9, are

6.The elements 1 are made of considerable length, such as rail len ths, for economy of construction. When laid in position at the curbing, the same-are secured together at their abutting ends by means of plates'2 1 and screws .3, which plates are positioned in the depressions 1 and covered by the concrete cap of the sidewalk, as shown.

Near the outer edges of the lower side of the upper flange and" the upper side of the lower flange, are respectively provided longitudinalgrooves 1 and 1 into which are positioned the upper and lower edges of the transparent plate 5, which is preferably a glass plate. To protect the edges of the glass plate, and also to seal the compartment formed by the channel 1, I have pro- T vided at the upper and lower edgesof said plate, U-shaped yieldable members 6-which are preferably made of rubber, or other similar suitable material. Although the retaining members 9 are pivoted, asdescribed, the same, .when shifted upwardly of the glass .plate 5, are secured in position screws 11. It will be here noted that for convenience of construction, operation and repair, 'the .plate 5,-= as well as the retaining made in lengths convenient for handling, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. Be-

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a street curbing structure, a metal bar comprising a web and flanges at its upper and lower edges forming a channel at the outer side of the bar, a transparent plate positioned over the outer portion of said channel, means at the adjacent sides of the edges of said flanges for securing said plate in position, and tioned in said channel behind said plate.
2; In a street curbing structure, a metal bar comprising a web and flanges at its upper and lower edges forming a channel at the outer side of the bar, the upper side of the upper flange having a depression spaced backwardly from the front edge of the upper flange, the bottom of the depression being positioned below the upper face of the front portion of said flange.
3. In a street curbing structure, a metal bar comprising a web and flanges at its upper and lower edges forming a channel at the outer side of the bar, the adjacent inner sides'of s'aid flanges being provided near their outer edges with grooves, a transparent plate positioned with its upper and lower edges' in saidgrooves, and means for retaining saidplate in said. grooves from the outer side of the structure.
4. In a street curbing structure, a long structural form metal member having a wide and deep longitudinal channel at its normally outer side, a transparent plate positioned over the outer portion of said channel, means at the opposite sides of said channel and adjacent the normally outer side of said member for securing said plate in position from the outer side of the structure, an illuminating means positioned in said channel behind said plate. 5. In a street curbing structure, a long metal member having a wide and deep longitudinal channel at its normally outer side illuminating means posiand plate positioning grooves at the opposite sides of said channel adjacent the normally outer side of said member, a transparent plate positioned with its upper and lower edges in said grooves from the outer side of the structure and means for retaining said plate in said grooves.
6. In a street curbing structure, a long metal bar comprising a web and flanges at its-upper and lower edges forming a chan nel at the outer side of the bar, the adjacent inner sides of said flanges being pro vided near their outer edges with grooves, a transparent plate positioned with its upper and lower edges in said grooves, a metal strip secured over the outer side of the upper groove for retaining the upper edge of said plate, and a metal retaining strip pivotally mounted on the lower flange outside of the lower groove, and screw means securing said metal retaining strip against the lower edge of said plate.
7. In a street curbing structure, a long metal bar comprising a web and flanges at its upper and lower edges forming a channel at the outer side of the bar, the adjacent inner sides of said flanges being provided near their outer edges with grooves, a transparent plate positioned with its'upper and lower edges in said grooves, a metal strip secured over the outer side of the upper groove for retaining the upper edge of said plate, a metal retaining strip pivotally mounted on r the lower flange outside of the lower groove,

In a street curbing structure, a plu- I 'rality of metal bars, each comprising a web and flanges at its upper and lower'edges forming a channel at the outer side of the bar, said bars having depressions in the upper sides of the upper flanges, plates positioned 'in said depressions for securing the adjacent ends of said bars together, sectional transparent plates positioned over the outer portions of the channels in each bar, means at the'adjacent sides of the edges of said flanges for securing said sectional plates in position, and illuminating means positioned in said channelsbehind said sectional plates.

11. 111 a street curbing structure, a plurality of substantially I-shaped metal bars abutted end to end, the channels at the normally inner sides thereof being adapted for receiving concrete and for supporting sidewalks, the upper sides of the upper flanges having longitudinal depressions spaced backwardly from the front sides of the bars and with the bottoms thereof below the upper faces of the outer portions of the upper flanges, plates positioned in said depressions for connecting the adjacent ends of said abutplates being also positioned below the upper faces of the outer portions of the upper flanges, said depressions being adapted'for receiving concrete for forming the upper face of the sidewalk, and illumi- Eiating means in the outer channels of said ars. 1

In a street curbing structure, a plurality of substantially I-shaped metal bars abutted end to end, the channels at the normally inner sides there-of being adapted for receiving concrete and for supporting sidewalks, the upper sides of the upperflanges having longitudinal depressions spaced backwardly from the front sides of the bars and with the bottoms thereof below the upper faces of the outer portions of the upper flanges, plates positioned in said depressions for connecting the adjacent ends of said abutting bars, said plates being also positioned below the upper faces of the outer portions of the upper flanges, said depresbehind said and illuminating means concrete construction, said bar comprising a web and flanges at its upper and lower edges forming a channel atthe outer side of the bar, a transparent plate positioned over the 5 outer portion of said channel, and means at the adjacent sides of the edges of said flanges I for retaining said plate in position.
14. In a structure of the class described,
