Description

H. ESTEROW Dec. 3, 1929.
CIGARLIGHTER Filed May 11. 1928 awuemtoz Patented Dec. 3, 1929 UNITED STATES HARRY ESTEROW, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CIGAR LIGHTER Application filed May 11 1928. Serial No. 276,892.
This invention relates to an improvement in cigar lighters and has for its object to provide an article of this character which shall be combined with a watch.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combined cigar lighter and watch whose details of construction are such that waste space will be utilized so that the finished article will be extremely compact and of excellent appearance.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combination of the character mentioned which will not only present a hand some appearance but which will satisfactorily combine the good qualities of a lighter and watch without in any way increasing the thickness or bulk of the ordinary type of lighter.
With these objects and such other objects as may hereinafter appear in view, I have devised the particular arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved combined lighter and watch;
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the watch supporting door in open position;
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows; and
Figure 4 is a sectional view of the door and the watch movement retaining flange.
Throughout the various views of the drawing, similar reference characters designate similar parts.
In the embodiment of my invention disclosed in the accompanying drawing, 1 indicates the fuel containing reservoir which may be of any suitable shape and which is preferably of flat, elongated form. The opposite ends of this reservoir 1 are closed by affixed plates 2 and 3 which are preferably of such size that they slightly project beyond the sides of the reservoir 1. The top plate 2 has on its upper face the usual lighter instrumentalities which consist of a tubular member 5 which contains pyrophoric material.
This member 5 also contains a sparking wheel not shown and supports a thumb wheel 6.
An adjusting screw 8 is provided in one end of the member 5 and an extinguishing cap 7 is provided also upon one end of a bar not shown and pivoted in a-standard 12.
The bottom plate 3 is recessed to receive a closure plug 4: through which the reservoir may be filled with liquid fuel that saturates absorbent cotton 13 usually contained within the reservoir chamber.
In the front wall of the reservoir 1 is provided a depression 14 having a narrowed offset portion 15. This depression or pocket 14 is normally covered by a hinged door 16 that has one of its longitudinal edges curled or rolled as at 17 to form a hinge bearing for a hinge pin 18 that extends between and connects the two plates 1 and 3.
The door 16 is provided on its inner face with a continuous flange 19 that has several inwardly pressed proj ections 20 that snap into engagement with complementary recesses 21 formed in the case of a watch movement 22.
The watch movement 22 is provided with a dial 23 that projects through an opening 24 in the door 16. The dial is covered by a watch crystal 25 held in a bezel 26 formed on the outside of the door 16. i
The watch movement 22 is so located within the flange 19 that when the door is closed, the movement will fit within the pocket or depression 14 in the front wall of the reservoir 1. If desired, the pocket or depression 14 may be made of a size considerably greater than the size of the watch movement case so that the extra space formed in said depression can be utilized for holding extra wicks and pieces of the pyrophoric igniting substance. The watch movement is provided with a winding stem 27 that has a head 28 aflixed on'it.
Located in registration with said head 28 is an aperture 29 in the door 16 so that a portion of the head 28 may project out of the. same, as disclosed in Figures 1 and 2 to permit the watch to be wound without opening the door. The catch for the door is provided in the form of a tongue 30 that has a proj ec tion 31 which snaps into engagement with a depression 32 formed in one side of the recess 15.
From the foregoing, the construction and use of my improved lighter and Watch will be readily understood. The lighter is of course used in the conventional way and it will be seen that the Watch is so positioned that its face is located on the side of the lighter that is nearest to the user when the lighter is being used.
Through the construction provided, the watch may be readily wound without opening the door. This is of some importance since the pocket or depression 14 can be used for containing extra wicks or pieces of pyrophoric material and these articles will not inadvertentlyit'all out since it is not necessary to open the 'door unless desired when windingithe watch.
To facilitate the opening of the door, I provide said door with a projecting tongue portion 33 that extends slightly beyond the edge of the reservoir 1 so that the finger nail may be engaged under said tongue to swing the door open as disclosed in Figure 2.
The manner in which the watch movement is held in position that is, by snapping it within a circumferential flange is of considerable importance since the watch movement is held within its own case and is thus entirely dust-proof. .Incidentally, it may be immediately removed by disengaging it from the flange. 19 and a new movement may be promptly inserted should the old one need repairs or adjustment.
Having described one. embodiment of my invention, it is obviousthat the same is not to be restricted thereto, but is broad enoughto cover all structures coming within the scope of the annexed claims. 'VVhat I claim is:
1, In acigar lighter, a fuel reservoir casing, a depression therein for accommodating a watch, a door hinged over said depression, a watch provided with aprojecting winding stem, a flange on the back of the door adapted to. surround and embrace said watch, attachingmeans on said flange for engaging complementary means on the watch for detachably holding said watch within and wholly embraced by the flange, and an opening in the door in alignment with the winding stem in said extension through which the watchwinding stem protrudes.
Signed at the city, county and State of New York, this 10th day of May, 1928.
HARRY ESTEROW.
whereby a portion of said stem protrudes throu h said opening.
. 2. 'n a cigar lighter, a casing having a depression in one of its. side walls, a cover hinged thereover, means on the back of said cover for holding a watch movement, said watch movement having a projecting winding stem, the recess in the casing being provided with a lateral extended part in which said winding stem rests when the casing door is in its closed position over the recess, said cover having an extensionon one of its edges conistituting a cover-raising member, and a slot
