VUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

Application filed October 18, 1927. Serial No. 226,854.
Ourinvention relates to new and usefulimprovements in a roller form of massage apparatus adapted for hand use on a .human body whereby persons may perform a thorough massaging of themselves without any help.
The ob]ect 0f the invention is to provi' e a roller form of massage device `having suitable handles whereby it may be manipulated. to good advantage.- And, further to include l a series of relatively soft rubber rolls, of like construction, each having co-operating means for acting upon the skin of the patient and whereby pressure may be exerted and relieved, followed by suctions and skin prick-v 'ling in a manner to produce a pleasant irritation of the skin and cause a circulation and reaction of blood near the surface.
A further Objectis to provide a massageY roller adapted for self use and which can be used by one or both hands of the operator in a manner to reach any part of the body effectively.
`llVith these and other objects in view, the invention resides and consists in the const-ruction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and
minor details of construction within-the scope 'of the claims may be resorted tol without departure from the spirit, or sacricing any of the advantages of the invention.
Similar characters of reference denote like or corresponding parts throughout the sev-J eral figures of the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and upon which-,
Fig. 1 shows a side elevation, partly in section, of our improved massage roller.
Fig. 2 is a crossfsectional view through one of the rolls taken on line 22 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a somewhat similar cross-sectional 45 view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Referring in detail tothe characters of reference marked upon the drawings, 5-5
represent oppositely disposed handles by means of which the massage roll is manipu- 1ated,the said handles being secured to opposite end portions of straight rod 6 that forms a spindle upon which the several rolls 7 turn. These rolls may be substantially alike in construction and are positioned in spaced relation side b sideupon the spindle, washers 8 being pre erably used upon the spindle between the rolls, and washers 9 are employed 4 between the end rolls and the inner ends of handles 5 as is clearly shown-in Fig. 1. The rolls 7, before mentioned, are preferl ably formed of comparatively soft rubber and are each mounted upon a short central metal bearing sleeve 10 which is sized to receive and turn upon the spindle 6 as Athe roller is moved forward or backward, as in use. The several rolls are therefore,.free to operate independ-` ently according to the method-0f using the same and obviously the results, in use, depend somewhat upon the amount of force applied in the operation.
Referring more specifically to the formationof the rolls 7 it will be noted that they are of a general roll shape, and include a body portion that is secured on the bearing sleeve heretofore mentioned, and has an annular operating surface which for the most p art is covered with a series of small outwardlfy projecting conical-shapedl tits 11, that are ormed integral with and of the rubber of the rolls. These rolls further include an annular series of pressing bowls 12 having a raised annular edge or lip 13 formed around the outer end portion. These raised projections, as will be seen, are somewhat longer than the tits before mentioned, So as to be lfctively compressed when rolled against a A further series of sucking bowls 14, (see Figs. 1 and 2) are formed in the peripheral surface of the rolls 4adjacent to and at each side of the pressing bowls before mentioned. The bowls are also rovided around their mouths with a raise edge or Vlip 15 which being formed of soft rubber readily compresses and conforms to the surface of the skin thereby 'insuring the desired engagement and efect. Ports 16 serve to connect the side sucking bowl with the pressingbowls 12 and whereby each ofthe pressing bowls are connected with two side sucking bowls for the purpose of permitting air to pass back and forth therethrough and from one bowl'to another. .These bowls 12 and 14 each form a radial hole in the roll which serves as an air shaft, `the Vair shaft of the central or pressing bowl being longer lthan that of the suction bowl. The three aligned holes are therefore connected one with the other so that wheny the central one is compressed, which naturally hap ens when the roller is applied, since their ips are lon er, the air will be forced therefrom throng the ports bowls, thereby producing a flow of air in andl out of the suction bowls.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that the several rolls are mounted to turn either collectively or independently and each operate independently, so far as its application is concerned. The bowls, as arranged, are laid vout in series of three, each series comprising sion in the manner hereinbefore described.
Having thusI described our invention, what .We claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A massage instrument comprising a supporting spindle provided with handles, rolls rotatably supported thereon, a series of pressing bowls the inlets of which are formed in the periphery of the rolls and having raised annular lips around their outer ends, a series of sucking bowls also arranged in the face of the rolls and having projected annular lip portions, and ports connecting the pressing bowls and the sucking bowls.
2. A 'massage instrument comprising a supporting spindle provided with han les,
rolls rotatably supported thereon, a series of pressing bowls the` inlets of which are formed in the periphery of the rolls and having raised annular lips' around their outer ends, a series of sucking bowls also arranged in the face of the rolls and having projected annular lips, the lips of the pressing bowls extending out further than the lips of the sucking bowls, and ports connecting the pressing'bowls and the sucking bowls.
3. A massage instrument comprising a supporting spindle provided with han les, resilient rolls rotatably supported thereon, a series of pressing bowls the inlets of which are formed in the periphery of the roll and having raised annular lips formed around their outer end portions, a series of sucking bowls also arranged in the face of the roll and having raised annular lips, ports connecting the pressing bowls and the suc-kin bowls, and a series of outwardly rojected flexible tits formed on the surface ,ofp the rolls between the said bowls.
4. A massage instrument comprising a supporting spindle provided with handles, rolls rotatably supported thereon, a series of radially positioned pressing bowls formed in the rolls, sucking bowls formed on either side of the pressing bowls and in alignment therewith, ports leading from the pressing bowls to the sucking bowls, a series of flexible tits on the face of the roll, and a resilient massage Fairfield and State of Connecticut this 15th day of Oct. A. D. 1927.
