NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
l THOMAS BINGHAM, PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FAUCETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 172,075, dated January 11, 1876; application filed J uly'2, 1875.
I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, in which- I Figures 1 and 2 are vertical longitudinal sections of my invention.
' This invention has relation to the means for giving ventage to ale and beer casks, and drawing off their contents; and it consists in the construction of a faucet, whereby, through the peculiar adjustment of the plug, air is admitted to the cask, andsimnltaneonsly the liquor permitted to escape; also, whereby, when the liquorisA flat, it may be drawn in the form of a jet, and mixed with air, so as to create foam. v
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A designates the body of the faucet; B, the bulb formed with the nozzle a, cylinder b, and stu G represents the faucet-bore, and D the vent-channel, ruiming lengthwise of the body A,- parallel with the bore, and communicating, by an opening in the faucetwall,
with a bent tube, D', leading upward and for` ward to the cylinder b. E designates the plug stem, having near its lower end a conical valve or plug, E', and above the latter a series of annular' ridges, F, above and below which, respectively, the parts e f of the stem The chamber G of the bulb terminates in or `converges near its-lower` end,to form a conical seat for the reception of the shoulder E. his a channel in the point f of the plug-stem, passing through the `center, and terminating in the side toward the bore C. h is channel running lengthwise of,
and formed in, the neck e of the plug-stem, and communicating by lateral branches with the chamber G.
' Fig. 1 in the drawing shows the faucet closed. To ope-n the same, the plug is raised, as shown in Fig. 2, until the upper branch of the channel h is above the cap of the stuffing-box, or outside the chamber G, whereupon air rushes into the latter, and thence, through the ventchannel, enters the cask. At the same time,
- the plug or valve E being lifted above the faucet-bore, the liquor escapes downward through the nozzle.
By the closing of the plug, a current of air and-liquid is caused to iow downward through the agency of the channeled point h, causing the liquid to foam when drawn.
The object of the creased packing or annular ridges F isv to prevent the liquid from backing up toward the vent-opening.
Having described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The faucet-body A, having the longitudinal vent-channel D, in combination with the chambered plug-stem E, having the solid plug or valve E', plug barrel or bulb B, and veilttube D', substantially as shown and described.
2. In a combined faucet and vent, a vertically-adjustable chambered plug-stem, having a solid valve-plug, E,.for controlling simultaneously the admission of air and escape of liquid, substantially as described.
The vertically-adjustable faucet plugstem E, provided with the tapering solid plug or valve E', and having a channeled depending point, f, as and for the purpose set forth. In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 21st day of June, 1875.
