N.PETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPMER. WASHINGTON.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY vT. ANTHONY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO E. AND HVT.
ANTHONY & CO., OF' SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PHOTOGRAPH-ALBUMS.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 170,042, dated November 16,1875; application filed August 20, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known` that I, HENRY T. ANTHONY, of the city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Photograph-A1- bums, of which the following is a specification:
Photograph albums have, been made of leaves of' thick paste or straw boards, with openings cut out of a size to receive the cardpictures placed back to back, and at each side of the leaf there are sheets of paper with openings smaller than .that in the leaf, so as to retain the photographic or other cards, and form borders or mats around the same. These sheets of paper are very liable to be torn in inserting or Withdrawin g the card-pictures; besides this, the leaves are liable to be injured at theback, because the strip of muslin or leather used to unite one leaf to the next intervenes between the pasteboard and paper at the back edge, and either increases the thickness at the back, or else the pasteboard has to be reduced in thickness, and the parts are liable to separate.
My invention is made for strengthening the paper mat surrounding the picture, and for strengthening the binding at the back.
I` employ the ordinary leaves of pasteboard or straw-board a, with the opening therein of a size adapted to receive the picture, and at `each side thereof I attach a nlat formed of a at the back of such sheet a.
The cloth-lined paper is of a size sufficient' to be folded at d, as seen in the section, Fig. 2, and the cloth side of the cloth-lined paper is glued to the respective faces ot' the sheets a a, so that said sheet of cloth-lined paper unites the two sheets at a, and at d forms the hinge between them to allow the sheets to open at this point as the album is opened.
In some instances a back strip or guard, e, is applied to each leaf, so that there may be a second hinge to each, as at `f, (see Figs. l and 3,) whereby the strain upon the binding at the back of the book is lessened. The clothlined paper makes very strong hinges at both the back and between the guard and leaf, less- V ening the labor in manufacture, and rendering it unnecessary to use separate strips.
The leaves of av photographic album, made with cloth-lined paper at each 'side of the straw-board or pasteboard, is a new article of manufacture, possessing great utility. The album is much stronger than those before made, because the cloth-lined paper is continuous from the edge of one sheet to the edge of the next. The sheets are uniform in thickness throughout, and the labor now usual of applying separate hinge-strips at the back, and the cost of so doing, are avoided.
I claim as my inventione The photograph -album sheets, united together by the sheet of clothlined paper, that is folded, and forms both the back hinge and the faces of the adjacent pasteboa-rd bodies, as set forth.
Signed by me this 17 th day of August, 1875.
H. T. ANTHONY.
