OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR-RTO LAVIYERS co i -oci nsmnn, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF HOLDER F03 THE BjINDINGS orBooKs FOR SUPPLEMENTAL SHEETS.
Application filed A rn 25,
The object of this inventionis to provide a new and improved holder for the bindlngs of books so that su Jplemental sheets maybe added to the book from timerto time and- Figure=2 is a section on the line 2*,"2 of v Figure 1.
1 it in-section.
' form of the it apartfor thepurpose V Figure 3 isa detail view of the supplement of sheets as they will be made to be attached to the book covershown in Figure l.
Figure 4isan enlargement of the upper portion of the book cover shown in Figure 1, the cover being partly broken away so as to show the pocket andthe cover back of is an enlargement of "a modified upper portion of the book cover lIlWhiCh the cloth covering material is folded over at the top with a widev margin toform the pocket for holding the backing of the supplemental sheets, the cover belng partly broken away to show the assembly of the parts. '7 p In the drawings like reference numerals indicate like parts. v
F igure o Books of reference when printed and V bound in the usual way out of, date sooner. or later, and in such case itis desirable to provide some meansby which -the book can be kept up to date by the addition of extra printed pages thereto. The binding of books is usually sewed and fastened together ina way that does not permit: the taking of thereto. Therefore, it is desirable to provide means by which: extra supplemental pages maybe added to a book without disturbing the binding thereof, and'yet make the supplemental pages an integral part of thebook.
. fastened to-the outside of adding pages 1928. Serial No. 272,783.
Forthis purpose'I bind the bookin the ordinary way. That is, sew the leaves to-f attach the leavesso assembled and gether and sewed to the cover in the usual way. The invention lies moreespecially' in the cover of the book in which reference numeral 1 indicates the-board of thecoverz j Along the upper edge of the board of the cover I paste a reinforcing strip 2, which reinforcing strip is not attached to the board in the intermediate section thereof between the dotted lines 3 andt butiis attached) to the-board: at both ends on the-outsideof said The covering cloth is then of the board l of the 7 maybe desired and the margin thereof is turned over the upper" dotted lines;
cover by glue or pasteas edge of the board. This margin of the cloth more or less overlaps the reinforcing strip 2, and is firmly pasted or gluedthereto. The fly sheet 7 is then pasted on the inside of" the board completely coveringfthe board from.
the top to the bottom thereof and overlapping both the reinforcing strip 2 and the -margin of the cloth covering material 5. I
then cut thejflysheet 7 along the lower edge of the reinforcingjstrip2 between the dotted lines 3' and-4t and as the reinforcing has not been vfastened tothe board strip 2 of the the cut line.
formed in the pocket, both pockets on which. opens along edge ofthe cover is to make a the board the cover in the sa'me'way except that the cloth-Sis extended down to the lower edge of t-hereinforcing strip 2 thereby making the reinforcing strip just that much stronger. The fly sheet 7 covers theboard 1 ofthe cover together with that has been turned over the edge 7 cover but in both cases astrip of material 2is interposed between-the cloth fabric and the v "fly sheet on theone side, and the board 1 of the cover on'the other side "so that-these parts will not be pasted directlyto the board of the 100 and lowerymargin of the cover to: form a pocket for the reception of cover but will be left detached far enough along the upper the backing of'the supplemental sheets;
the cloth-covering material 5 j 4 ofthe :cover along this line a pocket is left thereby, The lower same way s5 appearing atthe' top and bottom of Fig. 2'.
In Figure5 I form the upper and lower .edge of The supplemental'sheets ll are fastened to; v if i gether in any way that may be desired as for example by stapling and to the supplement so The backing card is sprung shoulders and bottom of the cover so formed is also fastened the backing card 12 which is of standard form and size, and is made with reference .to the pockets above .described to be used in said pockets. For this purpose the backing card is cut away to form at 18" and 14 from which the backing card extends up and down to points 15 and 16. The backing card then tapers for ward to the corners 17 and 18. The forward edge 19 of the backing card is substantially parallel with the rear edge 20. This backing card isyalways fastened to the supplemental sheets preferably by the publisher and the owner of the book inserts the upper-corner 15 into the upper pocket her 16 into the lower. pocket, the upper-and and the lower corlower edges of the "card. easily following the corners into place in the pockets and thus make positive engagement therewith. lhe portions of the backing car-d above the shoul der 13 and below the shoulder 14: make an ample engagement with the pockets at the top as to firmly hold the supplement in engagement therewith. for the purpose of making the ends thereof engage withthe pockets in the cover, but when the backing card is in engagement with the pockets it flattens out and pushes the ends into the pockets and holds the supplement firmly to the cover. The backing card to secure this result is made preferably of stiff material such v as tag board.
I claim:
1. A binding for a book supplement therefor comprising a cover and pockets at the top and bottom of said cover, said pocket-s opening toward the middle of the cover, a supplement for saidbook eomprising a plurality of pages with a backing card therefor,
the upper and lower ends of said card being adapted to engage in it enters the pockets.
ther
adapted to engage-in said pockets to hold the supplement in place.
2. A binding for a book and supplement therefor comprising a cover and pockets at the top and bottom of said cover, said pockets opening toward the middle of the cover, a supplement for said book comprising a plurality of pages with a backing card therefor. the upper and lower ends of said card being said pockets to hold the supplement in place, said backing card having itseorners at the rear edge cut away to reduce the width of the backing card where 3. A binding for a book and supplement therefor comprising a cover, a strip extending along the top and bottom or the inside Yof the cover, the ends of the strip being pasted thereto, the intermediate part of the strip being left loose therefrom to form pockets at the top and bottom of the cover. 7
4. A binding for a book and supplement or comprising a cover and strips-ms tent. n along the top and bottom ot he inside of the cover, the ends oft-he sti'ps being pasted thereto to form pockets at the top and bottom of said cover said pockets openadapted to engage in said pockets to hold a plurality card being the 1m toward the middle of the cover, a sup-' so I thmefo-r the r supplement in place a covering-cloth for said 1 cot-er said cloth overlapping said strip and reinforcing it, a fly sheet pasted over the inside of the cover and overlapping said strip and said covering cloth, said sheet being slit along the inner edges of the loose the strips to nnoover the PCB}; the strips.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
