rlhis invention relates to means for imparting reeiprocatory movement to a slidable member, such as a plunger carrier, and while the invention particularly adapted yto apparatus tor vpacking granulated or coinminuted material, such as cork with a binding material, into stick form, it is also applicable to other apparatus, and it is the object of the invention to provide means to impart to a slidable member reciprocatory movement in series ot' successively decreasing e1;- tent, and to provide means tor this purposey which is simple in construction and etlicient in operation.
In carrying out the invention l have illustrated the same as embodied in apparatus tor packing comminuted cork into stick vtorni wherein a tube or series of tubes is positioned by a carrier and support therefor with t ie opposite ends relative to material carrying pockets to which material is ted trom a hopper or hoppers, and 4rom which pockets the material is delivered and packed into opposite ends ot a tube or tubes as successive increments by a plunger or plungers mounted in reciprocatory carriers inline with the material carrying pockets, the tube carrier being adapted to be operated after a series ot successive movements have been imparted to the plunger carriers and the tube or tubes illed with comminuted material to advance the illed tubes and position further tribes to be lilled relative to the material carrying pockets. y

l have illustrated my invention in connection with apparatus for packing granulated or comminuted .cork mixed with a binder into tubes to 'term sticks from which disks are sliced to constitute the lining of closure caps for receptacles as described and illustrated in Patent No. 1.,-lf7758 dated December 11, 1923, wherein a series ot tubes l-l are supported at the opposite ends by a turret comprising a pair ot wheels 15 having recesses disposed about the periphery and mounted in spaced relation upon a rotatable shaft 16, and by means of which support the tubes-seated in the peripheral recesses are positioned with the ends in line with pockets 17 arranger.. in an arc of a circle coinciding with the tube receiving recesses in the turret wheels, said pockets being disposed below hopper outlets 18 to receive material therefrom. Having thus described my invention claim:
l. rlhe combination of a slidable plunger carrier, a rotatable and reciprocatory member arranged With circularly disposed stepped' faces, an oscillatory lever t reciprocate said member, and means to rotate said member one stepped face'distance upon each reciprocatory movement thereof, said stepped face member being arranged with means to cooperate With the plunger carrier to move the same to a predetermined position inv one direction, and the stepped faces of said member adapted to successively co-operate with the plunger carrier to move the same distances of successive variable extent in the opposite direction.
2. The combination of a slidably mounted plunger carrier, and means to impart movement of successive variable extent to said carrier in one direction from a position of rest, comprising a rotatable and reciprocatory member arranged with circularly dis posed stepped faces adapted for successive connection with the plunger carrier in the movement of said memberin one direction and transmit said movement to the carrier, and said member arranged with means to connect said member with and transmit the return movement thereof to and return the carrier to position of rest, and means to rotate said member a stepped face distance upon each reciprocation thereof.
3. Plunger carrier reciprocating means as claimed in claim Q', wherein the stepped face member comprises a cylinder With the stepped faces disposed longitudinally thereof and mounted to have movement in the plane of movement of plunger carrier.

Plunger carrier reciprocating means as claimed in claim 2, wherein the stepped face member comprises a cylinder With the stepped faces disposed longitudinally thereof and mounted to have movement in the plane of movement of the plunger carrier, a mounting sleeve on which the cylinder is fixed, a collar 'lined on the sleeve in opposed and spaced relation to the stepped faces of the cylinder, and an abutment fixed to the plunger carrier interposed between the stepped faces of the cylinder and collar and adapted for engagement therewith to connect and transmit the reciprocatory movement of the cylinder to the carrier.
5. ln plunger carrier reciprocating means as claimed in claim 2, an oscillatory lever having a pivotal link connection with the stepped face memberv and operative to reciprocate the latter and'means to oscillatc the lever.

'lflunger carrier reciprocating means as claimed .in claim 2, wherein the means to rotate the stepped face member comprises a Geneva gearing, one member o.l` \vhich is connected with. the stepped face member and other member mounted on a driver' to rotate therewith and have axial movement thereon, and means to connect said latter Geneva gear member with the stepped face member to transmit the reciprocatory movement thereof to said Geneva gear member and maintain the same in operative connection with the Geneva gear member connected to the stepped facing member.
7. Plunger carrier reciprocating means as claimed in claim 2, wherein the means to rotate the stepped face member comprises a vWheel fixed to said member to participate in the rotative and reciprocatory movement thereof, said Wheel having circumferentially spaced, toothed and intervening curved sections, a second'Wheel having a toothed section adapted to mesh upon successive revolutions thereof with the s ccessive tooth secrtion of the first Wheel, and the plane peripheral portion of said second Wheel to ride over the curved sections of the i'irst Wheel and hold said latter while against rotative movement, a. drive shaft upon which said second Wheel is mounted to rotate with and. have4 movement of the latter to said second Wheelg and maintain the same in operative connection With the first Wheel.
8.
