The invention principally consists in a device or attachment adapted to be fitted or secured to a safety razor the said device comprising means for holding a small sponge or piece or sponge, or the equivalent, in such a position that in the action of shaving the face is sponged or wiped by the sponge or equivalent, this sponging or wiping following the movements of the razor blade in shaving.

Further accordingto this invention, the aforesaid device comprises means whereby the position of the sponge holder can be adjusted or varied relative to the razor blade and its cutting edge as may be required.

Further the invention consists in the combination with a safety razor of a device or attachment comprising a holder for a small sponge or piece of sponge, or the equivalent, the said device comprislng means whereby the a position of the said holder and consequently Further according to this invention the aforesaid device or attachment comprises, in combination, a holder for a small sponge or piece of sponge or the like, members or arms carrying the said holder and pivotally connected with means adapted to embrace and tightly grip the handle of the razor, and means whereby the said arms can be adjusted to and held in a position with the sponge holder and sponge in a predetermined operative position relative to the cutting edge of the razor blade, the construction and arrangement being such that the said members or arms can be turned to and held in a position more or less parallel with the handle of the razor, to thereby place the sponge holder and sponge in an operative position, or turned to a position in which the sponge holder and sponge will be out of operative position and clear of the razor blade and its holder.

Further according to this invention, the holder for the sponge or piece of sponge consists of a casing or box-like structure, preferably made of metal, open at one or at both sides and closed at the top or outer side by a plate movable inwardly and outwardly in the said box or casing and guided in its movements therein, the said plate when pressed inwardly of the casing or box serving to squeeze the sponge to free it from water or liquid.

Further features of the invention will be described hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, and set forth in the appended claims.

Fig. 1 is a front elevation and Fig. 2 a side elevation of a safety razor of a well-known type with the device or attachment according to this invention fitted to the razor.

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view showing a detail (hereinafter described) of the box or casing constituting the holder for the piece of sponge or the equivalent.

Figs. 1 and 5 are similar views to Figs. 1 and 2 but show the attachment or device according to the invention applied or fitted to a safety razor of another well-known type.

Fig. 6 is a plan View of part of the device or attachment shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and

Fig. 7 is a plan View of part of the device or attachment shown in Figs. L and 5.

Referring to Figs. 1 to 3 and Fig. 6, 1 is the handle of a safety razor of well-known type sold under the tradename Valet, 2 being the known blade holder, 3 the blade and 4 the known lower support for the razor blade, the said support t having at its forward edge the known safety teeth or project-ions 5.

In the type of razor illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 the blade holder 2 is carried by a shaft or spindle pivotally mounted in the frame or head 8 of the razor, and has associated with it the small intermeshing toothed wheels 6, 6, the wheel 6 being fixed on the end of the shaft or spindle by which the blade holder 2 is carried and the wheel 6 fixed on the corresponding end of another shaft or spindle parallel with and immediately below the aforesaid spindle to which the blade holder 2 is fixed, the said shafts on which the wheels (3, are fixed having their bearings in the upstanding lugs or ends 7 of the frame or head 8 fixed on the end of the handle 1 of the razor; further in this type of razor the support 4 of the razor blade 3 can be given rockin g movements by means of the part or tongue 9, and the said support 4 comprises inturned lugs 10 at either side, the said lugs 10 serving, in the position of the parts shown in the drawings, to prevent the blade holder 2 and blade 3 turning about the axis of the shaft or spindle on which the blade holder and toothed wheel 6 are carried, thus retaining the blade 3 with its cutting edge in proper position for shaving. The arrangements just described are, as is well-known, provided for enabling the razor blade 3 to be cleaned and stropped without removing the blade from the razor.

In the embodiment of the invention illustrated, by way of example only, in the various figures of the drawings, 11 and 11 are members or arms to one end (the upper end as shown) of which there is fixed the sponge holder or box 12 in which the small sponge or piece of sponge 13 is carried; at their opposite ends the members or arms 11, 11 are pivotally attached to a member or cross-bar 14 to which is secured a spring sleeve or clip 15 adapted to be pressed on to and to tightly 1 embrace or grip the handle 1 of the razor as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 4 and 5. As shown the lower ends of the arms 11, 11 are inserted in slots 16 (see Figs. 1 and 6) in the member or cross-bar 14 the arm 11 being pivotally connected with the said cross-bar by means of a small pin or rivet 16 inserted in coinciding holes in the member 14 and arm 11 and fixed in the member or cross-bar 14, while the arm 11 is pivotally connected with the said crossbar 14 by means of a small setscrew 17 in serted in coinciding holes in the member 14 and arm 11 and screwed into the said member 14.

