t EY ATTORNEY,
WITNESS:
Patented Sept. 10, 1929.
UNITED STATES JOSEPH DE BARTOLO, OF BROOKLYN, NW YORK.
COMB.
Application tiled June 11,
This invention relates to improvements in combs and particularly to adjustable fine tooth combs.
The primary object of the invention resides in a comb embodying a. pair of flat comb sections fitting one against the other and which may be adjusted relative to each other to vary the distance between the teeth whereby either a very coarse, or very line comb may be provided for combing the hair under various conditions.
Another object is the provision of an adjustable comb which may be adjusted to provide coarse teeth for normal combing of the hair, or to provide close or fine teeth to remove foreign substances, such as dandrutf and nits therefrom.'
A further object is to provide an adjustable comb embodying a pair of comb sections, and an eccentric manipulating member` operable for adjusting one section with respect to the other to vary the space between the teeth thereof.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel construction and combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features of which are hereinafter fully described, are particularlyT pointed out in the appended claims, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved comb showing a coarse comb in full lines and an adjusted position to provide a fine comb in dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line 3 3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a detail perspective view of the eccentric member.
Referring to the drawing by reference characters, the numeral 10 designates my improved adjustable comb in its entirety, which includes a pair of flat blades or comb sections 11 and 12 having equi-distantly spaced teeth 13 and 14 respectively along their opposed longitudinal edges. The body of the section 12 is provided with slots 15 into which lugs 16 extend from the inner face of the section 11. The slots 15 are of 1928. Serial No. 284,524.
such length as-to allowthe comb section 12 to be shifted longitudinally to positiony the teeth 13 and 14 in perfectalignment, or to a position wherein the teeth of one section are staggered withrespect to the teeth of the other section to close up the spaces between the teeth to produce a fine tooth comb.
The section 1 1 .is provided with a central opening 16 through which the threaded shank of a headed bolt 17 extends. The bolt freely receives a manipulating member 18 having an eccentric 19 on the inner side thereof and which is of a thickness equal .to the thickness of the comb section 12 to snugly lit within the walls of an opening 20 provided therein and which is eccentric with respect to the aXis of the bolt opening 16 in the section 11. It will be evident that by imparting turning movement to the manipulating member 18, the comb section 12 may be shifted longitudinally in opposite directions to accurately adjust the teeth of the comb sections with respect to each other.
For clamping' the manipulating member and comb sections in an adjusted position, I provide a nut 21 which is threaded to the shank of the bolt 17y and which is screwed tight against the manipulating member. The nut 21 is loosened when making an adjustment to free the member 18 to allow turning thereof.
The comb section 11 is slightly longer than the comb section 12 to prevent its ex tension beyond the same when in an adjusted position as shown in dotted lines in Figure 1 of the drawing.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that when the comb section 12 is adjusted to the limit of its movement in one direction, the teeth 13 and lllare in alignment, but when adjusted to the limit of its movement in an opposite direction, the same are in staggered relation as shown in dotted lines in Figure 1. Any intermediate position may be had by the actuation of the adjusting member.
lVhile I have described what I deem to be the most desirable embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that many of the details may be varied without in any way departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore do not limit myself to the exact details of construction herein set forth nor to anything less than the Whole of my invention limited only by the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is l. An adjustable comb Comprising a pair of flat comb sections slidable one upon the other, actuating means for adjusting one of said comb sections longitudinally of the other, and clamping means for holding said actuating means in an adjusted position.
2. A comb comprising a pair of flat comb sections slidable one upon the other, actuating means for adjusting one of said comb sections longitudinally of the other, said actuating means including a turnable eccen.
tric member engaging one ot said comb sections, and clamping means for holding said actuating means in an adjustedposition.
3. A comb comprising a pair of comb sections having roWs of teeth along their longitudinal edges, said comb sections fitting one against the other and relatively movable, stop means for limiting movement of said comb sections in opposite directions, a threaded bolt freely passing through said comb sections, an actuating member turn- .ably mounted on said bolt, an eccentric on said actuating member fitting into an eccentric opening in one of said comb sections, whereby turning of said actuating member will impart sliding movement to one of said comb sections with respect to the other to ladjust the rows of teeth relative to eachy other, and a clamping nut threaded on said bolt for locking said actuating member in an adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I have aiiixed my signature.
JOSEPH DE BARTOLO.
