Description

April 17, 1928. 1,666,699 6 W. HAG'EN GOLF BALL Filed Dec. 16, 1927 F47. z i I INVENTOR a/fer Haga Patented Apr. 17, 1 928.
UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
WALTER HAG-EN, F DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO L. A. YOUNG COMPANY, 01'- DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
GOLF BALL.
Application filed December 16, 1927. Serial 1W0. 240,461.
The main object of this invention is to provide a golf ball which is accurate in flight and also in puttin or rolling.
Objects pertaining to etails and economies of my improved golf ball will definitely appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined .in-the claims.
A golf ball embodying the features of my improvements is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a golf ball embodying the features of my invention, only a portion of the-recessesin the surface being shown.
Flg. 2 -1s an enlarged fragmentary plan view of one of the recesses.
on line 33 of Figs. 1 and 2.
Referring to the drawing, the spherical surface 1 of the ball 2 is provided with a multiplicity of an-nularrecesses 3 arranged closely but having a substantial portion of the peripheral surface of the ball between them as is illustrated in Fig. 1. These recesses in the preferred embodiment as illustrated have concavely curved outer walls 4 .and convexly curved inner walls 5. the same being in effect a concaved recess with a central spherically curved projection 6, the crown of which lies in the spherical surface of the ball as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The annular channels thus provided are of an approximate V cross section.
By providing concavely curved outer walls tions 7 between the recesses have a uniformly increasing thickness with the result that the impact of a club is effectively transmitted from the surface of the ball to the body thereof.
My improved golf balls are accurate in flight and also in putting or rolling along the surface of the ground.
Having thusdescribe'd my invention. what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is:
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary section.
and convexly curved 'inner walls, the 'por 7 my I hand. I
1. A golf ball, the spherical surface of which is provided with annular recesses, the outer walls of which are concavely curved and the inner walls of which are convexly curved, the crowns of the convex-1y curved" portions lying in the peripheral surface of the ball, said recesses being arranged. closely but having substantial portions of the spherical surface of the ball between them.
7 2. A golf ball, the spherical'surface of which is provided with annular recesses, the portions within the recesses being. spherically curved and with their crowns lying in the peripheral surface of the ball, said recesses being arranged closel but having substantial portions of the sp erical surface of the ball between them. I
A golf ball. the spherical surface of which is provided with annular recesses, the outer walls of which are concavely curved, the tops of the portions within the recesses lying in the spherical surface of the ball.
4. A golf ball, the spherical surface of which is provided with annular recesses, the inner and outer walls of which are curved from the spherical surface of the ball to the bottoms of the recesses.
5. A 'golf ball, the spherical surface ofv which is provided with annular recesses having concavely curved outer walls and con- .vexlv curved inner walls.
which is provided with concave recesses having centrally disposed convexly curved projections, the crownsof which lie in the peripheral surface of the ball., In'witnessl whereof I have hereunto set-- WALTER HAGEN.