As shown more clearly in Figs. 6 and 7 the slots 16 in the member or cross-bar 14 are out therein as close as practicable to the ends of the said member or cross-bar, so that when the setscrew 17 is screwed tightly home, owing to the thinness of the metal of the end portion 14 of the cross-bar 14 the said end portion will be pressed inwardly so as to clamp the arm 11*, Figs. 1 and 2, or 11, Figs. 4 and 5, to the member or cross-bar 14 and thus hold the arms 11, 11" together with the sponge holder or box 12 and sponge 13 in any position to which they may have been set by turning the arms 11, 11" about the pivots 16 and 17. 'lheposition oi the sponge holder or box 12 and sponge 13 therein can thus be varied and fixed relative to the cutting edge of the razor blade 3 as may be required.

As shown in the drawings the hereinbeforementioned spring sleeve or clip 15 comprises a rectangular shaped portion 15" which fits in a correspondingly shaped recess in the aforesaid member or cross-bar 14 and is secured thereto in any appropriate manner, for instance as shown by riveting; 18, Fig. 6 and 7, indicates one of a predetermined number of rivets whereby the clip 15 is fixed to the cross-bar 14. The sponge holder 12, made in the form of a shallow box, which may be a metal stamping, may be secured to the upper ends of the arms 11, 11 by soldering, brazing or in any other appropriate manner. As shown the ends of the box or sponge holdor 12 are pressed inwardly to form therein exterior channels or grooves 19 (see Fig. 3), in which the upper ends of the arms 11, 11 lie, and internal projections or ribs 20 are received. Also as shown the ends of the box 12 con'iprise inturned portions or lugs 21 which serve to retain the hereinbefore-mentioned movable plate or cover 22, which forms the closure for the top or outer side of the box 12. The aforesaid internal ribs 20, provided by the depressions or grooves 19, formed in the ends of the sponge holder or box 12, serve to retain and guide the movable plate 22 in the ends of which notches or recesses are cut to accommodate the said ribs 20 which prevent the plate 22 falling or being moved laterally out of the sponge holder or box 12. As hereinbefore-mentioned the plate 22 can be pressed inwardly in the box 12 so as to squeeze the sponge.

In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 one side, the right-hand side in Fig. 2, of the sponge holder or box 12 is closed by an upstanding or side portion of the metal of which the box is formed.

The device or attachment according to this invention as illustrated in Figs. 4, 5 and 7 is substantially identical with that above described with reference to Figs. 1 to 3 and 6, and differs only in details or construction. For instance as shown in Fig. 7 the member or cross-bar 14 to which the spring collar or clip 15 is secured comprises side arms or projections 1 between which the clip 15 is located and the hereinbefore-mentioned slots 16 in which the ends of the arms 11, 11 of the device are inserted are formed in these projecting portions 14". Also as shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 7 (which show the device or attachment as designed for application to a safety razor of the well-known Gillette type) the sponge holder or box 12 is appropriately narrower than the corresponding box 12 in Figs. 1 and 2, and the said box 12 in Figs. 4 and 5 is open at both its sides so that the sponge 13 projects to a predetermined extent from both sides of the box 12. The modifications above described and shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 7 are desirable in the case of the Gillette type of razor in which the blade has two cutting edges always available for use alternately as may be desired, and it is therefore desirable to have the device or attachment such that the sponge holder and sponge can be adjusted relative to either cutting edge of the blade according to which edge is being used in shavmg.

The movable plate 22 forming the top or closure of the sponge holder or box 12 in Figs. 1 and 5 is preferably provided with a number of small more or less sharp-pointed tongues or prongs 23 'which may be punched out of the plate, and the bottom of the box 12 may be provided with similar small tongues 23 (Fig; 4:), these small tongues serving to enter or engage in the piece of sponge inserted in the box 12 and prevent, it falling or moving laterally out of the box. The dotted lines X and Yin Fig. 5 indicate positions to which the arms 11, 11 carrying the sponge holder or box 12 may be adjusted according to which cutting edge of the razor blade is being used, the desired position of the arms 11, 11* and sponge holder 12 being fixed by the setscrew 1'? as herei'nbetore mentioned.

As above described the arms 11, 11 carrying the sponge holder or box 12 when in the operative position shown by full lines in Figs. 1 and 2, 1 and 5, extend across the ends of the blade holder of the razor with appropriate clearance to permit of the angular adjustment of said arms about the pivots 16 and 17, the device thus forming a stirrup-like structure which when in the operative position forms a frame within which the blade and blade holder of the razor is located.

