This invention relates to a combined cigarette and vanity case particularly adapted for use by a swimmer or surf bather.

A general object of the invention is to provide an article of the t pe referred to which is constructed for attac ment to the clothing of a swimmer in a convenient position to expose a mirror when the cover is opened and to provide a securely watertight constructlon I when the cover is closed.

A feature of the invention resides in the division of the body portion of the container into two compartments through the use of a toilet comb utilized as a partition forming member.

Another feature of the invention resides in the provision of a lockin pin or other attaching device on the base 0 the container adjacent the forward edge thereof whereby when the container is suspended from the wearers clothing, the cover member takes a position, when open, to bring a mirror mounted therein into the most favorable position for use.

SI Another feature of the invention resides in the use of an improved latch or fastening device for the cover of the case by means of which a double lockingfunction is obtained to insure a watertight relation of the parts.

ei'erring to the drawings for a more detailed description of the invention, a comb ned cigarette and vanity case is shown in which a rectangular body portion 5 is fitted on one of its long edges with a hinged cover member 6. The case is preferably formed of sheet metal of a non-corroding character and is attractively finished and desi ned. The corners and edges are rounded as at and 8 and the cover member is preferably provided with some form of ornamental design, as at 8. In order to provide a watertight construction of the device in order to enable its use by swimmers or surf bathers the body portion 5 of the case is lined with arelativelythick sheet 9 of moulded rubber or the like having a groove 10 formed in the upper edge thereof throughout its entire length. In like manner the cover member 6 is lined with a body of rubber 11 having a head 12 formed along the lower edge thereof for interengagment with the groove 10 in the body lining member 9. The lining members 9 and 11 are adhesively connected to the inner surfaces of the body members 5 and 6 respectively and I may also utilize similar material for lining the bottom of the case as at 13 and the inside of the cover as at 14. The lining of the entire surface of the container is beneficial in that it provides stabilit for the relatively thin sheet metal walls an produces a device for the purpose in which the top and bottom walls are not inclined to buckle under pres- 100 sure. In order to lock the cover member 6 in firmly closed and watertight relation to the body portion 5, a latching device 15 is provided which is arranged to provide a double latching effect. In order to achieve this use- 105 ful result, the latch 15 is provided with a portion 16 permanently attached to the forward surface of the lid 6 and provided with an inwardly extendin locking detent 17 adapted to snap into a loc 'ng recess 18 formed in the 110 outer surface of the forward wall of the body portion 5 when the lid member is pressed into closed position to bring the bead of the cover lining 11 into engagement with the groove of the body lining member 9. The latch member 15 also includes a hasp member 19 hinged at 20 to the lower extremity of the latch portion 10. The hinged hasp member 19 is provided with an opening 21 adapted. to I'GR'GlVB a button 22 provided on the forward face of the container body portion 5 and to pass beneath the head of the button to thereby lirmly lock the hasp member into engagement with the forward wall of the body portion 5.

With this construction, it will be su h that the hinged hasp member 19 can be utilized as a handle portion to be used in drawing the portion 16 into position to permit the locking detent 17 to snap into the locking recess 18. Following the engagement of the locking detent 17 with the locking recess, the hinged hasp member 19 is pressed inwardly to cause the head of the button 22 to pass through the opening 21 and latch the hasp member in securely locked position.

With this latching construction, it will be clear that a watertight joint is established between the cover member 6 and the body portion 5 of the container so that water cannot enter the case under any conditions, there by permitting the case to be used by a bather or swimmer taking part in aquatic sports.

In order to facilitate the use of a mirror 23 housed within the cover member 6, a pin 24 is attached to the bottom surface of the body portion 5 adjacent the forward edge thereof. The mounting of the pin or other at taching means in this position provides for the suspension of the case from the garments of the user in a position to facilitate the free use of the mirror. This sition of the parts is indicated clearly in Fig. 1 of the drawing in which the cover member 6 is swung outwardly and downwardly to its closed osition to enable the user to look downwar 1y into the mirror without any inconvenience.

The container may be used to hold nu- ;merous small objects. For convenience the body portion 5 of the container is divided into two compartments 25 and 26 by means of a small comb 27 which is fitted to grooves 28 formed in the o posite end walls of the container to there provide a partition forming member. Tlie compartments 25 and 26 lend themselves to use in holding cigarettes 29 or similarly shaped articles such as the lipstick container 30 or an e ebrow pencil 31. A. calendar 32 may be lace in the bottom of the body ortion 5 of t e container and it will be seen t at the case forms a convenient re ceptacle also for a bathhouse key.

A modified form of latch construction is shown in Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawing wherein instead of making use of a locking detent 17 and a recess 18, a detent 33 is provided on the forward wall of the container and is adapted to be received in an opening 34 formed in the rigid portion 35 of the latch. The hinged hasp portion 36 of the latch fol lows the construction of the hasp member 19 already described.

The container thus provided may be formed of bakclite, cbonite, or other materials instead of sheet metal, if desired. W'hcn sheet metal is used, the outer surface may be coated with any desired impervious material, such as lacquer, bakelite, duco or other similar materials, which not only protect the surface covered thereby but present an attractive appearance. It will also be clear that the container may be utilized to hold other small objects, such as coins, matches, or the like. In addition, the container may be formed of a size convenient to be used by men and adapted for use solely as a cigarette case.

What I claim is 1. In a combined cigarette and vanity case, a container, a hinged cover for the container, lining members for the container and cover walls formed of yieldable material and having cooperating ead and groove edges cooperating to form a water tight joint substantially in the plane of meeting of the containcr and cover, whereb when the cover is closed the container will be substantially water tight.

2. In a combined cigarette and vanity case, a rectangular container member having a cover member hinged thereto along one of the longer edges thereof, lining members for the container and cover members formed of resilient material, the edge of the container lining member being provided throughout'its length with a groove and the edge of the cover lining member being rovided with a bead member formed to fit t e groove in the container lininglmember, and a latch member adapted to latc the cover member in closed position.

3. In a combined cigarette and vanity case, a rectangular container member formed of sheet material and having a cover member hinged to a longer side thereof to have edge to edge engagement therewith, lining members for the container and cover members formed of resilient material, the abuttin edges of the linin members being provided with cooperating ead and groove members, and a spring latch member carried by the cover member, said container member and the latch member having cooperating detent and recess members.

4. In a combined cigarette and vanity case, a rectangular container member formed of sheet material and having a cover member hinged to a long side thereof, lining members for the container and cover members havin bead and groove members formed in the a utting edges thereof, a spring latch member carried by the cover member and sheet metal and having a cover member hinged to one of the longer edges thereof, a mirror mounted in the cover member, lining members for the container and cover members formed of resilient material, the abutting edges of the linin members being provided with cooperating head and groove members, and a fastening device attached to the base of the container adjacent the forward edge thereof, whereby when the container is attached by means of the fastening means to CERTIFICATE Patent No. 1,692, 041.

6. In a comblned cigarette and vanity case, a rectangular container member formed of sheet metal and having a cover member hinged to one of the longer edges thereof, means for providing a watertight joint between the cover member and the body of the container, a lockin pin attached to the base of the container adjacent the forward edge thereof, a mirror mounted in the cover member, opposite surfaces of the interior of the container being provided with grooves formed to receive a comb and cause the comb to serve as a compartment partitioning member, and a latch member adapted to lock the cover in watertight relation to the body of the container.