The dotted line position of the arms 11, 11 and sponge holder or box 12 in Fig. 2 shows the position to which the device can be turned down clear of the blade holder and blade of the razor so as to permit of the cleaning, stropping or removal of the blade. TllQ dotted line position indicated at Z in Fig. 5 shows the corresponding position to which the device can be turned down clear of the blade and blade holder of the razor.

As shown in Figs. 5 and 7 of the drawings the slots 16 in the cross-bar 1 1 are of greater depth from front to back than the width of the arms 11, 11 so that when the said arms are turned in one direction, to the left in Fig. 5, the metal at the inner ends of the slots forms a stop for limiting the movements of the said arms. hen turned in the opposite direction, to the right, the arms and sponge holder can be turned down to the position indicated by the dotted line Z.

The various parts of the device or attachment according to this invention may consist of metal pressings or stampings, and the details of construction and arrangement of the various parts otthe device nay be modified without departing from the iITVBIXi'iiQH-L Although a sponge or sponge-like sub stance has been referred to hereiirbefore, it will beobviou s thatany otl ierappropriate substance, such for instance as an antiseptic substance, or a piece of soap, might be. carried the means hereinbefore referred to as for holding a sponge-like substance or sponge. For inst-ance the said holding means might be adaptedto carry a piece of shaving soap so that in the action 0-1 shaving the soap: would wipe and be applied: to the face ready for the second or next shaving operation, the

soap worked up into a lather by the shaving brush as usual beiore the second orfinal shaving operation is performed.

What I claim is 1. A device for attachment to a safety razor the said device comprising,in combination, a holder for a sponge, members or'arms carrying the said holder andpivotally connected with means adapted to embrace and tightly grip the handle of the razor, and means wherebythe said arms can beadj'usted to and fixed in a position with the sponge holder and sponge in a predetermined operative position relative to the cutting edge of the razor blade, the construction and arrangement being such that the said members or arms can beturned to. and held in a position more or lessparallel with the handle oftherazor, tothereby place the sponge holder and sponge in an operative position, or turned to a position in which'the sponge holder and sponge will be-out of operative position and clear of the razor-blade and its holder.

.2. A device for attachment to a safety razor the said device comprising, in combination, a sponge holderxconsisting of a box-like structure open at-its side parallel withthe cutting edge of the razor blade, a plate movable inwardly and outwardlyin the said box and guided in its movements therein, members or arms carrying the said holder andpivotally connected with means adapted to embrace and tightly grip the handle ofithe razor, and means whereby the said arms can be adjusted to and fixed in a position with the sponge holderand spongein apredetermined operative position relative to the cutting edge of the razor blade, the construction and arrangements being such that the said members or arms can be turned to and held in a position more or less parallel with the handle of the razor, to thereby place the sponge holder and sponge in an operative position, or turned to a position in which the sponge holder and sponge will be out of operative position and clear of the razor blade and its holder.

3. The combination, with a safety razor, of a device comprising a sponge holder, means whereby the operative position of the said holder and sponge carried thereby can soapplied to the face being of course be adjusted and varied relative to the razor blade and its cutting edge, means whereby the said sponge holder can be fixed to hold it in the required operative position, and means whereby the said holder can be turned out of operative position and clear of the razor blade so that the blade can be cleaned, stropped or removed from the razor.

4. An attachment for a safety razor, comprising a fastening device for engaging with the razor handle, cranked arms pivoted to the fastening device and projecting above the razor blade at the ends thereof, and a holder for a shaving accessory secured between the free end portions of the arms above the razor blade.

5. An attachment for a safety razor, comprising a fastening clip for encircling the razor handle, a crossbarsecured to the said clip and provided with slots, cranked arms pivoted in the said slots and provided with a clamping device, and a holder for a shaving accessory secured to the free end portions of the said arms.

6. An attachment for a safety razor as set forth in claim 5, the said crossbar having projections which straddle the razor handle, and the said arms being pivoted in a plane passing through the.axis of the razor handle.

7. An attachment for a safety razor, comprising a fastening device for attachment to the razor handle, cranked arms projecting from the said fastening device and extending beyond the razor blade, and a holder for moistening material secured between the free end portions of the said arms above the razor blade.

8. An attachment for a safety razor as set forth in claim 7, the said holder being provided with a slidable squeezing plate which bears on the moistening material.

9. An attachment for a safety razor set forth in claim 7, the said holder being provided with guides at its ends and having also inwardly projecting lugs at the tops of its ends, and the said holder being provided with a squeezing plate at its top for bearing on the moistening material, and which projects under the said lugs and is slidable on the said guides.
